UNDERCLASSMEN ORGANIZATIONS 170 . v FACULTY STAFF 114 GRAD PROGRAMS u SCHOOL LIFE AFTER HOURS 208 In Memorium Calvin Leifer, D.D.S., Ph.D. 1929-1991 Dr. Leifer came to Temple University as an associate professor of Pathology in 1970, and was promoted to full professor in 1978. Besides teaching dental students, medical students, and graduate students, he was very active in faculty governance University-wide. He had received a research grant from the National Institute of Dental Research in the years 1972-75, and from the American Cancer Society in 1976. He was an active member of the International Association for Dental Research, the American Association for Dental Research, the American Association of Dental Schools, the American Academy of Oral Pathology and the New York Academy of Science. He is survived by his wife, Judith, as well as a son and daughter. 4 5 A Message From the Dean To the Class of 1992 For some reason, “firsts” are valued over and above their true worth. In Philadelphia we are proud of having the “first” zoo, the “first” hospital, which has nothing to do with the quality of either, but merely the fact that they got there first. At Temple, we even brag that we are the “second-oldest dental school in the nation in continuous existence,” as though this makes us something special. Contemplation makes us aware, however, that being first does bring something extra; the tradition and wisdom of age. Thus, the Class of 1992 is the “first” to benefit from the rich past and the assured future of the School of Dentistry. Through no fault of your own, you arrived at the right time, beginning your studies in a building that has educated thousands of the best dentists in the country and the world, and finishing your education from the newest and most modern clinical facility in the country. You are the link between the old and the new, combining the wisdom of age with the excitement and energy of youth. This indeed makes you special, and no other class will ever have quite the same experience. I hope the Class of 1992 will always be special—but any future claims to “first” will result from your own efforts. My wish for the Class of 1992 is that you will always be first in professionalism, in ethics, in service to others and in citizenship—and that you will further use those efforts to keep your alma mater first. Take pride in your school, and work to ensure that future graduates will be as proud as you are today. 6 Martin F. Tansy, Ph.D, Dean The Class of 1992 It is difficult to believe we are finally graduating from dental school. It was four years ago, on a Thursday morning, when we met for the first time in Room A. It isn’t difficult for me to remember that day. We sat there, in our dresses and jackets and ties, wondering what was about to happen and what we had gotten ourselves into. Some of us were petrified. We had no idea the amount of time we would spend studying and working in the lab. Some of us would never make it. After four years, almost 25 percent of our original class will not be joining us for graduation. We will never forget those students. Although the amount of time that has passed since then has seemed like an eternity, what we have accomplished is remarkable. We have gained an education, as difficult as it was, that lets us enter the world as professionals and allows us to provide for ourselves and our families, perhaps, for the first time in our life. We’ve met people that have become our husbands and wives and our boyfriends and girlfriends. We have molded friendships that will last far beyond dental school, friendships that will last a lifetime. It is these friends that helped us make it through dental school and thus, we must never foiget. For these friends are the ones we studied with, laughed with, cried with, celebrated with, and perhaps even slept with. As we leave Temple Dental, and go our separate ways, it is important for everyone to remember where we’ve been and what we have accomplished. No matter how different each of us is, we all had something to contribute to the class, to Temple, and to Dentistry. There is no doubt about it, dental school was hell. We would never do it again. But, putting all the hardships aside, we must step back and congratulate ourselves. In closing, as Senior Class President, it was an honor to serve the Class of 1992. I truly did my best to make things better for everyone. As Editor of the Odontolog, I must say the yearbook was the most difficult project I ever took on, a project that never would have materialized without the help of an incredible staff. I thank and love each and every one of you. May the wind always be at your back, and the road through life be as smooth as glass (ionomer). May you and your families all have a life of health, happiness and prosperity. Matthew D. Freedman Editor-in-Chief, The Odontolog Senior Class President 7 THE NEW CLINICAL FACILITY DEDICATED 8 NOVEMBER 8, 1991 9 A Look Back . . . 1863 The Philadelphia Dental College opened in 1863 and later became Temple University School of Dentistry, what is now the second oldest dental school in the United States. In 1876, the school became the first school to institute a Department of Oral Surgery. 1876 10 The History of Temple Dental 1991 In 1897, the school moved to 18th Buttonwood Streets. The dental college at that location, formally became Temple University School of Dentistry in 1907. In 1943, Temple Dental School moved to 3223 North Broad Street, right next door to the new clinical facility which officially opened to the public in January, 1991. The new clinical facility contains over 80,000 square feet of clinical space, (compared to 36,000 in the old school), and cost over 41 million dollars to construct. 