Camera . . Action . . . Curtain Rises The stage is set for the start of another school year. As the curtain rises you see the usual hustle and bustle of the first day of school. The students are checking to see if they have all their “props. (Notebooks, pencils, pens, and etc.) Many of the students have mixed feelings and for the “Seniors of ’85” it was one day closer to graduation. It was the start of a great school year. This year was a little different in that there were eight periods instead of seven. This made the homework load a little heavier, but the students and teachers somehow managed. There were also a few new teachers and several new students. A lot of other changes were made too, most for the better. No one will forget the ‘ 84-85” school year. It was a time for change and advancement and because the people at Tecumseh High School wished to have a quality learning experience — the changes were faced squarely and the necessary adjustments were made. The students and teachers alike had a school to be proud of. It was a super year. Graduation is assured. You call that wrestling? Pat shows his skill. 2 3 Faces of 84-85. Spike and Sam. Leha’s latest fads. 4 Stars Of The Show The seniors worked their way up the ladder for thirteen consecutive years to become the stars at THS. They did not only need great pride in their school but pride within themselves. They can only achieve this stardom through perseverance. And by this persistence, they became star attractions in sports, music, drama, other organizations, and most of all academics. Each star had the ability and the opportunity to develop as an individual and to become his or her own person. Relationships endured through these years as good times were shared, as well as the fear of what lies ahead of unforgettable memories. Every class has the chance to become a success but not without the desire to set that goal and the energy to accomplish it. They were not always stars. They had to start somewhere as you will see . . . Their parents were the ones who started them in the right direction and kept them in line by teaching them right from wrong. Also, the seniors would not be here today without the teachers making them strive for the very best. The show is not over; although, it is time to make new goals and begin building new relationships. The curtain has closed only on this act! Next in line for the Oscar!! Homecoming King and Queen. Class officers: Terry K. Treas.; Jim F. Vice Pres.; Lloyd K. Pres.; Patty B. Sec. 6 I 1. In the beginning of the year, the juniors sold magazines, records and tapes to raise money for the Junior-Senior Prom of 1984-85. It was very successful and they raised alot of money. This year the juniors were in charge of the flaming T”, which was at our homecoming bonfire. We took one night out of the week, which was Wednesday, to clean out the “T and fill it back up with wood for the big activity the next night. The flaming “T” was also a success. Suzanne Davison and Mark Beethe were the junior attendants for Homecoming. The junior class of 1984-85 had a great year. Next year they will be the “Stars” of Tecumseh High School. It was made even better by the addition of 4 new students making the total number of people in our class 43. With such a large class, we’ve had no problem making our mark on THS. Many of us participated in various activites including sports, plays, and contests. We found we were alot more ambitious this year probably because we’re getting over the shock of being freshmen and are becoming more familiar with THS. Our big project was Homecoming. Alot of money-raising, planning, and decorating went in to making the Homecoming dance a real success. We held a car wash in September to raise some of the money for this event and it was also very successful. With the help of our class sponsor Mrs. Frost, we decided on the theme of “Magic”. Altogether, the sophomores had a very successful year and were glad to be a part of the 84-85 THS production! T? The whole class worked together and showed their school spirit by winning first place in the Homecoming hall decoration contest. Many of us were very enthusiastic and joined different organizations and clubs our first year. We also contributed to sports and other social activities. We have made it through the first of four years here at THS together with three more to go. So watch out, because here comes the class of “88”. Class Officers: D. Ramsey-Treas.. J. Hood-Sec.. M. The faculty gives countless hours to the school system. They do more than just grade papers! Lets take a look into the typical day of a teacher. They get up at an early hour so that they can be at school beforehand to help students with problems. They then spend the next eight hours instructing students in the hope that they will become more knowledgeable. That is not all! The faculty stays after school to provide help for those who need it. Some teachers also coach after school or sponsor various events or clubs. Lets not forget to mention the times that they sell tickets at bail cont. on page 30 Mr. and Mrs. Anderson at home with Kip, Karey and the family pet. 28 Mr. Harshbarger gives piano lessons to Karey Anderson. Mr. and Mrs. Frost take advantage of the nice afternoon. Mr. Loew is busy at his desk. The Allens hit the slopes at Trailridge. 