How you cheered us up, and then we realized you've gone away. We sat there and remembered, We sat there and cried, We held each other tight, We didn't know how to say good-bye. We love you and we'll miss you, And in our hearts you'll always stay. And no matter how much time will pass, these memories will never go away. 2 ad fad n: practice followed foe a time with exaggerated zea I C AZC Fads show up everywhere you look, and at THS you didn't have to look very long. When the weather was warm enough, people were wearing LECgoons or something similar, which are brightly colored, wildly patterned shorts. Hawaiian print and paint splashed shirts were also seen paired with walking shorts or cropped pants. As the weather got cooler, new fads appeared. People were seen wearing sweaters in everything from crew necks to deep V'd shaker knits. Shirts were bigger and longer in vivid colors and pastels, geometric prints, plaids, flowered prints, and paisley. These prints also showed up in pants and jeans. The new idea in pants was stirrup or stretch pants, but jeans were still the basic in everyone's wardrobe. Levi's 501 jeans were popular for both guys and girls, and for girls, LEE brand button fly jeans were available. Guys were seen wearing T-shirts, polos, sweatshirts, oxfords, sweaters, and sweater vests. The in coat was a Tec-umseh Indians jacket or letter jacket which held the letters and medals the wearer earned in sports or academics. To find out how much longer for the 3:35 bell to ring, a lot of people looked at unusual watches made by SWATCH, A WA TCH, and others. Even the feet were well dressed. As al- ways, flats were popular with the girls. So were cuffed boots, tennis shoes, loafers, and, for dressier occasions, pumps. For guys, high top basketball shoes were popular, left untied of course, deck shoes, worn without socks, and penny loafers. The newest thing in basketball shoes was NIKE's AIR JORDANS, named for Michael Jordan of the Chicago Bulls. There are many other fads that there is neither time nor space to mention here, but they're around. These fads may last for 1 or 2 years, or even more, but one thing we can be sure of - new fads will be back next year, strong as ever. 3 Patterned pants and jeans were the in thing in 1985-86. famie, Sandra, and Jodi pose for the camera. People boogied to a separate beat from coast to coast; from the purified country sound of Alabama to the upbeat rhythm of Dire Straits. Many new or foreign groups crashed the American charts for a very exciting year in the sound business: such as Tears for Fears, Sade and Wham. There were also many veterans of the business that shined as bright as always: Pete Townsend, Lionel Richie and Dionne Warwick all had a lot to be happy about this year. There were also a few that decided to expand their talents; Madonna posed for a few snapshots and Bruce Springsteen helped everyone with their 501 blues. There were many popular actors and movies this year also. One person in particular, that really was busy, was Sylvester Stallone, in Rocky Four and Rambo First Blood Part Two. There were many other good movies like the Breakfast Club, White Nights, St. Elmo's Fire. The big surprise was Whoopi Goldberg in the movie The Color Purple. In the world of television, there were many things to laugh about also. The Cosby Show had a lot of viewers and also kept the number one spot for most of the season. Some other good shows were Miami Vice, Dynasty and Cheers. 18 Students at THS watched and listened to Madonna, Don Johnson, Sylvester Stallone, Chevy Chase and Bryan Adams during the year 1985-86. Hey, do you have computers done I Does varsity have practice tonightI If you were anywhere near the junior lockers this year, you probably heard questions like these quite often. The 85-86 Junior class had their chance to shine this year. After hard work the past two years, many of us finally had the opportunity to play varsity sports and to participate in various organizations as the leaders and officers. Yes, we are now upperclassmen! (continued on page 22) 21 But with the title of 'upperclassmen', we now gained many new responsibilities. The first we had this year was magazine sales. Previous sales records were broken as we sold more this year than had ever been sold. Mitch Lade was the top seller and won a ski trip to Colorado. Many other juniors won various prizes for their efforts. The second project we took on was the bonfire for homecoming. We were in charge of getting the traditional 'T'on the west hill ready for the big night. Many juniors worked hard to make our part of Homecoming Week a success. Prom was our last big activity of the year. As juniors, we were in charge of everthing. We had to pick a theme and colors for the dance and we also had to arrange the dinner. We found out that it wasn't as easy as we had anticipated. But we had a lot of help from our sponsors Mrs. Frost and Miss Muller. We all thank them (or their time and effort in making this year's Prom a successful evening. Pella 'waves' goodbye to his junior year! 22 Zjwo yJear.'t J-t jt J nd (Counting . . . Two years left and counting was the thought of many of us when we first walked into school as Sophomores. Our first main project was to decide on a Homecoming theme. We finally came up with the theme ,Heaven and the colors light blue, blue, and silver. We also had to sell jewelry, calendars, and etc. to raise enough money to pay for the D.j.'s and for other expenses that went along with Homecoming. Class rings were the big thing this year since we had been waiting for them fora long time. Also, since most of us were just turning sixteen we really looked forward to getting our licenses. This way we could go cruising without out parents tagging along. Altogether, this year has been a great year, even with Biology! 