11 Full Time Faculty of the Year Dr. George Monasky Department of Prosthodontics Part Time Faculty of the Year Dr. Gary Woerz Department of Operative 12 Congratulations to both faculty members from The Class of 1992 11. Freedman During ourfouryears of dental school, much has changed. We are not the same people that walked through the doors of Temple Dental in August 1988. 1988 on television. Nelson Mandela, the most well-known political prisoner of his time, was released from a South African jail. Afghanistan was finally free of Soviet occupation. More people than ever before watched the Olympic Games , and fans were stunned when the U.S. Men’s Basketball Team did not win the Gold Medal, and Ben Johnson of Canada has gold medal stripped because of steroids. In 1988, we were looking forward to dental school. Many of us were moving to Philadelphia, and for some, it was the first time living in the big city. We were making new friends, carving teeth from wax blocks, studying for Biochem tests, and trying desperately to stay awake during those dental materials classes. We had our own little world here, and for the most part, we were safe in it. But many things were going on outside of Temple, outside of Philadelphia, and outside of the United States. Oliver North and the Iran Contra Scandal finally blew itself out , but not before it became one of the best dramas The Armenian earthquake killed tens of thousands, and left even more injured and homeless. Wrigley Field got lights, and for the first time ever, the Cubbies played a home game at night. Imelda Marcos was arraigned. Solidarity made some real headway, as shipworkers in Gdansk. Poland went on strike—illegally. The first woman Bishop was installed in the Anglican Church. The U.S. accidentally shot down Iranian fighter jets in the Persian Gulf. History’s worst air-show disaster occurred as 70 people were killed during an exhibition in West Germany. Pan Am Flight 103 exploded and crashed over Lockerbie. Scotland in December. 273 lives were lost in this bombing. The Discovery Space Shuttle made its maiden voyage, putting NASA in the air for the first time since the Challenger Explosion in 1986. The pilot of Aloha Airlines Flight 737 safely landed his plane with all of the passengers in Maui, following the inexplicable shearing of the cabin roof. Natural disasters in 1988 included forest fires that raged uncontrolled for weeks in Yellowstone National Park, destroying 995,000 acres and Hurricane Gilbert ripped up the east coast, leaving a wide path of destruction. On the brighter side, the first Condor ever born in captivity was hatched, and later released (1991): what was once nearly extinct is now a protected, though still endangered, species. 1989 In 1989, we were waxing up dentures, preparing our first restorations in preclinic Operative, dissecting our cadavers, and enjoying our last summer of freedom. In the fall, we began what was probably the worst of our four years. Micro, Physio, and Fixed were just the beginning. 216 The year started with the inauguration of President Bush. Unfortunately 1989 was a year filled with sadness. Rumanian President Nikolai Ceausescue and his wife were executed. Police brutality became a national issue when members of the LAPD were caught on a home video recorder beating Rodney King. The world watched in horror the Tienanman Square massacre in Beijing. Tanks plowed over sidewalks, crumpling anything—and anyone—in their path; one such tank killed four people. This was the age of video, and these scenes were aired live all over the free world; in the U.S., it happened at 6 am. E.D.T. The Exxon Valdez Megatanker ran aground in Alaska spilling millions of barrels of crude oil into the pristine waters and onto the shores of America’s last little the “Iron Curtain was being drawn back. Democracy , in many shapes and colors was taking hold all over the world. .......1990 In 1990, we were learning to give injections by practicing on each other. Pathology, Removable, and Endo became a regular part of our lives. May came sooner than any of us realized and there we were in clinic. It was a completely different ballgame now. We had to deal with tongues, saliva, complaints, missed mandibular blocks, and even prepping the wrong frontier. Signsof hope came in November teeth. We Spent most Of OUT when the Berlin wall came down. Little by three week break that summer preparing for the National boards in July. By the fall we were all novices in the clinic. We spent the fall semester in Pharmacology trying to figure out what language our instructors were speaking and in Oral Path trying to differentiate between Basal cell and Squamous cell carcinoma. 1990 saw much of the “same old thing. Kurds were still persecuted by their fellow comrades—but at least the news releases indicated that poisonous gas was no longer being used. The Pinatubo Volcano in the Phillipines erupted after a 611 year dormancy. The eruption caused earthquakes, torrential rains and floods that took 330 lives and forced the evacuation of Clark U. S. Air Base. Donald and Ivana Trump were finally divorced and Margaret Thatcher resigned as Prime Minister of Great Britain. 1990 ended rather gloomily. Iraq invaded Kuwait, and for the first time in years, the U.S. Military was talking of moving military equipment to the Middle East in response to Saddam Hussein's newest hostilities. 