Who first said “False as Dreams?” Not one who saw Into the wild and wondrous world they sway; No thinker who hath read their mystic law; No poet who hath weaved them in his day. The above is an excerpt from Henry Timrod’s poem “dreams.” My messa ge to you, the Class of “1987,” is that if you have a HOPE or DREAM you will foster it to its fullest. Hopefully, through your experiences at Telstar, the seeds have been planted for you to invision such a hope or dream. You must also remember that for a hope or dream to be fulfilled, you must develop a plan to carry it out. When obstacles are placed in your way, you must have the courage and conviction to overcome them. Telstar has supplied the tools whereby this can be accomplished. The rest is up to you. Theodore Davis Principal It is not often that the Superintendent of Schools gets to know a class as well as I do your class. Being the parent of a class member helps. During the four years that I have known you, most of you have matured and are soon to be responsible members of our society. Most of you will get classmates to sign your yearbook and then will pack it away, only bringing it out of storage when you want to “check out” something from the past. As Superintendent, I hope that you will not pack away the experiences you have had here at Telstar Regional High School after you leave in June. The knowledge gained from your total educational training is only practical if it’s used and expanded. Each of you need to take the knowledge you have learned and apply it to whatever you do after graduation. Your success in the future is dependent upon your skills. The old adage “Opportunity only knocks once,” is very true. Being aware that opportunity is knocking is the first element in the use of your knowledge. Deciding whether or not you wish to answer the knock is a second element. Whether you do or do not answer the knock is a third element of your knowledge. I wish you the very best of luck with your future. Sincerely, Dewaine B. Craig Superintendent 4 “There are only three types of people; those who make things happen, those who watch things happen, and those who say what happened?” I choose to share this quote of Ann Landers with you because it says much about your past and future. As you reflect back over your years at Telstar, do you wonder how your friends, teachers, and parents would describe the type of person you were? Some of you know, others aren’t quite sure, while others could not care. Nevertheless, the experience, skills, relationships and personal attitudes you developed over this time period will determine your future opportunities. Life after graduation will be a new chapter. Yet, there still will be a variety of pressures, friendships, confusion, excitement, boredom, challenges and decisions. So, direct your life, don’t let life direct you. Watch, ask and make things happen. I hope you achieve everything you attempt in life. Keep in touch. Best, Mr. Hart Guidance Counselor This is the best time ever to be living. There is more opportunity and more freedom than man has ever had before. As you leave Telstar, do not be afraid to set your goals high. Stretch yourself. Even if you don’t reach that ultimate goal, you will have accomplished more and gone further than your cautious contempories. Great men and women have always reached for the stars and were not detoured from their dreams by the doubts of others. Success is as much an attitude as a paycheck. Success can not be complete if you have not found fulfillment and satisfaction along the way. Now is the time to look within yourself and determine where you want your life to go. Plot your course to meet your goals. The real winners of the 90’s and beyond will be those who have learned happiness in life comes from the journey and how you have taken it. Attitude, not aptitude, is the real key to true success. Carroll Higgins Assistant Principal Athletic Director 5 Henrik’s Year W e, Telstar Regional High School’s class of ’87, would like to extend our thanks to you for sharing your senior year with us. In this the eighth season for Telstar soccer, the Rebels made the Western Maine playoffs for the fourth time. The climax of the season came on October 22nd, when the team trav¬ eled two and a half hours to the beautiful coastal town of Newcastle to take on Lincoln Academy in the preliminary round of playoffs. Lincoln proved to be very tough and the 6-1 defeat spelled the end of the soccer season. The season record of 7-8 may not be a true in¬ dication of the type of team we had. The fact that we either tied or broke sixteen school records may say more about the team. The 1986 season is now history, but the memories of the season, the games, the prac¬ tices, and the players will stay in our minds and hearts forever. Sincerely, 68 Coach Remington X-COUNTRY On the whole, the cross country team is building strength. Out of ten runners, six were sophomores. Traci Higgins, a senior, and Jason Misserochi, a sophomore, currently hold Telstar records and proved to be two out¬ standing runners of this year. All were quite competitive. The outlook for next year is look¬ ing up. Coach Applin is looking for all underclassmen who participated to return next year and hopefully encourage more to join. Sincerely, Coach Applin Front Row: Travis Buck. Traci Higgins, Henrick Holmstrom, David Kersey, Linda Learned, Mr. Applin. Second Row: Jamie Noyes, Shane York, Jason Miserocchi, Jimmy Heath, Tony Jordan. Crosi Country The 1986 Field Hockey seniors were: Jeannine Conant, Karen Gould, and Chris Craig. These seniors will be greatly missed next year not only for sportsmanship, attitudes and team spirit. Varsity had 16 members, with 12 earning their varsity letter. Varsity team finished in ninth