V ' n Q 1 ,U education ml When, in the course of yearbook events, it becomes necessary to choose one deserving yearbook dedication, several factors come into view. g Temple City High School has always purposed to present a high level of scholastic and athletic achievement. Mr. Floyd Thaller typifies this scholastic achievement. After gradu- ation from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, Mr. Thaller pioneered west to join the faculty of Temple City High School. Now, sixteen years later. Mr, Thaller still remains active. teaching both chemistry and physics and serving as the sponsor for the California Scholarship Federation branch at Temple City. We also recognize Mr. ThalIer's quest to stand unequalled at Temple City as the wearer of bow ties when others wear long ties. It is therefore with pleasure that we dedicated the Templar 1972 to Mr. Thaller and the zeal that he perpetr tes tovgard the goal of highe scholasticfulfillment. Lf f H fn my W ? . These include making speeches and conducting their own campaigns and elections. This year, two well qualified seniors, Marlyce Myers and Andy Roundtree, were chosen to represent Temple City High School during the summer. Sally Routery and Aurelio Molina were selected as their alternates. Andy spent seven days at the Sacramento Fair Grounds after the close of school in June. Marlyce spent her week of June 27 through July 5 at Squaw Valley. Both Andy and Marlyce became acquainted with work of State officials and also gained a broader understanding of governmental actions. Boys' State Representative Marlyce Myers Andy Roundtree American Field Service lngeborg Steinacker, A.F.S. student at Temple City High School this year comes from Austria. lngeborg lives with Senior Kari McFarland and her family. She likes sports, especially tennis. skiing, sailing, and swimming. She is also interested in the theatre and dancing. When lngeborg returns to Austria, she hopes to change other people's prejudices by telling them of her experiences. Marianna Arce comes to Temple City from La Paz, Bolivia. She lives with Mr. Floy Swartout and family. She says she enjoys school here, although it is very different from school in Bolivia. Marianna likes life at the sea and in the mountains-anything that pertains to nature. Her favorite hobby is stamp collecting. She will return to Bolivia and apply for a scholarship to Germany. Switzerland, or Austria and probably study physics. lngeborg Steinacker Marianna Arce Austria Bolivia 1 x l 'a s l..l ' 'I 4 1 I '44, Q . The feeling continued throughout the summer workouts and football team won back to back CIF AA championships. That team. on through the entire season. On December 17, 1971, all the as was the case a year ago, was Temple City. dedication, hard work, and teamwork finally paid off, and that goal was reached again. TC 28 v Bosco 18 It all started in May of 1971 when the established goal was to win The Forty Four and Zero Club 4 Denms O Tome Andy Roundtree Jerry Cimmarusti Def9n5'Ve Tackle Linebacker Halfback When the Temple City Rams defeated St. John Bosco 28 to 18. many feats were accomplished: a second straight CIF title was earned, a 30 game winning streak established lsecond longest in CIF SS historyl and a fantastic high school career ended for seven seniors. They each played in a maximum of 44 games lnine on each of the Bee and Cee levels and 26 on the Varsity levell and won all 44. They were on 4 league championship and 2 CIF championship teams. Defensively they accounted for 21 shutouts while offensively they totaled over 1400 points. Many honors can and do overshadow the efforts of these seven, but the people who do get those honors can not always say they never lost a high school football game. Bob Zamarripa picks up a first down in the La Canada game. Senior tailback Jerry Cimmarusti avoids a La Canada tackler. The success of a football team can be directly traced to the ability of its line. In Temple City's case, its line, both defensively and offensively, was magnificant. The play of center Jim Talbot, guards Gary Lineback and Fred Hitchman and tackles Frank Mclnnes and John Rodriquez resulted in many good runs like the above three. Had it not have been for efforts on defensive ends Mike Evans and Mark Morimoto and tackles Ron Lakey and Dennis O'Toole, the tackle on the right might have not been made. They work just as hardas everyone else, but receive only a minority of the credit. Without them, Temple City would not have captured their second straight championship title. You've come a long way baby. . and so has the performing arts at T.C.H.S.. especially in the vocal department. It has grown to such proportions that it is slightly amazing. Roger Lockie i Mean Mel as the students like to call himl started in 1955 with a group of 4 girls called the Temple Belles and a girls' choir. He soon found that the boys in TC weren't so bad at singing either. Now with the aid of the Acappella Choir, Men's Choir, Concert Choir and the Brighter Side Singers, Mr. Lockie has no trouble in producing some high quality shows for the TC public. At Christmas these groups combine to present The Sounds Of Christmas, featuring portions of Handels 'Messiah'. In April, the vocal department presented many of the large production numbers for the 'Green and Gold Fleview'. However, the highlight of the year was the Jester Hairston Concert. He thrilled both the audience and choirs as he filled the auditorium with his chairsma. Director, Roger Lockie, plays noted patterns for the altos of the A cappella choir during a rehearsal, --....-,. -. - ....... -..- ,.., .--,.--.., -. -- ..,-,, . ,- ,, , . , , , ', , Slemons, K. Up, and Away were the Brighter Side Singers on August 10, 1971. Travelling to England, Wales, and Holland, the singers embarked on the first leg of their journey of the performing at the airport to fill a five hour wait for the plane. Arriving late in London, the singers attention was well monopolized by the scenery and the most picturesque part of London, Leinster Square. Such famous sights as Big Ben, St. Paul's, and Buckingham Palace were seen the next day. Beginning their three week menu of peas, peas, and peas, the singers adjusted quickly to English cooking. Aided by a king- size bottle of Dramamine, the Brighter Side Singers travelled over 1500 miles on a luxurious tour bus at the hands of Mad Norm , the Mario Andretti of the RTD. With him the singers could always count on a suspenseful ride. The trip to Bristol from London was enhanced by the presence of Reverend Trevor Davis, a native of Bristol. 114-A Among the highlights of the tour was the visit to Amsterdam. From boat to train to bus, the trip across the English Channel, and into Holland was smooth. The return was over rough seas and had many of the singers incapacitated. Each singer and chaperone came home from Europe with memories unique to the people they met and places they went, Each one returned richer in their knowledge of life, and of the world. This year's Brighter Side Singers strove to follow in the tradition of excellence set by former groups. Singing for various community groups, the group maintained a rigorous performance schedule, representing their school and community well. Credit must be given to Director Roger Lockie, whose inspirational leadership provides a tremendous experience through music year after year. This has been a year of different concepts and events: this has been the first year of flexible scheduling, and the year of the facelifting the campus received via redevelopment and relandscaping. It was also the year that our Ram football squad won an unprecendented second consecutive AA Southern Section championship in CIF. The TEMPLAR itself experienced what was somewhat of a change. This progressive step was accomplished by having a male as editor-in-chief, breaking a tradition that dated at least seven, if not more, years. Yet along with all the changes, tradition still existed, and meshed with the changes to provide a basis for many memories. One thing that didn't change was the nervousness that surrounded the deadlines. With this in mind, I wish to express my deepest thanks to every member of my staff for helping me see the yearbook through. I especially thank Gwen, Patti, and Andy for working extra hard on difficult sections, and Roberta, for her patience with advertising problems. Thanks to Kathy, Jody, Dan, and Tom at Glenbrier Studios for their consistent reliability and patience with me. Thanks also to Mr. Wilson, for his helpful words of advice during hard times. With mixed emotions I deliver the responsibilities of editor-in- chief to next year's luck individual. It was a year of trials for me, and yet a year I would go through again, knowing better what to do. May the memories of past years and present progress enrich the departing seniors, and may this year's changes serve as a precedent for many classes to come at Temple City High.