217 AMftifBK AT WAR FROM THE FRENZIED BUILDUP TO THE JOYOUS HOMECOMING 1991 has a sobering start. New Year’s Eve parties weren’t quite the celebrations they were supposed to be. 450,000 Americans were half-way around the world, or on their way. On January 16,1991, the U.S. military opened fire on Iraq and Saddam Hussein. Operation Desert Shield was now Desert Storm. General Colin Powell, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, made it a blunt, brief, bewildering confrontation, and it was over before we knew it. 1991 In 1991 we entered the new state-of-the-art clinical facility. After years of being told we would soon work here, it finally became a reality We spent most of our time in the Clinic and classes were becoming a thing of the past. 218 Ed Rendell won the Mayoral race. On that same election day, Harrison Wofford won a special senatorial election made necessary when U.S. Senator John Heinz was killed when a small helicopter collided with his private airplane over a Lower Merion schoolyard. His campaign was a stunning upset over former Governor and Attorney General Richard Thornburg, as Wofford cried for a national health care plan. Supreme Court Justice nominee Clarence Thomas went before the Senate when Anita Hill brought sexual harassment charges against him, and who can forget the William Kennedy Smith trial. CNN covered the trial live and used a blue dot to conceal the identity of the accusser. 1991 saw the release of some national and internationally known hostages. Mostly American citizens, the men were finally freed. After five years and more, we can say, ‘Welcome home, Terry Waite, Joseph Ciccippio. et. al. It’s good to have you back. One of the biggest shocks of ‘91 came at a quickly called press conference in Los Angeles on November 7. Magic Johnson was retiring from the NBA’s L.A. Lakers. He had tested HIV positive. In December we commemorated the 50th anniversary of Pearl Harbor. Nearly every editorial and commentary said the same thing: Japan really won the war even though the U.S. obliterated them in 1945. Compare both countries then, and both countries now. On December 8, 1991 Kimberly Bergalis died. Ms. Bergalis brought Dentistry to the forefront of the AIDS epidemic when she testified that she contracted AIDS from her dentist. Ms. Bergalis also stirred a national debate when she fought for mandatory testing of all health care workers for the HIV virus. Finally. 1991 witnessed the end of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. President Mikhail Gorbachev resigned on Christmas Day. and Communism in the Soviet Union as we knew it. ceased to be. Boris Yeltsin. President of Russia, is now acting as head of the Commonwealth of Independent States. One of the most telling signs of the uncertainty of Eastern Europe occurred following the liberation of the Baltic States: printers stopped producing up-to-date globes, for they could not keep “up to date with the vast changes in geography. 1992 1992 has brought still more changes. We had just finished up part 2 of the National Boards. Two days of unbelievable tests. We had taken our Mock Boards and were preparing for the real boards in May. Finding patients with the perfect lesions was turning out to be harder than thought. Best of all , Graduation on May 21 was eagerly anticipated by all, as we pushed ourselves to the limit to finish our clinical requirements and prepare ourselves for jobs and residencies. Mike Tyson. Heavyweight boxer was found guilty of raping an 18 year old beauty queen contestant. The former Soviet Union was still grasping for a new identity and grasping for food. Massive layoffs were taking place nationwide as we were struggling through a recession. Breast implants were nearly banned by the FDA and housing interest rates were at an all time low, but no money was to be found. Corporate bank executives, including James Keating, were being convicted for ripping off banks for billions of dollars, giving the FDIC a run for its money. Finally. Star Trek celebrated its 25th anniversary. The last four years ha ve been anything but calm. We have witnessed world events that no one could have predicted. We can only hope that it will all be for the better for ourselves, and for our families. 0 219 Now open even wider. Mr. Stevens.... I have watched many of you grow and prosper as you worked toward that long desired professional degree in dentistry. I know that you and your families and friends are very proud of your achievement; and I am happy to have the opportunity to applaud your noteworthy accomplishment. Special credit should be given to your fine student officers, who have worked so hard and so long on your behalf. As an administrator, it has been my pleasure to work with these people who have consistently cared about the quality of life for dental students. This congratulatory letter to you is one of my final acts. At the end of this year, I will retire upon completion of 20 years of service with Temple. In total, I will have completed 40 years of pleasurable service within the dental profession. Students have always been high on my priority list. That's why I established, with Dean Tansy’s approval, the annual Clinical Achievement Award. Also, to benefit future students, I have donated my condominium to the University to establish the H.E.L.P. Fund (a low cost loan fund), upon my demise. The point is that I cared enough to do something positive, and I hope it sets the tone for others who are equally concerned about helping students. To each of you, as you go your separate ways, my best wishes for great success and a prosperous life in the years ahead. Once you are established, I hope that you will show strong financial support for the School of Dentistry in the years ahead. Sincerely, Richard W.
