■ DEDICATION Mike Brooks was a 12 letterman at Telstar having earned a varsity letter all four years in football, skiing, and baseball. Mike was also named captain and MVP at least once in all three sports he partici¬ pated in. He was an outstanding fullback on the football team, the New England High School ski jumping champion, and probably the best two-way catcher the baseball team at Telstar has ever had Mike was a very dedicated person to the entire athletic program at Telstar, but, his unselfishness to his fellow classmates, friends, and coaches will never be forgotten. — Peter Brown MESSAGES FROM THE ADMINISTRATION Superintendent Kenneth Smith Formal education is a major vehicle for transmitting knowledge, skills, and culture to the population. All persons are affected by the successes (or failures) of those who partici¬ pate in educational activities. Education comes in many levels: elemen¬ tary, secondary, and post-secondary. I believe that a necessary pre-requisite to occupational and economic success is post-secondary edu¬ cation. I strongly urge Telstar graduates to per- sue higher education and take advantage of the many opportunities which our state and country have to offer. Principal Dr. Wayne Gersen Your teachers and I have worked hard to make your experiences at Telstar challenging and meaningful. We hope that each of you has gained the skills needed to lead a satisfying and productive life, and wish you the best of luck in the years ahead. The first team goal was to win a game. This happened finally at home with a 2-1 defeat of Lake Region. Things began to turn around for the varsity squad about mid-way through the season with a 4-1 vic¬ tory over Carrabec. Two games later brought an upset of number two ranked Winthrop and some hopes of making the soccer tour¬ naments. The rest of the season saw some closely played games but the big win to put the team into the tournaments never came. Through a vote of the players and coach, Ricky James was cho¬ sen MVP, Rocky Myers — defensive player, Pam Lyngholm — most improved and Rick Angevine — best offensive player. 44 SOCCER TEAM ' S PERFORMANCE WON 3 — LOST 13 — TIED 1 Mt. With a total of 36 players, the team membership was up, once again. 1979 was a build¬ ing year (after the graduation of 8 seniors — 6 of whom were starters), and an excellent one with 2 freshmen playing var¬ sity, 1 sophomore, 7 juniors and 6 seniors. The j.v. squad was made up of 2 juniors, 7 sophomores, 11 freshmen. With all this young talent, we are looking forward to a very successful season next fall. The highlight of the season was a 57-51 vicotry over Valley High School in the season ' s finale. BOYS’ BASKETBALL There was much school spirit, excitement and anxiety about the possibility of making the tourna¬ ments, which we missed by 1.7 points. Co-Captains Tony Butters and Doug Webster did a fine job of providing leadership. Their con¬ tributions led to the fine “team play” of the Rebels. The team exempli¬ fied an excellent team spirit and desire to improve throughout the season. Soph. Dave Whitman and Allen Connors with Fresh. Dennis Bodemer and John Holmes were the starters and played important parts on the team and showed much promise for the future. Joining with them, Troy Berry- ment, Mike Otero, Kevin Myshrall, Mike Parker and Eric Clements made valuable contributions this season. Competing with starters, Lee Richardson, Tim Wheeler, Eddie Greenleaf, Larry Poland and Chris Akers round out the team. With time, practice, and developed confidence, the future will be brighter with these young men. 67 GIRLS’ BASKETBALL 68 Front row: B Martin, M Bean, Co-Captains Second row: Coach B Buckland, P Roy. K. Hakala, C. Davis, C. Fiske, P Davis, B Smith, M. Merrill, L. Olson, T Fleet, S. Billings, L. Duguay, C. Fiske, V Ellsworth The 1979-80 basketball season was a very rewarding one. Winning six and losing twelve was a great improvement from the previous season of 1-17. Leading the team in rebounds was Beryle Martin with an average of 11.9 per game. Also in the scoring category, Beryle averaged 9.5 points per game. Helping Beryle out in the for¬ ward positions were Suzanne Billings, with a 4.1 pt game average, Mindy Merrill with a 1.1 pt game average and Cindy Fiske (freshman) with 5.1 rebounds game and a 2.1 pt game avg. Rounding out the forward positions was Alberta Smith and Tammy Fleet. The guard positions were led by Marlene Bean who averaged a little more than 6 points per game. She was also voted co-captain along with Beryle by her teammates. At the other guard positions were Peggy Roy, a fine shooter, Lynda Duguay, a scrappy and aggres¬ sive junior, Karen Hakala (she loves to shoot — from anywhere) and Sandy Friel coming up from the JV ' s to help in the latter part of the season. With 10 of the 12 Varsity players earn¬ ing their letters this year, it was clearly a team effort that carried them to their 6 wins. Our most exciting accomplishment this year was beating our hometown rivals, Gould Acad¬ emy, twice. Everyone played extremely well at both games. Thanks go to Kelly Dooen, Carrie Fiske, and Vickie Ellsworth for doing excellent jobs as managers. We ' ll miss our four seniors: Peggy Roy, Beryle Martin, Carol Davis and Kelly Dooen. Its objective is to promote mutual under¬ standing between people of the U.S. and the people of other countries through student exchange and education. The realization of this objective is gained when SISE students return home and exercise the knowledge and skills acquired during their exchange visit of approximately ten months and thus strengthen the ties and communication which unite us with other nations of the world. 94 LILIAN MOREN Lilian Mor6n of Ostersund, Sweden arrived in late August to make her home with Myrna, Pam and Lorna Carter. She has completed her nine compulsory years of Swedish education and is a member of the Telstar class of 1980 for which she receives no Swedish credit toward furthering her educat ' on. Upon returning to Sweden, she will attend an upper secondary school for 3 years (which is comparable to a U.S. Junior College or Vocational School). She hopes to have a career in either a travel or language rel¬ ated field. Lilian arrived with an ideal attitude toward getting the most out of her exchange visit. She willingly has dropped many Swedish ways of life or criticism. and accepted the American way without rebellion She thoroughly enjoys people and is eager to participate in each new experience or celebration. She can best be described as laughing, loveable Lilian. Written by Myrna Carter ANSSIANTILLA August 21, 1979 was a day our family, Tim, his grandmother and myself looked forward to with excitement and a little apprehension. We had only known for about three weeks that Anssi would be joining us. There had been no time to exchange letters. We had seen Anssi’s pictures, read his school record and glowing reports by teachers and friends. We had looked Finland up on the map and read about the country in the encyclopedia but there were many questions in our minds. Would he like living in a rural area? We knew he loved skiing, and sports but Helsenki is a city with half a million people. What about having to depend on others for transportation? Finland has one of the world’s best public transportation systems. What would he think of Telstar High? We are very proud of it, but how would it compare with Fin¬ nish schools? These were a few of the questions we asked ourselves and then there was the big one — What will he be like? Pictures and written reports really tell so little. As we watched the SIS kids leave the plane, my stomach was churning. What if one of those tall superior-looking blondes was Anssi? As we stood, holding a large “Welcome Anssi” sign and trying to pick him out of the crowd, a small tired voice said, “Here I am!” What a relief! He looked nice and he sounded nice. Six months have passed since that night. During these months we have learned much about Fin¬ land and I hope Anssi has learned much of our country. He spent February vacation in Florida with his uncle and his father, who was here on business at the time, so he will know about more than Maine. I know Anssi speaks English much more fluently than when he first came but you’d be surprised at how many new words we have learned while helping him. I think there have been times when Anssi has been very bored, but homesickness hasn ' t been any problem. Perhaps, it will be for us when he leaves.
