Wazney Dr. Edward J. Reith, Professor and Chairman of the Department of Anatomic Sciences, died on May 9, 1985. Dr. Reith was known to us as lecturer, laboratory instructor, and author of our textbook, The Atlas of Descriptive Histology. His commitment to education was great. This was evidenced by the fact that even in illness he returned to share his wealth of knowledge with his students. His efforts were appreciated and his contributions are missed. Dr. Edward J. Reith We take this opportunity to say good-bye to an instructor, a colleague, a friend - Dr. Joseph T. Wazney. Dr. Wazney served as Associate Professor and Assistant Chairman of the Department of Removable Prosthodontics and was a member of the American Dental Association, the American College of Prosthodontists, Omi-cron Kappa Upsilon and Psi Omega Fraternity. The Waz was certainly one of the most popular faculty members here at Temple. He was always happy to lend a hand or an ear to a student in need. We are pleased to learn that Dr. Wazney will be remembered and honored with an annual award dinner sponsored by the Department of Removable Prosthodontics where an award will be given to the outstanding Junior student in clinical performance in Removable Prosthodontics. You are entering dentistry at a time when significant changes are taking place, and some are questioning the outlook for the future of the profession. In contrast, many like myself are optimistic about the future and believe the prospects for a successful and personally rewarding career are excellent. I believe that the faculty and administration have more confidence in you than you may have in yourselves at this time. We know the quality of the education you have received, and we are confident that you have the knowledge and skills which are necessary for the successful practice of dentistry, or for postgraduate education, or whatever other field of endeavor, in the profession which you may choose. There are two items of paramount importance to your future success. First, you must make service to your patients the highest priority. Second, you must be continuous students in order to keep up-to-date with the rapid changes occurring in the profession. Pin-reinforced ZOE restorations Extensively damaged teeth may need temporary restoration so that pulp vitality can be determined and enhanced. The retention of zinc oxide-eugenol (ZOE) temporary restorations can be improved by the addition of self-threading pins. And. by coaling these pins with commercially prepared calcium hydroxide, the reinforced restoration can be easily removed. To so reinforce a temporary restoration, first remove all caries and unsupported enamel from the tooth and complete the preparation. Then, place self-threading pins (coated with calcium hydroxide). Next, place the matrix and sedative zinc oxidc-eugenol restoration. At a later appointment, the temporary restoration can be removed The calcium hydroxide breaks cleanly from the pins and leaves them ready for use in a permanent buildup or restoration. |Portcr. Jan. 4 (AP) — Temple University has decided to keep its dental school but will reduce class size beginning in the fall and establish a dental practice run by faculty members to raise revenue, officials said A university report issued in October suggested that Temple consider phasing out the 100-year-old facility because of a nationwide decrease in dental-school applications and a projected decrease in demand for dentists. But a commission appointed by the university president. Peter Liacouras, rejected the idea and instead recommended forming a faculty practice and reducing class size, now 140. by as much as half.