24 men On OLir a On August 22, the class of '89 began their first year in high school;a time that they thought would never arrive. They started off the year with two new students which made the class total 28 but this declined by one at the end of the first semester. The freshman class became involved in many activities throughout the school. They participated in the high school athletic activities and joined the many different clubs such as FBLA, Drama Club, and Y- Teens. Also, several freshmen were involved in the all-school plays and musical. This was the first year that representatives on our student council expressed their views about our school. This year was the first year the freshmen participated in the homecoming celebration by being selected as attendants, enjoying the dance and cleaning up afterwards. Overall, the '85-'86 school year was a terrific way to start! The next three years should be just as great! In years past, most of the work done for the Annual was completed after school, before school, or during free periods. This year, a special class, Publications, was added to the list of scheduled classes, and was designed especially for the task of piecing together the Yearbook. Not only did Publications provide time for work on the Annual, but the staff members were also able to write articles for the Tecumseh Chieftain. Under the sectional headline The Indian Beat, staff members reported on school-related events, community activities, student opinions, and often conducted interviews of other students, faculty members, and people in the community. Some students also supplied examples of creative writ- 40 ting and humorous stories. But despite the convenience of having time during the school day to devote to the publishing of the yearbook, the staff members, just as in years past, often waited until the last minute to meet their designated deadlines. Mrs. Sheryl Allen, the Annual Staff sponsor, could often be seen sitting at her desk during Publications, staring at her staff members with a very worried expression on her face, as she wondered whether or not they would actually come through and get done on time. Another problem faced by the staff was the breakdown of the enlarger, a machine used for the printing of photos in the darkroom. This event was complicated even further when delivery of a new enlarger was delayed for more than a month. It was times like these when Mrs. Allen undoubtedly wondered why and how she ever managed to get stuck in such a hopeless situation. But by the end of the school year, it was pretty dear that the 1985-1986 edition of Tecumseh High School's Yearbook would be a success, and maybe it was a worthwhile enterprise after all. r V' r Mrs. A. bestowing her editorial wisdom. Besides the usual things they did in class (drawing, calligraphy, clay, and batiks), the club members were involved in several other projects. First of all, Beatrice Concrete sponsored a Paint the Drum contest in which different schools painted the drum of a cement truck with their school logo, colors, etc. The Tecumseh Art Club members participated, but since there are still quite a few schools that haven't paint- ed, the first place prize is still up in the air. March was a really busy month. On March 8, the club sponsored a Hawaiian dance. The theme was WIPE OUT and the gym was decorated with palm trees, big Hawaiian flowers, and even an erupting volcano. Dan Hutt and Eric Bartels played the music as people danced, dressed up in bright Hawaiian prints. In the gym you could almost forget that outside it was still too cold to wear shorts. The Art Club sponsored the 4th Annual Tecumseh Art Show, March 16-21. Ten schools displayed works as well as Tecumseh. Everyone did a great job, as was shown by the awards won by participants from Tecumseh. So it's back to the drawing board for next year when I'm sure that there will be new tasks to conquer, greater challenges to be met, and a new supply of clay to mold. Outstanding members were announced and the newly elected officers were installed. It was truly an exciting year for Tecumseh FBLA! Our local FBLA chapter had a lot to be proud of this year! With membership exceeding fifty, students had the chance to become very involved in FBLA's activities. In November, a breakfast was held for American Enterprise and Education Week and our Christmas party in December was highlighted by the appearance of Santa Claus. In January, we were lucky enough to have five State Officers and one National Officer speak at our meeting. Our own Jason Morrissey was present as State Reporter. On April 11, thirty local members left with Mr. Harsh-barger and Miss Schropfer for the Nebraska State Leadership Conference in Omaha. During the first two days, students took tests in various business areas. Those attending also enjoyed a 50's dance contest