To the class of ... Who first said “False as Dreams?” Not one who saw Into the wild and wondrous world they sway; No thinker who hath read their mystic law; No poet who hath weaved them in his day. The above is an excerpt from Henry Timrod’s poem “dreams.” My messa ge to you, the Class of “1987,” is that if you have a HOPE or DREAM you will foster it to its fullest. Hopefully, through your experiences at Telstar, the seeds have been planted for you to invision such a hope or dream. You must also remember that for a hope or dream to be fulfilled, you must develop a plan to carry it out. When obstacles are placed in your way, you must have the courage and conviction to overcome them. Telstar has supplied the tools whereby this can be accomplished. The rest is up to you. Theodore Davis Principal It is not often that the Superintendent of Schools gets to know a class as well as I do your class. Being the parent of a class member helps. During the four years that I have known you, most of you have matured and are soon to be responsible members of our society. Most of you will get classmates to sign your yearbook and then will pack it away, only bringing it out of storage when you want to “check out” something from the past. As Superintendent, I hope that you will not pack away the experiences you have had here at Telstar Regional High School after you leave in June. The knowledge gained from your total educational training is only practical if it’s used and expanded. Each of you need to take the knowledge you have learned and apply it to whatever you do after graduation. Your success in the future is dependent upon your skills. The old adage “Opportunity only knocks once,” is very true. Being aware that opportunity is knocking is the first element in the use of your knowledge. Deciding whether or not you wish to answer the knock is a second element. Whether you do or do not answer the knock is a third element of your knowledge. I wish you the very best of luck with your future. Sincerely, Dewaine B. Craig Superintendent 4

“There are only three types of people; those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who say what happened?” I choose to share this quote of Ann Landers with you because it says much about your past and future. As you reflect back over your years at Telstar, do you wonder how your friends, teachers, and parents would describe the type of person you were? Some of you know, others aren’t quite sure, while others could not care. Nevertheless, the experience, skills, relationships and personal attitudes you developed over this time period will determine your future opportunities. Life after graduation will be a new chapter. Yet, there still will be a variety of pressures, friendships, confusion, excitement, boredom, challenges and decisions. So, direct your life, don’t let life direct you. Watch, ask and make things happen. I hope you achieve everything you attempt in life. Keep in touch. Best, Mr. Hart Guidance Counselor This is the best time ever to be living. There is more opportunity and more freedom than man has ever had before. As you leave Telstar, do not be afraid to set your goals high. Stretch yourself. Even if you don’t reach that ultimate goal, you will have accomplished more and gone further than your cautious contempories. Great men and women have always reached for the stars and were not detoured from their dreams by the doubts of others. Success is as much an attitude as a paycheck. Success can not be complete if you have not found fulfillment and satisfaction along the way. Now is the time to look within yourself and determine where you want your life to go. Plot your course to meet your goals. The real winners of the 90’s and beyond will be those who have learned happiness in life comes from the journey and how you have taken it. Attitude, not aptitude, is the real key to true success. Carroll Higgins Assistant Principal Athletic Director 5
