A physical educa- tion program explaining the game of spaceball, and a program including a spokesman from NASA, gave students a needed break from the grind of school work. Annual activities, such as the crowning of football and basketball homecoming queens, along with foot- ball and basketball parents recognition night, brought more life to the half time activities. The Council again sponsored the used book program that made getting books for the fall much easier. The officers for the Student Coun- cil were Barbara Nelson, treasurer; Lisa Taylor, secretary; Cathy Connor, presi- dent; and Jeff Lawalin, vice-president. f The 1972-73 journalism staff, ham- pered with just one class of only 19 students continued with the production of the “Marksman” and “Sagittarius” Pictured at left are “Sagittarius” editors Jane Bruggenschmidt, George Reed and Mary Ann Strahl. At the right are “Marksman” edi- tors Randy Arnold, George Reed, Michele Arnold and Dave Bosley. The Journalism Department brought home two first place awards from the University of Evansville Jour- nalism Day. Awards received were for the best editorial written by Louise Cole and the best news story by Den- nis Cole and Cindy Ayer. This was a first for Tell City High. Thanks to the efforts of Louise Cole, the “Helicon” has continued its publication this year. “Helicon” is a medium by which students have an opportunity to display their creativity in writing. Mr. James Ashby and Mr. Henry Wolfe, in their first year at Tell City, kept the band in winning form, a long standing tradition. The band swept the state competi- tion in Salem, Indiana, to capture the Grand Champion trophy. They also placed second in the field and street judging. Many firsts were taken by the musicians at the state solo contest. The band marched at football games, participated in parades, and gave concerts while the pep band per- formed at home basketball games. Far left: Drum Majores Janice Crawford and Kathy Goble. Jayne Luttrell is involved in a pantomine number. Jennifer Kuster made an appearance with “Somewhere, My Love” to kick off the evenings entertainment. Mr. Ashby directs the swing band during their performance. Black lights highlighted thebrillantly painted poster in the background. 27 Language Clubs FRENCH CLUB OFFICERS: Denise Hawkins, Mrs. Horn, Jerry Hagc- Vickie LaGrange and Jerry Hagedorn in a French Qub skit, dorn and Meg Karney. 28 SPANISH CLUB OFFICERS: Gail DuPre, George Reed, Dave Faulkenbcrg, Steve Gudorfand Debbie Evans. The Language Department was ex- panded this year with the addition of German to the curriculum. The newly formed German Club be- came a part of the language club pro- gram which already included the French French and Spanish clubs. A new concept of travel for the clubs brought varied money making projects. Club members sold light bulbs and suckers, raffled a television and checked coats at ball games to earn money for foriegn travel. After hours of work, the members realized their goals. During Easter vaca- tion French students toured Montreal Canada for four days while twenty- two Spanish students visited Mexico City for six days. The German stu- dents made plans for travel at a later date. These travels, the first of their kind at TCHS, helped the students better learn the language and customs of the countries. 30 • % ' OR. NOER 9 r ■ Harvey hops to Success Nights In White Satin The colors gold and white helped to set the mood for the 1973 Junior-Se- nior Prom. The walls, covered with a white background and gold stars, carried out the theme “Nights in White Satin” while flaming torches lit the way into the National Guard Armory. In one corner, pictures could be taken in a large, white summerhouse decorated with pink and red roses, and surrounded by hedges. White crepe paper with more gold stars was strung across the dance floor with rose mobiles hanging from the middle. The romantic atmosphere was enlivened by Family Portrait, a nine piece band from Murray State University. Senior Robin Goffinet was crowned Prom Queen by her escort Charlie Heckel. Her court included Cathy Con- nor and escort Rick Staples, Teri Davis and escort Chris Kleeman, Lavonne Flaherty and escort Tim Miller. Junior attendants were Ronda Hen- son escorted by Kent Smith, Fonda Henson and escort Barry Stiles, and Diane Taylor escorted by Paul Werner. 33 ATHLETICS ROW 1: M. Holman, T. Malone, R. Wolf, J. The Tell City Marksmen finished their season with a 7-3 record and claimed another SIAC Championship. Although the record might not reveal it, the Marksmen had a tremendous season. The schedule was certainly one of, if not the most difficult ever played at Tell City, according to head coach Joe Talley. One good reason for the season being difficult was the addition of Jeffersonville to the schedule. Although the Marksmen were de- feated by Vincennes, Jeffersonville, and Providence, their potent offense was able to score in every game. The backbone of the offense was built around Pat “Iron Man” Malone who scored 22 touchdowns and also wide receiver Dan Talley who caught 37 passes for seven touchdowns. The Marksmen had six players who made all-conference. They were Wayne Marchand, Danny Talley, Tim Cail, Randy Arnold and Dennis McGee. Pat Malone received All-State honors from both the AP and UPI coaches poll. TC They 34 Mt. Matmen Record 6-4 Season Referee Larry Lyons gets ready to signal points for the take down as the wrestlers work their way to the mat. A Marksman grappler finds himself in a tight spot as he is about to be pinned. The referee keeps close watch on the action. 40 Tell City Wrestlers finished the 1972-73 season with a 6-4 record and placed seventh out of 17 in the SI AC match. Two wrestlers, Wayne Marchand and Jerry Hagedorn qualified for the regional. Marchand went on to place second in the regional and Coach Pride had this to say about him. “Wayne had an exceptional year, because with no previous varsity ex- perience he finished 21-2. He had championships in the SIAC and sec- tional plus a first place finish in the Invitational meet. He was our first SIAC champ and I’m proud of him. He is a competitor.” Coach Byrd called this team the “best ever” for the grapple rs. With 33 of the 36 wrestlers re- turning 1974 looks better than ’73 which was supposed to be a rebuilding year. With four years ahead, they looked eagerly yet apprehensively to the ex- citements and educational opportuni- ties which lay ahead for them. Their entrance wasn’t unnoticed! At first they searched for rooms, con- fused teachers, avoided senior hall, and walked in groups of three or more. But within a few weeks they had as- sumed their roles and blended into the high school picture. The class selected Ed Collignon as their president with Chris Hoesli as vice president. Delane Clayton was elected secretary and the frosh chose Susan Yaggi as their treasurer. Mr. Blazey and Mr. Waters were voted class sponsors. For football homecoming the class representative was Sharon Duncan while Kelly Alvey served as basketball attendant.
