A WILD AND CRAZY YfcAK T’was the day that school started, our first day at TUDS. And the frat rats availed us. of parties and suds. Instruments were stacked by the lab seats with care. Waiting for students who soon would appear. We freshmen were gathered around in the lab. While Rick from Codesco explained what we had. Curettes, probes, explorers, that all looked the same, Were then sorted out, into drawers by their name. Into my locker went the rest of my gear. Which I wouldn’t see until my senior year. Each one of their forms. I filled out in a flash, I marked in the blanks, then went out to get smashedl And with my head wandering, hungover from beer, The second day started at dental school here. With the schedules all up, in our classes we wait, And we knew in a moment, we would meet the Saint. More rapid than caries, his lectures they came. And he laughed and shouted, as he called out each name. Here’s axial and lingual, then facial and buccal. Now distal and cervical. Hoi Gingival, pulpal! His bald head would sparkle, his dimples aglow. And his cheeks how they shone, each class was a show. Many days would pass by that we’d hear from Rosett. As he passed around handouts to match his cassettes. He promised us that it was all in the tapes. But the tests seemed as though they were made up by apesl And then would come Furst with those extra thick glasses. It's no wonder that no one came to his classes. A strange question we asked of all classmates for him. To learn everyone's name, and settle right in. With McCrea teaching histo and filling my head, I soon came to know, that it’s classes I dread. He’d speak not a word, but typed tests with a smirk. And filled our slide boxes with plenty of work. As each day would end. we’d know where he goes. With a wink and a nod. he'd be off for Joe’s. A whole year we spent with that cheerful old guy. And I laugh when I think back, though I wonder why. The time flew by quickly, in fact, like a missle. As freshman we were sharp like a whistle. Despite how boring, dank, or dreary. The notetaker may not be weary. His eyes may never droop or close. Though sleep his classmates may have chose. The notetaker just has to be. The only one awake to see What's on the board during each class And copy it so we may pass. He writes and writes ferociously. While others nod off drearily. He's confident he will succeed And get the notes that we all need. So wake us not. just let us sleep And ask the prof, please not to speak So loud, for he's disturbing us. You'll get it all. so why the fuss? I raise this toast to his note collection. A lecture's last chance at perfection! You give us chance to read or sleep. While close watch 'oer the notes you keep. The club's unique aspect was the requirement that each member conduct a research project employing his own dentition. Minimun requirements were established at 24 banded teeth. This growth was due mainly to the efforts of Mark Maraner and Dave Miller who got the fledgling league off the ground in the spring of 1978. In two seasons. Temple's dental footballers lost only one game to the Medical School of the Universtiy of Pennsylvania (the championship game of the initial season) and ended a flawless fall season with an 8-1 trouncing of the Medical College of Pennsylvania. The late night fun played mostly after midnight and into the early hours of the morning was coached by our own Endo connection. Rufus Minor. The quality of play was diverse, including fast breakaways (McKeever). spectacular one-on-one puck handling (Shoenberger). brilliant goaltending (Ehrlich), breathtaking checking (Dillon), and outright gang stickfare (et.al). A good time was had by all and trips to the hospital were few (Cushman), especially for a contact sport in which most players made frequent contact with the ice (Schneck). I have known Mr. Terry for approximately three years, my first contact being in the preclinical Fixed Partial Prosthodontics laboratory during his sophomore year. At that time. Mr. Terry displayed a lack of ability that I have seldom seen in a student. Projects that we. as faculty, would be of an acceptable level of performance were never achieved by Mr. Terry. Mr. Terry has tried to pass off a simple three unit bridge as being a major reconstruction. His is currently re-making the bridge for the fourth time. When told the bridge was in hyperocclusion. his comment was that it would settle. Mr. Terry has no mind and asks the most ridiculous questions that I have ever faced from a student. Needless to say. it is the most frustrating experience that I have ever had in my four years of teaching. Mr. Terry has no rapport with his fellow students and patients. He is known as the biggest throat in the class and the worst back-stabber. Students avoid him at all possible costs. Aside from this, he has a personal hygiene problem, he smells bad. This may also be one of the reasons people avoid him. I have known him to only treat his patients as a means to an end. i.e. whenever he gets some requirements done on a patient and that patient is no longer necessary to him. he drops that patient. I have heard it told that he told a patient that she would get cancer if she did not come back and have an amalgam restoration polished. I consider Mr. Terry to be totally unfit for the practice of Dentistry, let alone the speciality of Periodontics. If I may be of any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me. Although these lyrics are representative of the rock culture of the Sixties. the words and phrases of the song Truckin’'’ by the Grateful Dead greatly helped us organize our thoughts and eventually this book. By no means is the chronological scheme of this yearbook accidental. It is meant to be a story, a journey, an epic that conveys a special meaning to each person of the Class of 1979. As you pass from page to page, year to year, you may find many opportunities to reminisce, recall, forget, laugh, or curse the events of these last four years as our staff frequently did during the assembly of the yearbook. So that every member of our class could enjoy the 79 Odontolog. our aim was to accurately and honestly record the events, feelings, and reactions of the people, although we did occasionally escape objectivity. Nevertheless, it was a united effort to attain our goal of producing a mememto worth your while in years to come. We were fortunate that the fine people in administration, particularly Mr. Sullivan.