29 games and the time they spend supporting the school athletic teams, chorus and band concerts, plays and musicals. So you see a teacher leads a very busy life. After all their school oriented activities they still find time for their own families. A teacher truly is an amazing person. On these few pages we will give tribute to these terrific people. We all know they deserve much more credit. But, this is our way of saying THANK YOU to a super bunch of people. The Templemeyer family includes three children: Zak, Toby, and Heidi. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson relax at home. Mrs. Palmer enjoys a spring day in the best possibly way. 30 Mrs. Parrish prepares computer activities for her classes. Ryan and Brent demonstrate the finer points of golf to Mr. Richards. Mr. and Mrs. Brommer play with their sons. Our schools administration helps keep this pride within our students, teachers, and community. Not only do they do their job, but they do their best to make our school a very special place to learn. They also dedicate their efforts to our youth so that they may be involved in the best educational system possible. They care about the students at THS and make it a great place to receive an education. For these reasons, the administration deserves recognition for making THS what it is today. Superintendent Thomas Rother. Principal Galen Boldt 36 Nice Hat!! Appreciation Sheri Sapp, Marie Kuhl, Carol Hutt, Oleta Rinne, and Irene Krontz. The THS staff is made up of people who dedicate themselves to keeping our school a clean, well kept place to learn. We could never thank them enough for all they’ve done and we could not have had as marvelous a performance without them. Not only do we appreciate the hours that they’ve spent “behind the scenes” but also the support that they have given to all the organizations, fund raisers and athletic teams. They’ve helped us obtain a great school spirit and the show could not go on without them. Cindy Boldt, Betty Morrisey, and Judy Vance. Above: Gwen and Terry. Below: Keith Wagner, Lloyd Fricke, and Jim Allen. The Producers The “Producers” of this yearbook, the annual staff, have put in many long hours to make this production, the ’85 Tomahawk, a success. The 1984-85 staff had a new outlook, under the direction of their novice sponsor, Mrs. Allen. They had many different ideas and exciting plans for the Tomahawk, which they managed to pull off, despite some minor tribulations that they encountered during the year. One new dimension was that there were only two people, Carol Chritton and Dana Ramsey, that were in charge of selling the advertisements. Not many people realize the time and hard work that it takes to produce an annual. The members of the staff have to make sure that everything on their pages is just prefect and then wait a year before they can see their finished product. The Tomahawk crew started their work at the beginning of the year when seven members attended a workshop in Omaha. Those attending were: Carol Chritton, Stephanie Rother, Michelle Stauffer, Tracy Searcey, Ben Walters, Matt McDonald, and Patty Burns. From that moment on it was work, work, work!!! The ’84-85 Tomahawk editor was Patty Burns. Carol Chritton was the Co-editor and Scott Shuey served as the Chief photographer. Michelle Stauffer and Dana Ramsey also spent some time behind the camera. The ’84-85 Tomahawk crew did a super job and definitely deserve a big round of applause. There were twenty-two members in Art Club this year. On March 15th the Art Club sponsored a dance with the theme of “I Wanna Hold Your Hand.” Music was provided by Bigg’s Sound. Other fund raising projects included the care of a candy machine and painting hangers at the airport. The money raised went toward the purchase of magazines for the Art Room and an air brush and compressor. The $100.00 Art Club Scholarship was presented to Eric Bartels. On March 17-22, an art show was held. The judge was Mike Fowler, an Associate Professor of Art at York College. Eleven schools participated in the show. These schools included Tecumseh, Falls City, Auburn, Palmyra, Johnson-Brock, Pawnee City, Sterling, Adams, Humboldt, Table Rock, and Nemaha Valley. The students did an outstanding job at the show with the following students winning awards: Jason Lacey in printmaking, Greg Cooper in printmaking, Paula