Probably the most positive statement that I can make about Telstar’s music dept, is in relation to its growth during the past five years. We started the first year with only two performing groups, chorus and band, besides two Junior high and two senior high music courses. We now have six per¬ forming groups; Junior chorus, Senior chorus, Junior band, Senior band, Marching band, and Stage band. We have also started a string group with eight players, along with our Junior and Senior high music courses. The enrollment in the performing groups has grown from sixty students that first year to 225 students, more than one third of the student 32 James Fiske Science Nicolas CU Science 35 HOME ECONOMICS The Home Economics department at Telstar has been very unique for the past 5 years. We have been the only public school in the state that has offered semes¬ ter courses for the sophomore through senior classes. We have been very proud of our course offerings and the fact that we have been able to reach a wide variety of students with differing abilities. Home Economics is no longer the stereotyped idea of just cook¬ ing and sewing. We encompass all phases of family life for both boys and girls, from the basic foods and clothing to family relations, child care, consumer economics, housing and interior decorating, to the boy’s chef course. We performed for the public at a concert in the spring. The String Group offers a valuable opportunity to anybody who has an interest in a variety of music. STAGE BAND Our Stage Band at Telstar has been improving with age. It is now two school years old. We play all three types of stage band music — jazz, swing, and rock. The sound comes from six saxophones, four trumpets, three trombones, piano, guitar, bass (electric) and drum. Under Mr. Bangs excellent direction, we have played at basketball games, dances, and gone to the State-wide Competition, this past spring, where we showed how Telstar students can play; all in all the future holds great thing’s for this group. An ex¬ change concert between Cali as band and Telstar band was conducted in March and April. To top off the year the band presented their annual Spring concert and again marched in the Memorial day parades. SENIOR HIGH CHORUS First Row: K. Morgan, S. Roberts, D. Cole, P. Coolidge. K. The manager Lauri Lit¬ tlefield warms the group up by doing the scale once or twice. We have been successful in singing with alot of good music. We sang at the Christmas and Spring Concert. We have had alot of fun this year! JR. HIGH BAND Jr. High Band at Telstar consists of approximately 40 members and is growing all the time. We have a selection of instruments. In football and cross-country we had an undefeated season. Both Junior Var¬ sity and Varsity Cheering squad re¬ ceived charmes because our teams were MVC Champions. In basketball we had the best season yet, and we’re sure next year will even be better. We are losing three seniors this year; Terry Berryment, Ann Rolfe, and Alice Smith. We would like to thank Mrs. Applin for the many things she has done for us this year. VARSITY CHEERLEADERS 1st Row: A. Smith, P. Savage. A. Rolfe, K. Morey. 2nd Row: T. Berryment. S. Kendall, T. Chadbourne Telstar Senior High Student Council 138 When you have a great team attitude, a great team effort, and a great team spirit; you usually end up with a great team. This is what happened at Telstar this year. The football team had all these assets going for them, and more, to end up winning the M.V.C. title and the Class C Championship. It was truly a team effort — one time our defense would rise to the occasion, an¬ other time our offense would come through when we needed it. But always there was someone that came through. There were many outstanding individual efforts that certainly can be looked back upon with pride. Offensively, we combined a quick-hitting line, featuring Bruce Henley, Glen Olson, Ricky Westleigh, Frank Howard, Randy Olson, Tim Rosenberg, and Alan Seames, with a hard-running backfield composed of Peter Blake, Levi Brown, Doug Brooks, and Paul Farrar. With this combination we sustained a solid, crunching, time consuming ground game that overpowered opponents. Top reserves, who performed excellently during the course of the season were Ricky Wing, Gary Wight, Kevin Trinward, Francis Westleigh and Wayne Cummings. Defensively, the team gave up a total of 33 points, which is very impressive, and did not allow a point scored against them at home. The defense was solid throughout the year with excellent line play from Bruce Henley and Alan Seames at the ends and Randy Olson and Glen Olson at the tackles and Tim Rosenberg at middle guard. The soled linebacking trio of Frank Howard in the middle. Ricky Westleigh and Kevin Trinward on the flanks was outstanding. The fleet secondary consisted of Peter Blake, Paul Farrar, and Wayne Cummings. Top defensive reserves were Levi Brown, Doug Brooks, Francis Westleight, Ben Warner, and Gary Wight. Fine efforts by the J.V.’s proved to be tough competition for the regulars during the week. Yes, it is a season to remember! • t . .% % .. V «■
