This yearbook is dedicated in loving memory of our colleague andfriend, Dung Phuong Vo, whose life was taken suddenly and tragically in an automobile accident on May 1st, 1994. A mere three weeks from graduation, amidst the frenzie of List minute preparations, we are painfidly reminded of the true gift of life. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends as we fondly remember Dung and how she touched our lives. Rest in peace. It's amazing that four years are over and we'll be doing this for real very shortly. All and all, dental school wasn't that bad; for instance, I've learned who I don't want working on my teeth. I am, however, very grateful to be a part of the Class of 1994 because I don't think I've ever been around a group of people who spent all their time together and never really wanted to kill each other. I will admit, though, I have met some very good dentists, but more than that, I've met some great people. Good luck to everyone and their futures. 17 Co placidly amid the noise and haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible without surrender be on good terms with all jtersons. Speak your tnith quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even the dull and ignorant, they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons, they are vexation to the Spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always therr will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs; for the world is full of trickery. But let thisnotblind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals; and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially, do not feign affection. Net ther be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment it is perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with imaginings. .Many fears are bom of fatigue and loneliness. Beyond a wholesome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You art a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with Cod, whatever you conceive Him to be. and whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life keefipeacetvith your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cartful. Strive to be happy. -Desiderata, Anonymous Found in Old Saint Paul's Church. I would like to thank all of you for allowing me to help you in the past couple of years. I really enjoyed it. (Maybe I like torture!) I know I'll be ninety and still hear Canahuate, Capparell, Catey in my sleep. Words can't express the overload of feelings and memories I have. Let me just mention, Musikfest, Jake, Open-Margin-Open, dirt bike riding, and all the guys at Summit. Steve, you are the most wonderful friend and husband a girl could wish for. I could not have finished if not for your support; the late nights, lab projects and your shoulder to cry on. Mom and Dad, thanks for your belief in me, the lab at home, the constant mailing of stuff; we should have taken stock in stamps! I love you. I expect to see all of you at the ADA conventions. Your long suffering and sacrifice have made this dentist's dream a reality. I hereby bequeath my left over sticky wax and green stick compound to the dental school staff to help keep this school together. The following reflects my feelings: I have much trouble getting along with my ideas. There was a daimon in me, and in the end its presence proved decisive. It overpowered me, and if I was at times ruthless it was because I could never stop at anything once attained. I had to hasten on, to catch up with my vision. Since my contemporaries, understandably, could not perceive my vision, they saw only a fool rushing ahead. —Carl Jung, German Philosopher. From this moment I began to conclude in my mind that it was possible for me to be more happy in this forsaken, solitary condition than it was probable I should ever have been in any other particular state in the world; and with this thought I was going to give thanks to God for bringing me to this place. -Daniel DeFoe, from his book, Robinson Caruso. Although our chapter represents only a small fraction of the 19,000 other ASDA members nationwide attending U S. dental schools, we all work toward a common goal— one voice that will govern the future of organized dentistry. Membership in Temple's ASDA chapter is presented to every student as an option to become part of this nationwide voice. We hope to inform our members of issues that will affect them on national, state, and local levels. The TUDS class of '93 believed they were unbeatable in all sports. Little did they know that our grab bag of players would be an unstoppable powerhouse on the diamond. After two years of play, we obtained an unblemished record of 21-0, defeating opponents such as TUDS' class of '93,'95,'96, PCOM, and a pick-up game with the locals. After being tossed from numerous fields, we finally established the YMCA field as our home field. Leading off was Bob the COOL BREEZE Rapine, who received the Cy Young Award for his supreme control on the mound and keeping the bases empty. Next was our rugged catcher Dan McLaughlin, who kept the sticks going on 0 . Gary Walker, our outstretched 1st baseman, followed, leading the hitting barrage with his consistent long balls (which earned him the Batting Title). Batting cleanup, Scott Pettinato kept the runs flowing on offense, while smoothly turning double plays at second base. Following S.P. was the predictable pull hitter, Bruce Butch Hartman. While playing the hot spot of third base on the vacuum left side, Butch shared the Golden Glove Award with short stop, Rudy Roman. On offense Rudy was our placement hitter, keeping the bases occupied. Next, Chris Patterson supplied the speed on the base path and in left field, chasing down fly balls, in center field, Pete Subach supplied endless D , while leading the team in RBI's. Completing the line up was Jerry Popeck (Pockets). Frank Wall was our dedicated, hard working manager. We plan to have a round robin