Sketch of the Life of S. H. GUILFORD, A.M., D.D.S., Ph.D. Dmo of the Philadelphia Dental College SIMEON Mavdbn GoitEORi) was born in Lebanon, Pa., April 11, 1S41. His father, Simeon Guilford, born in Massachusetts, was a celebrated civil engineer and iron manufacturer, while his grandfather, Simeon Guilford, was an ensign under Washington in the American Revolution. He received his preliminary education at Lebanon Academy and the Lititz Academy. In 1858 he entered the Sophomore class of Franklin and Marshall College, Lancaster, Pa . and graduated with a degree of A B. in 1861. After teaching school for one year, he entered the U. S. volunteer service in 1862 as a private in Co. E, 127th Regiment. Pennsylvania Volunteers. He participated actively in the battles of Frcd-ricksburg, Ya.. December 1862, and Chancellors-villc, May, 1863, after which hi regiment was mustered out. In the summer of 1863 he began the study of dentistry, attending lectures duriug the winters of 1863- 64 and 1864-65 at the Pennsylvania College of Dental Surgery, receiving his degree of D.D.S. in February. 1865. In 1864 he received the degree of A.M incour.se from his Alma Mater, and in 1886 the honorary degree of Ph D. from the same institution. In 1884 he also received the honorary degree of D.D.S. from the Philadelphia Dental College. 4
