J ZODIAC 1971 TELSTAR REGIONAL BETHEL, MAINE IN THE BEGINNING - . ALONG THE WAY WE’VE SEEN THE THRILL OF WINNING - AND THE AGONY OF DEFEAT. MANY TIMES WE’VE GONE OUR DIFFERENT WAYS, LOOKING FOR THE BEST ROAD TO TRAVEL. LEADING US TO BETTER THINGS. AND NOW THE JOURNEY IS OVER AND WE’RE TOGETHER . . . FOR THE LAST TIME! DEDICATION We, the Graduating Class of 1971, wish to appropriately honor Mr. and Mrs. John Applin, by dedicating to them this third edi¬ tion of the Telstar Zodiac. These two teachers have done so much for the students and school here at Telstar, and in return have received the highest admiration and affection of the student body. Never let your ideals change, for the students look up to, and respect you both very highly. 18 Sally Hannon Physical Education I A ACTIVITIES ZODIAC CO-EDITORS: SENIORS PERSONALS CO-EDITORS STAFF: UNDERCLASSMEN CO-EDITORS: STAFF: ACTIVITIES CO-EDITORS: STAFF: MERRIE-LEE BUTTERS LINDA GILBERT JEANNE BAILEY CHRIS GREENLEAF LINDA BUCK DON MARQUIS DEBBIE STEARNS JOHN TRINWARD DAVE KENISTON JODI PACKARD JERI BROOKS CHRISTINE GROVER TERRY INMAN TERRI MILLS KEVIN TRINWARD GAIL DICKEY NANCY TRINWARD SHARON JORDAN GAIL McINNIS SPORTS Co-EDITORS: STAFF: BUSINESS EDITOR: STAFF: PHOTO EDITOR: TYPING: FACULTY ADVISOR: STEVE BLAKE LARRY BROWNE ELAINE CONNER SALLY DEEGAN NANCY BAILEY RON DEEGAN CAROLYN TYLER PAUL BILLINGS MARY ANN CHAPIN SHERRI HUTCHINSON CATHY LITTLEFIELD DONNA ROSENBERG PAUL McINNIS VICTOR BERNIER PATTI GILL MRS. The Junior Class produced a lot of Telstar’s best ath¬ letes this year. We had baseball, basketball, football, cross country, skiing, and track stars among us. Merry Robertson and Cindy Tifft represented us on the cheerleading squads. Cinay Tifft was also selected Recorder of the District for F.H.A. Those participating on the Boys’ and Girls’ Ski Teams this year were Terri Mills , Mary Cummings, Stuart Sweetser, Howie Whitten, Rex Cummings, and Dana Melville. Dues were collected with the understanding that the proceeds would be used to purchase caps and gowns in the next year. Juniors who were elected to the National Honor So¬ ciety are: Susan Davis, Bonita Sessions, Stuart Sweetser, Dean Walker, and Cheryl Wight. The class as a whole added a considerable amount of recognition to Telstar in all fields of student endeavor. SOPHOMORES First Row - Valerie Knights. The class was repre¬ sented very well in sports. We made up a considerable amount of the cross country team. We also had two starters on the basketball team. Although our football participation was weak, we made up for it with our participation at the games. As always our representation on the baseball team was great and many of the outstanding track members were sophomores. We were proud to have Terry Ber- ryment and Sharon Dombkowski represent us on the cheerleading squads. We came from last year’s 5th place in the Winter Carnival to 2nd place this year. (But let it be said that we did have Number 1 running hard!) To show our appreciation for the efforts of the cross country and football teams we held a supper in their behalf. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who helped make the supper a success. In regard to the Student Council, the Sophomores had the most running. The Sophomore class officers are Dana Morgan — President, Devin Andrews — Secretary-Treasurer, and Chris Grover — Vice President. In Physical Education during the Badminton Championships, Belinda Briggs and Toni Conrad were winners. Those participating in the Boys’ and Girls’ Ski Teams were Jeri Brooks, Jennifer Jeffries, Mary Ellen Andrews, Kevin Trinward, Bob Howe, Mike Davis and Roger Buck. During the end of the year we held a raffle for a tape player which Don Morin won. FRESHMEN First Row Raymond JuhL Scott Gilbert. Herb Kennison. Wayne Cummings. Gary Wight. Randy Olsen. Our Class Officers this year were Nancy Scribner — President, Dennis Browne — Vice President, and Wendy Cross — Secretary-Treasurer. Our class was the first class to go on modular passes. A good percentage of the class was against it because we felt when we got up in the Senior High we would be free from Junior High ways. We ordered class rings late in the year and changed the design a little. In place of the open book and the skier we are having Yosemite Sam. Ten students went to the Dave Astor Show. They were Gary Wight, Kelly Olsen, Ricky Yorke, Kathy-Jo Morrill, Kerry Merrill, Terry Inman, Ralph Mills, El¬ len Clark, Harry Morton and Nancy Scribner. Ka¬ thy-Jo Morrill did a pantomine to “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again.” There have been displays of art of Harry Morton put in the Art Window and in the Faculty Center Paul¬ ine Sweetser’s works have been shown. Betty House was in a play called “The Proposal.” Roxanne Thomas, Pauline Sweetser, and Nancy Verrill put up posters for the play. Freshmen on the Girls’ Ski Team were Donna Mor¬ an, Sue Bryant, and Mary Chapin, and on the Boys’ ki Team were Peter Blaxe, Mike Stecher, and Tim Rosenberg. Peter Blake won the Ski Meister Award. We were proud to have two cheerleaders on the squads from our class, Kelly Olson on J.V. and Terry Inman on Varsity. We had three Problem Science winners, Scott Gil¬ bert, Bernice Farnum, and Tom Anderson. We’ve also had people in band, chorus, and other clubs. Itllll I EIGHTH GRADE First Row Larry Bonney. The eighth grade has been a very active class this ear. We nearly doubled our funds by sponsoring four unior High Dances and are now planning a class picnic. Our class is represented in many clubs such as G.A.A., Band, Chorus, F.H.A., Ski Team, Art Associa¬ tion, Intramurals and played a big part in putting on the Gymnastic Clinic. In the Winter Carnival activities we placed fourth (which isn’t too bad), and came in first in the Alpine Skiing event. On behalf of all the class officers, we would like to thank everyone who has helped us in our activities and especially our class advisor, Mr. Roy. Class Officers elected this year were Mark Thurlow — President, Tommy Stecher — Vice President, Candy Bennett — Secretary, and Jeffrey Little — Treasurer. We, the class officers of the seventh grade, haven’t done very much this year, but here are a few of things we have done. We have participated in a dance with the eighth grade. Also with help from some of the other seventh graders we came in fourth place on the snow sculp¬ tures, tying with the eighth grade. Here are some of the places we came in, in the Winter Carnival. In the basketball games we came in third, in the eggroll we came in third with Andy Snyder, in the two-legged skiing race we came in third with Nancy Melville and Tommy Stecher. At present we are selling chances on a portable ra¬ dio. I Coach LaVallee, Phil Mills, Larry Browne, John Trinward.
