Mary Wiedeman, The Class of 1983 first met Dr. Mary Wiedeman during the micro-circulatory lectures in Physiology, but it was my good fortune to work closely with her as a research assistant during the summer following our freshman year. During that preciously brief time I came to know her as professor, world famous researcher, mentor, and most importantly, friend. Shespokeat great length about engendering a professional attitude in the student, a duty she considered sacred. Dr. Wiedeman certainly exemplified the term professional-her sense of dedication and service that permeated her career. Stricken by an incurable respiratory disease. Dr Wiedeman refused to give up. It would have been easy for her to return to her beloved Kentucky the last months of her life, but that was not the Wiedeman way. There was research to supervise, articles to write, and microcirculatory lectures to prepare. Dr. Wiedeman certainly possessed the will to live. One gains a flavor of her dedication and courage by the following example. In the last months of her life, the progression of her disease necessitated the use of high dose steroids and oxygen twenty—four hours per day. Dr. Wiedeman continued compiling data, publishing articles, and gave microcirculatory lectures to the freshman while receiving oxygen by nasal Ph.D cannula. Dr. Wiedeman's obituary in the Philadelphia Inquirer stated she had no survivors. This could not be further from the truth. Surviving Dr Wiedeman are her family in Kentucky, her numerous research articles, textbooks, and her fantastic microcircu— latory movies. Also surviving is the knowledge she placed in our minds and the love she placed in our hearts — a unique contribution to the Class of 1983 and to the entire Temple community. 23 Joseph McKeown.
