Dean’s Message So you have elected to call yourselves the Forty-Niners! I hope when you made this selection you realized the full import of such a selection and appreciated the train of thought which immediately, by chain reaction, begins to unfold. One hundred years ago the persons whom you have selected as your counter parts set out upon a long and dangerous journey with but one thought in mind gold. Some realized the full extent of their dream while others fell prey to the many hardships they encountered. Thus it is with you as you embark on an eventful journey—that ot professional life. As happened before, some will find the pot of gold while others will be beset with disappointment but in your instance the circumstances will differ from those of one hundred years ago. You, as a class, will not encounter the physical hardships on your path to glory but you will face the many pitfalls of professional life through which only your conscience will guide you. There is gold in your class and my sincere wish is that when the final record is written the assay will show a preponderance of the noble metal with but little dross and may the heat from the crucible of life remove the alloys which can only lower the value of the end product.
