Dr. Emanuel Frankel PROFESSOR OF CLINICAL DIAGNOSIS TEMPLE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF CHIROPODY A diagnosis must, obviously, precede any intelligent effort at therapy or estimate of prognosis. The ability to diagnose not only gives direction to therapy, but increases its effectiveness by reason of more exact knowledge of the patient's condition. The requirements of a diagnosis are numerous and exacting; but a single requisite that appears to be fundamental is that of intellectual honesty. Knowledge of course, is necessary; but just as important is the ability to apply this knowledge logically and objectively. Proficiency in diagnosis increases with experience and as one increases his knowledge by continuing his studies after leaving school. The diagnostician must be alert to the possibility that even the soundest axiom upon which his viewpoint is based may be subject to change. However, any change must be most carefully scrutinized as to accuracy and logic before it is accepted. But should a neiv concept meet the most critical criteria, and should it in addition, arise from a respected source, then it must be given an honest evaluation by test. Absolute accuracy in most fields is an unobtainable ideal. This is particularly so in diagnosis; yet the diagnostician never lets down in his effort to achieve the admittedly unattainable goal. Emanuel Frankel, D.S.C., Pod. D.

Dr. Louis Newman PROFESSOR OF PUBLIC HEALTH TEMPLE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF CHIROPODY A truly grent profession assumes high stature through service to the public ami by intelligent application of principles designed for progress. Adherence to an ethical practice code and the propagation of the scientific research triad—contribution; acceptance; rejection—has placed chiropody among the honored healing arts professions. By embracing these philosophies. foot surgery has emerged as a practice specialty of the chiropodist. Fully aware of the responsibility associated with the surgical aspect of chiropody practice, a group of American and Canadian foot surgeons founded the American College of Foot Surgeons in 1942. This organization lists as its objectives the teaching and development of operative techniques and to serve as a protective agent for the public and the profession. Potentiating this rise in surgical knowledge has been the approval and guidance of the medical profession and its constituent hospital accrediting agency. Doctors of Surgical Chiropody associated with civilian and military agencies have contributed to research in foot surgery and allied subjects. Other elements aiding this growth of surgical endeavor include hospital residence programs, preceptorships, post graduate seminars, and increased scholastic teaching facilities. As your teacher, 1 have enjoyed an enviable association. To be honored has filled me with an overflowing emotion of appreciation. H'hatever the endowment in your chosen profession, general chiropody practice, the surgical field, or any other specialty, have the pride, will, and strength to pursue your career through the highest ideals of human conduct. Louis M. Newman, D.S.C.