place among the league teams, just shy by one for a playoff birth. Starting line-up was very strong and with all but three returning next year the outlook looks good. We had a strong bench and JV’s which will be coming up to help next year and some strong freshmen. Also goalie Mindy Robinson will be playing with three years experience as a varsity goalie! Coach Scott wishes to thank the team for their team spirit and their sportsmanship throughout the exciting, challenging and successful season. To everyone who supported us. Thank you. Sincerely, Coach Scott Front Row: Karen Gould, Jeannine Conant. Second Row: Mary Beth Hannon, Angie Jordan, Shannon Tyler, Alison Chap¬ man, Julie Denison, Nancy Miller. January’s snowfall and February’s sunny weather made for beautiful ski conditions this season, although it was an unusual season in that there were no championships won. Regardless of the lack of a championship vic¬ tory, the season, like every other, had its moments of excitement. Who will forget the Christmas camp at Gould, the girls’ trip to Dix- mont, the girls’ near-miss in the XC, the Telstar relays, Denise’s third place medal in the XC, or Rogers antics. And good luck in the future to senior Eileen. Sincerely, Coach Crone 74 75 The ski season was definitely an unusual one. To begin with, January of 1987 dumped more than the usual amount of snow and February followed with some of the best ski weather imaginable. The season was also unusual in its lack of championship victories, but this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the team. The team will remember this season for: the girls’ trip to Camden, the boys’ second place finish in the State GS, Shannan’s sixth in Slalom, Henrik’s contribution to the Alpine team, and the seniors. Special thanks and best wishes of good luck to these seniors, Matt, Den¬ nis, Henrick, David, John, and Chris. Sincerely, Coach Remington Front Row: Kelly Jor¬ dan, Dan Hammer, Henrik Holmstrom, Dennis Gallant, Dan¬ ny Long, Shannan Tyler, Angie Jordan, Becky Witter, David Kersey, Billy Wells, Alison Davis, Alison Chapman. Back Row: Todd Chadbourne, Chris Powell, Matt Laban, Steve Learn¬ ed, George Hayes, Thad Wheeler, Chris Craig, Todd Davis, Jeff Lyons. Rlpine 77 The 1986-87 Boys Varsity Basketball Team compiled a team record of seven wins and eleven losses. The Running Rebels were led by senior cap¬ tain Scott Haines. Scott set new school records in scoring and rebounding. He was elected to the All Tournament Team at the Christmas Tournament in Groveton, New Hampshire. The team will feel the loss of seniors Ken Viger, Jeff Rainey, Chris Torrey, and Chris Chapman, when Telstar enters the Mountain Valley Conference next year. The Telstar Girls’ Basketball team finished the 86-87 season with a 5-13 record led by tri-captains Traci Higgins, Linda Learned, and Jeannine Conant. Traci led the team in scoring with 258 points for a 14.3 points per game — she added 11.0 rebounds to place second on team in that category. Linda Learned led the rebounders with 206 for a 11.4 pga. Junior Mindy Robinson was the second leading scorer with 145 points for an 8.1 avg. She also averaged 9.0 rebounds per contest. Traci set two scoring records this year — first — she set the single season record with 258 points and she eclips¬ ed Chris Davis’s career scoring record (599) with a total of 625. Last season Traci set the single season rebound record with 250 boards. Linda Learned moved in third place on the all time rebound list with Traci in fourth place just five behind her teammates. The 1986 Rebels finished with a superb 10-3 record. However, an early exit from the playoffs should leave this edition hungry to make the playoffs and advance further than the 1986 team. Last season’s five freshman starters include: Gary Williamson, Jim Merrill, Rick Roy, Tom James, and Brant Remington. This strong nucleus plus the pitching and hitting of senior Ken Viger should help enable this year’s team to advance higher up the playoff ladder. Sincerely, Coach Brown Front Row: Derek Vail, Gary William¬ son, Brant Rem¬ ington, James Merrill. Back Row: Lori Milton, Missy Johnson, Vanessa Cooper, Marybeth Hutchin¬ son, Ellen Hastings, Kelly Bartlett, Mindy Robinson. Telstar’s 1986 softball team finished with a 10-3 record and qualified for the playoffs for the 4th straight year. The ’87 team lost through graduation Suzi Roy, Penny York, Tanya Foster and Lynn Seames Cobb, but return a fine nucleus of players. Penny York and Mindy Robinson led the hitters with a .542 and a .510 batting average respectively. The defense was anchored by an infield of Jean- nine Conant at third base, Nancy Miller at short¬ stop, Jayme Tabb at second base and Mindy Robin¬ son at first. The outfield was also strong with speedster Ellen Hastings playing centerfield and Suzi Roy, Lynn Cobb and Glori Bolio sharing the corners. Catching was shared by Penny York and Missy Johnson. Mary R. Hutchinson, Vanessa Cooper, Kelly Bartlett and Andrea Howe provided a strong bench. The ’87 edition needs to fill a couple of vacan¬ cies, but should field a strong tournament team for the 5th straight year. We look for¬ ward to the “best season” yet in 1987. The Runnin’ Rebels will be led by David Kersey and Scott Haines (both placed in the State meet in 1986). Other seniors who will make a significant contribution are Scott Stevens, Dennis Gallant, and Keith Clanton; and let’s not forget our outstanding manager Kevin Powell. The boys will attempt to continue their winn¬ ing ways with the return of some talented underclassmen all of whom scored at least five points in 1986. Fred Kuvaja, Todd Davis, Ryan Mason, Jamie Blake, Thad Wheeler, Jason Misserocchi, Steve Learned, and a host of others will see a great deal of action.
