1967 SAGITTARIUS TELL CITY HIGH SCHOOL MR. EDWARD J. PETER We respectfully dedicate the 1967 SAGITTARIUS to Mr. Peter, career teacher, friend of boys and girls, who has spent 45 years of his life helping young people along the road to learning. Mr. Peter holds the respect and admiration of all boys and girls who come to school to learn. Those who come to school to play can and do find fault with everyone, and everything. Mr. Peter and his wife, the former Elsie Holman, have 8 children and 25 grandchildren, all of whom live in or near Tell City. We wish Mr. Peter many years of happiness in his retirement-----he has earned them well. 2 HUGH THRASHER, PRIN. Seated, superintendent Grady Swadley. A THUMB-NAIL HISTORY OF TELL CITY SCHOOLS This year's graduating class brings to 3,711 the total number of graduates for Tell City High School. The first class to get diplomas was the 1905 class--with 3 members. Mr. Swadley is the eighth superintendent to serve during the 62 year period. Previous superintendents have been Chris Newman, Charles Hanner, J. S. Turner, Glen Traw, N. Dixon, Fred Fechtman, and Glen Bretz. The entire high school faculty for the first few years was made up of two teachers--the high school principal, and the city superintendent. Until 1909, the Old North Building, standing where Newman Building does now, housed the high school. From 1909 till 1928, the present Franklin building served that purpose. The 12th Street location has served since 1928, with additions in 1951 and 1963. 15 Our Cooks: Mrs. Elizabeth Snyder, Mrs. Marie Niemczyk, Mrs. Ann Scheiber, and Mrs. Christine Masters. 16 THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO KEEP OUR BUILDING CLEAN: Mrs. Bertha McManaway, Mrs. Helen Kress, Charles Davis, Ferd Kleeman, and Maurice Kleeman. Our class entered the halls of TCHS in September, 1962, about as green as any bunch of freshies could be. For contrast, look at us, NOW! We selected Norvin Esarey as our president, Susan Howe as vice president, and Craig Blackford as sec'y-treas. Mr. Day and Mr. Kramer were chosen as advisors. Student council members were Angela Clemens, Paul Bosler, Sheila Reed, Steve Peckinpaugh, Pat Hobbs, and Polly Ziegelgruber. Our biggest job as freshies was to grow up a little bit, and get over a bit of our silliness--which some of us (at least) did. As sophomores, we elected John Austin as president, Craig Blackford as vice-pres., and David Hollander as sec'y-treas. The student council members were Mike Aldridge, Jolene Dauby, Brenda Werner. John Frizzell, Mark Kleeman, Kathy Schierholzer, Frank Oberhausen. and Freddie Hawkins. Our advisors were Mr. Curry and Mr. Utley. The big event of the year was getting our jackets (or sweaters) and ordering our rings. We were back again, in the fall of 1964, as jolly juniors, and elected John Austin as president (again), Craig Blackford as vice-president (again), Dave LaGrange as secretary-treasurer. Mr. Varner and Mr. Aubrey were our advisors. Student Council members were Kathleen Dauby, Barbara Wittmer, Ronnie LaGrange, Mark Kleeman, John Frizzell, Julie Anderson, Janice Hanloh, Mary Purviance, Kenny Simpson, and Sharon Fischer. We received our rings--from Josten's --and boasted an enrollment of 224, which could make us the largest graduating class, ever, if all went well--next year. Officers selected for our senior year were Kenny Simpson as president, Mary Jo Patterson as vice-pres., and Julie Anderson as sec'y-treas. Mr. Kramer and Mr Aubrey were our advisors. Serving on the student council were Mike Aldridge, Mark Kleeman, Kathy Roeling, Terry Vogel, Mickey McMahon, Suzanne Foertsch, and Sue Dougan. Pupils entering our class after September 1962 were Boise Macon, Ronnie Mahoney, Steve Peckinpaugh, Rhonda Smith, Jolene Dauby, David Patmore, Joe Ernst, Liz Lochmueller, Larry Jackson, Evelyn Scott. Ronnie Crawford, Paul Bosler, Arlene Whalen, Phyllis Masterson, Gerald Evrard, Debbie Shepherd, Donna Devillez, Pat Sanders, and Roger Bess. Those leaving our group during the four years were Becky Hauser, Tom Jones, Ron Harding, Martha Beard, Vicky Trent, Dan Harpe, Pat Benner, Patsy Reynolds, Ronnie Howe, Paul Bosler, Harold Weatherholt, Don Appel, Peggy Kleeman, Nina Kreisle, Cathy Northenor, Curt Mosby, Jim Evrard, and Charlene Mogan. The highlight of the senior year will be--we hope--getting our diploma, and a chance to try our own way in the world. We worked hard to earn money for our senior trip to New York and Washington, enjoyed getting and wearing our caps and gowns for graduation, exchanging name cards, having our senior pictures made, and seeing them in the TELL CITY NEWS--but graduation will be the really big event in our high school career. 41 The annual Honor Banquet, as sponsored by the high school PTA and the two banks and two savings and loan associations, is a great event in lives of hard workers. Above, 13 seniors who have been able to attend this banquet each of their four years: Row 1: Diane Hess, Ella Rose Gelarden, Theresa Naviaux, Sharon Dauby, Julie Anderson. Row'2: Esther Kleaving, Donna Sandage, Connie Lautner, Gaylia Silke, Barbara Wittmer. Row 3: Alan Keller, Dave Hollander, Jim Seibert. 24 members of the senior class made the Honor Banquet. Above are shown 13: below, the other 11. Left to right, row 1: Pat Sanders, Kathy Frieler, Dot Lehmkuhler, Paula Oskins. Row 2: Carol Katterhenry, Sue Borders, Susan Howe, Leslie Lilly. Row 3: Kristine Kreisle, Boise Macon, Lois Winter. 42 44 45 CO OFFICIAL PORTRAIT, CLASS OF '67 Have you ever seen so many handsome and intelligent people in one place? How many can you name?
