Barbara Brown Returns Barbara displays a sheepskin rug presented her by Ran- furly District High School. After spending a year in New Zealand with Mr. and Mrs. P. D. Grant and their two daughters, Robyn and Diane, while attending Ranfurly District High School, Barbara reports: Aotearoa the Maoris called it-Land of the Long White Cloud-New Zealand. This was the country to which, through the American Field Service program, I was destined to travel. I spent the year with a lovely family in a small but very stimulating community. The friendships that I gained and the experiences that l had will always remain among my most cherished memories. Last January a year seemed like an eternity. I knew an apprehension I had never known before. But at the same time I had a feeling of expectant anticipation. Now a year has passed, and in that year any anticipations I may have had, have iong been dwarfed by the impressions of the fantastic array of experiences and memories that are in my past. I hope that I learned the value of people. l learned that New Zealanders love, iust as we love. They have their dislikes just as we have our dislikes. They laugh and they cry, just as humanity laughs and cries. I learned the truth of the AFS theme: lWalk together, talk together Oh ye peoples of the earth, Then and only then Shall ye have peace.' Bez And Pat's Year Ticks Past Bezawork Shimelash un 1 Wir' if N ,llljlllll 5 9' eb Bez and Pat Sa 3r Oc g ov Patricia Carvalho Patricia Carvalho and Bezawork Shimelash, known to most around campus as Bez and fat, marked the second time that Temple City High School had the opportunity of having two students brought here by the American Field Service. Living for the first time with junior students, they were able to compare life in the United States with the life they had known in their homelands, finding many different customs and traditions. During their year, they took varied subjects and were involved in extracurricular activities. Bezawork could be found selling apple for Interna- tional Club at the annual Carnellia festival and escorting Pat as she served as honorary homecom- ing princess. When they return to their homes in Ethiopia and Brazil they will take with them the memories of a year in a no longer llstrange land .