in which many Tecumseh members participated. Tecumseh had three candi- dates for State Office this year and two were lucky enough to join the State Officer Team. Hard work prior to the conference as well as during made the campaigning educational and fun. This was evident when Jason Morrissey chose Mark Beethe and Dennis Bane as his Campaign Managers. Homecoming activities started on October 14 with Pride 11 Week. Monday was Plaid or Pioneer; the winners were Miss Muller and Mr. Boldt - Plaid, Mrs. Kerr - Pioneer. Tuesday was Rainbow Day; each class was assigned a color. Overall the Seventh Grade won with the color red. Wednesday was International or Indian Day; the winners were Marika Holm-strom and Mr. Rother-lnterna-tional and Laura Pieratt-lndian. Thursday was Disney or Dress up Day; the winners were Michelle Hershberger, Heather Weiss, Nicole Behrends and Jennene Shuey-Disney. Friday was our traditional Black and Gold Day, the winner was Jodi Peters. On Thursday night, the traditional bonfire was held at the football field, with a car bash and pep rally before hand. On Friday, there was a pep rally held in the high school gym. The I.A. Club put on a great skit that helped everyone fire up about the nights game against Auburn. After the game, the students went to the Homecoming Dance which was held in the elementary gym. This years theme was Heaven. The color scheme was basically blue and silver, and stars, clouds, streamers, and balloons accented the gym. The students danced to popular music provided by Bigg's Sound. Ballons, stars, and glitter were dropped on the dancers about half-way through the dance. Homecoming 85 was definitely a day to remember. Jodi Peters won first place for Black and Cold Day. Next year we will miss these actors and actresses and the talents that they possess, but as always, the old must make way for the new, and a fine group of underclassmen is ready to fill their shoes. Under the direction of Robert M. Beadell, Jr. and Harold Scott, the classic musical com-edy was a success (even though the dates had to be changed because of the filming of the movie Amerika, and the second night's performance was delayed for over an hour because of a track meet). If each of you have confidence in each other, we can play like a team and beat all of our opponents. Of course, they didn 't have a perfect season, for mistakes were made by all. (But then who's perfectI) But they did give it their best and when the season was over they had one of the better records that have ever existed at T.H.S. This year they also had an extra special athlete on their team. Marika Holstrom, from Finland. She compares the differences between volleyball in Finland and volleyball in America. There is more competition here between schools and the players are more dedicated than in Finland. 9 Coaches Harshbarger and Schropfer commented on the season. We were pleased with the total performances of the team members. A definite plus of the season would be that a lot of underclassmen gained valuable varsity playing experience which will help make for a strong team in the 1986 season. There were thirteen letter winners and they have nine lettermen returning next year. Each senior volleyball player agreed that There was a great team effort put forth this year and next year the team should be a pretty good one. For our last year we were pretty happy with the season. XL Jf kL hands you a lemon mabi B.d WtsUWon, 2W 115 As the '85-'86 school year comes to an end, so do the pages of the yearbook. Each class views the end of school differently. The freshmen breathe sighs of relief now that they will no longer be on the bottom of the ladder. The sophomores celebrate the idea of returning next fall as upperclassmen, able to look down on the new freshmen and sopho- 116 mores. But the upperclassmen seem to be looking even further ahead. The juniors dream of next year, when they will be seniors, finally able to take definite steps toward the future. They watch this year's seniors as they receive their caps and gowns and prepare for graduation. Last of all, the seniors look to the end of the school year with mixed emotions. They are happy that graduation has finally arrived, and they are ready to step into the adult world. But graduation also signifies the impossibility of ever returning to those high school days. Perhaps this is what the first graduates of Tecumseh High School felt. One hundred years ago marked the first high school commencement in Tecumseh. Lelia Dew, Eva Forbes, Carrie Hotaling, Minnie Hotaling, Maude Talcott, and Edith Wright were the members of this first graduating class. Since then, the student body has grown in numbers, this year yielding a graduating class of thirty-five. Although it is not possible to thank all of those who are responsible for making Tecumseh High School one of the best schools anywhere, the Yearbook Staff would like to take this opportunity to thank Mike Diffenderfer and Greg Adams, representatives from the Walsworth Publishing Company for their advice. Also, special thanks go to Paula Warrender for providing many of the photographs for the yearbook, and to Carolyn Zellmer, for designing the cover of this year's Annual. Thanks to all of you! mWALS WORTH PUBLISHING COMPANY MARrtLINE MIUOIRI USA mWALS WORTH PUBLISHING COMPANY MARCCUNE MISSOURI USA