tournament in March April with the three other TUDS classes. We hope these upcoming classes will keep this intramural softball team, that we established, alive in the future. It was very exciting and an excellent break from school. We would like to thank our loyal fans for coming to the games and thank our opponents for those numerous victory kegs. TUSoD's hoop team came away as the Health Science champs of the fall '93 season. With a regular season record of 7-1, the team earned the top seed in the play-offs, and reached the championship game to battle the Haven’s (the team of assurance- made up of the Temple Security Officers). This set up a rematch of the final game of last semester. To recap that thriller, Mark Dellose (’93) hit a half court shot at the buzzer, sending the game into over-time, only to lose the game in the final seconds. This semester’s action was nothing short of that game. Down by 15 points at the half, TUSoD stormed back with the help of Victor G's 4 three-pointers and Gary W's tenacity on the boards. Greg Pedro (league MVP) hit the game winner with four seconds left as the Haven’s final shot rimmed short and the buzzer sounded. Final Score: 53-52, TUSoD victorious. THE EXTRACTORS; Once again the Temple Dental Hockey team has given the dental school something to be proud of. At this season's mid-point, the Extractors had posted a 4-0 record, while out-scoring their opponents by a score of 22 to 6. Led by captains Dave Markowitz, Todd Cox, Brad Klassman and Gary Swalsky; along with star upperclassmen such as Chris Sicher, Steve Garin, Mark Wieczorek, Erik Scheffele and a host of talented freshmen, the Extractors were on a midseason pace to better each of their finishes of the last three years, during which they made it to at least the final four teams of the competitive Temple University Hockey League. If the Extractors, as expected, finish the 1993-94 season undefeated and in first place, a huge ticker-tape parade will be held down Broad Street, led by Grand Marshals Mayor Ed Rendell and Dean Martin Tansy. A thrilling end-of-the-season appearance is also planned for the Extractors on the Good Morning America show. The Extractors wish to thank their fans for all their support and encouragement. We couldn’t have done it without you! 145 TO THE CLASS OF 1994: class of 1994 officers The heights of great men, reached and kept, Were not attained by sudden flight, But they, while their companions slept, Were toiling upward in the night. -Longfellow 146 This exemplifies our struggle through the past four years. The class of 1994 is a very united, fun loving, hard working, and well deserving graduating class. Many long-lasting freindships have been established. We hope to see you in the years to come, wherever and whatever the future holds for each of you. Take pride and comfort that we will have a common frame of time, however small, to reflect on. V J 205 A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN To The Gass of 1994, The Class of 1994 is truly a class that could have gone anywhere, but you chose Temple, and I, for one, am delighted that you did. Temple University School of Dentistry, like all professional schools, is judged by its product, the quality of the young men and women who are graduated from our pre-doctoral program. In the Class of 1994, therefore, the School of Dentistry is indeed fortunate, for the class positively exudes excellence. Part of the historic mission of the School of Dentistry is its continuing commitment to excellence in dental education. You are part of that tradition of excellence, and are not only our newest alumni ae, but our newest ambassadors, spreading the proud tradition of Temple wherever you practice. Some of you will go into private practice, while others will spend a year or so in a postdoctoral program or residency. Be assured that wherever you go, you will be more than equal with your new colleagues. You are dentists! Our graduates repeatedly tell us of their joy in realizing that in the real world they could do the job and do it well. 1 wish each and every one of you the very best in your future endeavors, and hope you will always hold a place for Temple in your heart. Sincerely, Martin F Tansy, Ph D. Dean 206 yj MESSAGE FROM THE EDITORS Dear Friends, It truly has been an unforgettable four years. The memories, some good, some bad, some ugly,...the torture...! guess you could say it was Like Pulling Teeth. But through it all something wonderful has been brought out in each and every one of us. We have bonded in a way not much unlike a group of plane crash survivors might bond, through our common experience here at Temple, and through the profession we, together, have earned. No one can take that away from us. And though now we must move on to our separate lives and futures, we can count on the friendships we have forged, the ties we have made, and the memories we have compiled to last a lifetime. We guess that is why we took on this thankless, over...uh, let’s just say...challenging job of Editors— as a small attempt to highlight the times we have shared. Consider it a brief, yet poignant, collection of this kaleidoscope of moments and memories known as a dental school education. Look through these pages and remember, enjoy, laugh, cry, and cherish. .. We have many to thank. We owe a lot to the dedicated faculty and staff who have facilitated our journey and shed some light on the path. The husbands, wives, girlfriends, boyfriends, and family whose patience and understanding cannot be measured. Let us not forget each other, from whom we have learned, and on whom we have leaned. We could not have climbed this professional ladder alone. Congratulations to everyone. Let’s give ourselves a hand. And best of luck in whatever the future may hold for you. Call us when you make your first million! Always, jjuuJ' i Brent and Yoli We apologize for any misspellings, mislabeling or omissions.
