DEDICATION We are now on the threshold of our new careers. It has taken us eight long years. We are happy. But. let us not now forget that during the last eight years of our education. over forty-thousand of our peers have died in war. Our friends perished in a war in which we were exempted from participating. It is ironic that while we were learning to aid in maintaining health, so much death, destruction and injury was occuring. The turbulance and strire caused by this situation remains only to be witnessed by us in the years ahead. We must remember this present situation in the future. If we remember this, and temper these memories with reason, we may have a new future before us. By chance, you have been involved and assisted in identifying issues of the school, the University, our community. In my judgment you have made meaningful contributions to the many changes — some subtle, some overt — that have occurred and accrued during your student days, none of which were rhetorical. It is my hope you will continue your interest in issues, identify yourself with them, become involved, question the relevance of the discussion. I further hope you will accomplish this, in part at least, by continuing your interest in your school and by taking an active part in your local dental society. My very best to each of you. 4 JOHN L. CLASS ADVISOR TO THE CLASS OF 1971 Congratulations to all of you on your collective and individual performances during your four years of study at Temple University School of Dentistry. Your class has effectively demonstrated to the Faculty a degree of maturity and willingness to accept responsibility that, in my opinion, is above the average of comparable groups. Probably no other class in the history of the School has had to contend with as much change in the curriculum as the Class of 1971 has encountered. It is to your everlasting credit that you accepted the changes with equanimity and have, in many instances, made suggestions which led to additional changes. In so doing, you have demonstrated many of the traits a member of the dental profession must possess in order to assure continuing progress and success. All of you have reason to be proud of the record you leave behind you. The potential for leadership which your class has displayed is limitless and bodes well for the future of the profession. The likelihood of dynamic change in dentistry has never been more favorable or inevitable: and so. the fact that you have already demonstrated your capacity to cope with the unexpected should alleviate any apprehension of what the future may hold for you. You can then fly via Star-Jet to D. E. Junction, but because of their unreliable schedule, a more scenic route on the Ala-Tragus Line is recommended. During your ride you'll see the Axial Wall paralleling the Western coast: note the primitive architecture as exemplified in its sharp line and point angle construction. From D. E. Junction you must find your guide Fess Toon who will guide you East across the Mandibular Canal (a painful trip) which must be crossed on a water buffalo. Be sure to have your buffalo knife handy should trouble arise. Looking south as you cross the canal you will notice the massive structure. Rubber Dam. The Dam was erected to create that beautiful Pool of Saliva — a rustic spot where wild hens abound. Having negotiated the Mandibular Canal, the pumice laden planes of Frankfort lie ahead. An adequate supply of alcohol should be carried when crossing these parched, dusty grounds. For those seeking adventure the Cross Cut Fissure can be traversed or even climbed with dowel pitons and epicords. For those less adventurous Transverse Ridge can only mean terror and fright, for the mountains echo with tales of a bald headed midget, mountain hermit and his manikin arm. The journey is nearing its end. but the toll free Cantilever Bridge has yet to be crossed. You can see the beautiful view of the Root Canal with the industrious canal workers reaming their way to the apex near Gingival Seat. The Psi Omega smoker, chicken roast, and rush mixer were the highlights of the rush season, and when the smoke cleared we found ourselves with thirty freshmen brothers. These events were not only enjoyed by the freshmen and brothers, but also by many of the faculty brothers. Football season was soon upon us and the large trophy was to be set on the mantle of the winning team. Psi Omega fielded two teams this year. The battle lasted into the end of November with one of the teams taking first place and the other taking second. The trophy looks very impressive as it sits on the mantle of Psi Omega and it will remain there permanently retired, for this was the third consecutive year that Psi Omega has won it. Next to it stand the two trophies earned during the 1968 and 1969 inter-university basketball championships. Psi Omega has been defeated only twice in the last four years. The freshmen have added much to this year's team and we are hopeful of winning this year's championship. Socially, the first semester was very successful highlighted by the black light party, halloween party, open mixer, and Christmas party. The second semester will be as successful with the awards and induction banquet being held in February, the spring formal in late March, along with various open and closed mixers including a wine and cheese party. This year, as well as in the past, the brothers have excelled academically. More of the Psi Omega brothers have been selected to Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Honor Society in the last four years than any other dental fraternity. The second oldest dental fraternity established its Gamma Chapter at the Philadelphia Dental College five years later in 1894. The ZIP fraternity is a brotherhood of men chosen from those who have decided upon a career in the profession of Dentistry. It is a fraternity which is concerned with the scholastic and social development of the individual and sets as a goal the simple understanding which honors those principles — knowledge, morality, friendship. The Gamma Chapter has experienced a successful year both socially and scholastically. Another successful freshman rush, under the leadership of the Senior Class, was accomplished. Our rushing program consisted of an Introduction to