A Message From the Dean TO THE CLASS OF 1993 Commencement has become a major event in the life cycle of Temple University School of Dentistry. For those of us who stay behind, it marks the end of another academic year; for those of you going out into the world, it marks the beginning of your professional career. With every right, there is an obligation; with every privilege a responsibility. As an entering professional, you are reminded of the obligations implicit in your professional contract: the obligation to provide professional, ethical service to those in need; the obligation to use your professional knowledge and skills to benefit others; and the obligation to use your professional credibility as an opportunity to become involved in your community and in your professional organizations. You have the power and the opportunity to bring about change and improve the lives of many people. Each one of you can make a difference. The Class of 1993 is varied and diverse. Its members span a generation of ages and a broad spectrum of ethnic diversity. Students from North and South America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia and Africa studied alongside students whose heritage is African-, Hispanic- and Asian-American. Because of this diversity, the opportunities to “give back” some of what has been given to you are without limit. The 25 women members of the Class of 1993, in particular, have excelled. Of the 11 new members of Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the Dental Honor Society, eight were senior women. The goal of the School of Dentistry is unchanged after 130 years: to educate young men and women for the practice of general dentistry. We hope we have trained you well, and that your professional life will be personally rewarding. I am glad that you chose Temple and hope you will share our pride in its continuing achievements. Martin F. Tansy, Ph. D. Dean 4
