its honored place in the academic world by affiliation with Temple University. Due to early recognition of his sterling qualities his fellow students elected him president of the Freshman Class, only to repeat this honor with the presidency of the Junior Class and further signally honoring him with the presidency of his Senior Class and also of the Gar-retsonian Society, which was at that time composed of the entire student body. He was honored by the Psi Omega Dental Fraternity with a bid to join them, some years later being chosen by them as Grand Master of the Pennsylvania State Alumni. Ix.‘on Ilalpern’s training in the arts and sciences of dentistry was under the aegis of such outstanding educators as Simeon II. Guilford, A.M., D.D.S., Ph.D., who was the Dean as well as Professor of Operative and Prosthetic Dentistry and Orthodontia, and Otto E. Inglis, D.D.S., Professor of Dental Pathology, Therapeutics and Dental Materia Medica, and Carlton N. Russell, D.D.S., M.D., Professor of Oral Surgery, all of whom carried the torch of their learning directly from the founding fathers, McQuillen, Flagg and Garretson. Serving as lecturers at that time were our present Dean, Dr. C. Barton Addie, and Dr. F. St. Elmo Rusca, Professor of Operative Dentistry, who are the only members of our faculty today with a longer record of service to our school than the twenty-eight years of Dr. Halpern. In the fall of 1014 he was appointed Demonstrator of Operative Dentistry, which position he held until 1928, the same year that our late revered and beloved Dr. Addincll Hcwson joined the faculty as Professor of Anatomy and Histology. Romance entered at this time in the figure of Dorothy Adelson, who succumbed to his blandishments on August 27. 1910. Dr. Halpern joined Dr. Addie in the Orthodontia department after successfully completing his course in the Dewey School of Orthodontia in New York. This association was maintained until the spring of 1982. In the fall of that year lie was promoted to the Associate Professorship of Operative Dentistry, and in 1985. his work was further recognized when he was given the post of Chief of the Operative Clinic. Thus in a steady progression his ability has been rewarded until in the fall of 1941 he reached the newest pinnacle of his career as Professor of Clinical Dentistry. To detail all of his other activities and honors could add but little to what the reader may expect. Nonetheless some high spots in his extracurricular activities add color to the esteem in which we hold him. Only five years after his graduation in 1914, his colleagues elected him President of the Alumni Society; ever since then he has been a loyal and ardent, worker; he was twice elected President of the General Alumni Society of Temple University, and the recipient in 1940 of the Alumni Award; he was a member of the Board of Governors of the County Dental Society, an assistant secretary and member of the Executive Council of the Pennsylvania State Dental Society; a first lieutenant in the Army Dental Corps; is now active as faculty adviser of the Temple Dental Review (since its inception in 1981); a member of the Blue Key Honor Society and vice-president and charter member of the Kappa Kappa chapter of the Omicron Kappa Upsilon. Dr. Halpern is now serving on the Dean’s Executive Committee and serves as Coordinator for the Professional Schools of the Air Raid and Sabotage Committee of Temple University.