Dentistry , the first open mixed drinks party on campus, and a wild time at the Red Garter in downtown Philadelphia. The Constitution and Bylaws were patterned after the National Dental Honor Society. Omicron Kappa Upsilon. The annual meeting of Supreme Chapter. Sigma Phi Alpha, is held during the time of the meeting of the American Association of Dental Schools. Temple University School of Dental Hygiene selected Kappa Chapter as the name for our Chapter, so that it would be similar to the Temple University School of Dentistry Chapter. Kappa Kappa Chapter. The official insignia of this Society is derived from three Greek words — Sophia, meaning wisdom; Philanthropia. humane feeling and action; and Arete, virtue. These three words are identified with scholarship, service and character. Membership in Kappa Chapter is limited to 10% of the graduating class and are selected from a list composed of the upper 20% of the class. Election is held any time after the beginning of the second semester of the second year. An annual meeting of Kappa Chapter is held in the Spring. Just ask a happy hygienist at Temple and you'll find out: As we returned a week early so we could have plenty of time for finals, we discovered we stayed a week later. Then there was the hassle over short uniforms. You will have one week to lengthen those uniforms to below the knee.' Girls, try to schedule as many adults as possible, but remember Get Set comes first Then there was the Capping Ceremony — one of the more solemn events of the year? Personal Health should be renamed Sex on Campus or How to teach a class of sixty girls what they already know about sex . Girls. I'm very upset, this is the first time in twelve years that any class has tried to change their schedule! Expanded duties taught us much about dentistry — but to destroy our own mouths! We learned how to remove rubber dam from between the teeth and mix up cement to replace restorations (accidently) displaced! The class treasury was then depleted by $12.00 to pay for six pairs of scissors that were so conveniently displaced. The auditorium was renovated with new. comfortable seats. But where did we sit during exams? I called this meeting today to hand out board applications. Now how many girls would like applications? Well. I'm sorry they haven't arrived yet. How many are taking Pennsylvania boards? Oh! How many are not taking Pennsylvania boards? Oh!... Miss Alden would like to know, who the cute instructor is with the big. brown eyes! And every Tuesday Dr. Jordan announced that 95% of the class flunked the exam, there will be a re-exam next week ... and another and another ... The class was prompt to Office Practice, only trouble is the teacher never showed. This was the year that Jones Hall became Jones Hotel! Twice the firemen were called to Jones . . to put out burning pork chops and hamburgers. Girls, every night you blow a fuse. Saturday morning, it's hard to tell what you’re going to meet in the halls of the ninth floor. The Class of 71 was the first to organize a sorority Sigma Epsilon XiM How could they forget the works of such devious minds! We’re very lucky that the hospital is right next door. What would the ninth floor do without several doctors on the fifth floor. Joseph's may go out of business without our patronage, in fact AA should start a chapter at Jones. Dental Hygiene is that branch of dental care which deals with all integrated preventive services administered to a patient by a Dental Hygienist. But to us. the Class of 1972. it is much more. Dental Hygiene is: being told you are a professional woman. being rated on a scale from 0 to 10 by the Dental students on the first day of school, swallowing your gum in Miss Alden's class. being a commuter and getting up at 4 o’clock A.M. to catch the train at 5 o’clock A M., arriving at school, only to find out that morning classes have been cancelled, sneaking your boyfriend up to your room dressed in your uniform and having him pass as a dental assistant, using a fulcrum point, respecting Miss Henny. being told you have to do an anatomical drawing over because it is .0001 millimeters off. finding out there really is no tooth fairy. having a garden apartment at Jones Hall with a gorgeous view of the State Store through your picture window, feeling that Mrs. Frantz is everybody's grandmother. ... being told you cannot attend unchaperoned fraternity parties. ... having Dr. Santangelo clarify, that is to say. having him restate the previous, in other words, having him reiterate. for example, in a more exact manner, the diversified ways, to be more exact, that I have previously mentioned. ... making up lectures at our convenience. being told that you are right in style with your midi uniform. having Miss Hershey sympathize with you when the pain is all in your head. living out of a can. having a Dental student invite you over to his apartment on the pretext of carving some teeth for you and then having him actually carve some teeth for you. hoping that Miss Alden will find no resemblance between your critical analyses and someone else’s. being the only one left standing in Manikin after three hours. turning up the heat to try to avoid freezing and nearly choking to death on the soot that comes out. becoming hypochromic when Dr. Tansy asks you to get out a half sheet of paper, finding out that your writing hand is still going after a lecture. ... loving Dr. Schacterle. having a stove, a broiler, a refrigerator, a television, and a cocktail lounge in your room, trying to quit smoking for your boyfriend when you're up to three packs a day. observing Steve s little good luck charm in his pocket. a. guessing on Dr. McCrea's Exam b. studying for Dr. McCrea's Exam c. adoring Dr. McCrea d. all of the above constantly dropping your instruments, faking nervousness, so you can get out of Manikin early, to go back and cram for the Dental Anatomy exam, which you should've studied the night before, when you were at Joseph's, having Miss Lesene laugh as she tells you that the apex of the last root on your triple-rooter, (that you've just done over ten times), is calcified, finding out that Odontolog is a yearbook and not a toothless person, repeating to yourself that it'll all be worth it one of these days. 222 Steepin' under the dryer?