Dris-kell in sculpture, Jennene Shuey in pottery, Nicole Behrends in open three-dimensional, Michelle Stauffer in printmaking and open three-dimensional, Matt Vance in sculpture, Ben Walters in sculpture, Jim Wenzl in pottery, Melissa Roberts in drawing, Kellee Meints in drawing, Eric Bartels in drawing, Jackie Packett in drawing, Mike Clifton in drawing, Carol Chritton in sculpture and pottery. The FBLA and Student Council combined forces and hosted a breakfast for the faculty and staff. For a money making project this year, FBLA members got people from the community to volunteer to take Harris Labs skin patch tests. The project was a tremendous success! The FBLA would like to thank all those people who participated for their time and effort in making the project work! The T-Club’s primary responsibility this year was the election of candidates for Homecoming. Five senior girls and five senior boys were chosen., Six T-Club members also served as judges for the spring cheerleading tryouts. The judges were Michelle Earhart, Dana Ramsey, Lori Othmer , Dennis Bane, Andy DeFreece, and Jason Morrissey. Magic Homecoming was definitely a magical week for everyone at T.H.S. The students started off the week by dressing up for baby day, twin day, idol day, punk rock day, and our traditional Black and Gold Day”. The excitement started to increase as the week proceeded toward Friday. On Thursday the traditional bonfire was held at the west side of the football field. In addition to the flaming T, a wrecked car was brought to the football field decorated in the opponent’s colors. Then the students who wished to participate, took a sledge hammer and smashed the car’s sides. This event increased everyone’s desire to win the game Friday night. On Friday, there was a pep rally in the elementary gym. At the pep rally, awards were presented to the students and teachers who showed the most spirit. The cheerleaders did various skits and other activities at the pep rally to build up spirit for the big game that night. Everyone’s curiosity began to build as the football game neared halftime. Then the moment finally came. The Candidates for King and Queen were out on the football field. Then the new 1984-85 Homecoming King and Queen was announced. This year’s King was Lloyd Kettelhake while Laurie Goracke became the new Homecoming Queen. After the game, the students went to the Homecoming Dance. This year’s music was provided by a disc jockey. Football ’84-85’ The Tecumseh Indians hit the practice field in late August realizing the road ahead was not an easy one. The 1984 football schedule was a difficult one at best. One which included four class B schools. Tecumseh also began practice with a new coach. Paul Wilson was now in charge of the team. Assisted by coach Richards they set out to prepare the Indians for the upcoming season. The season opener had Tecumseh falling victim to a top rated Milford team. Tecumseh then bounced back from the defeat to win over Wymore Southern. Tecumseh came up short the following week in a well fought game against Bennington. The Indians then got back on the winning track beating Omaha Flanagin and evening their record at 2-2. Tecumseh then seemed to hit a slump. Losing four in a row to Tri-County, Syracuse, Auburn, and Wilber. The Indians then showed their pride and ended the season with a victory over Falls City and wound up with a 3-6 record. Thank You, Sheryl Allen, Sponsor 111 I hardly suppose I know anybody who wouldn’t rather be a success than a failure. Just as I suppose every piece of crabgrass in the garden would much rather be an azalea, And in celestial circles all the run-of-the-mill angels would rather be archangels or at least cherubim and seraphim, And in the legal world all the little process-servers hope to grow up into great big bailiffim and sheriffim. Indeed, everybody wants to be a wow, But not everybody knows exactly how. Some people think they will eventually wear diamonds instead of rhinestones Only by everlastingly keeping their noses to their grhinestones, And other people think they will be able to put in more time at Palm Beach and the Ritz By not paying too much attention to attendance at the office but rather in being brilliant by starts and fits. Some people after a full day’s work sit up all night getting a college education by correspondence, While others seem to think they’ll get just as far by devoting their evenings to the study of the difference in temperament between brunettance and blon-dance. Some stake their all on luck, And others put their faith in their ability to pass the buck. In short, the world is filled with people trying to achieve success. And half of them think they’ll get it by saying No and half of them by saying Yes, And if all the ones who say No said Yes, and vice versa, such is the fate of humanity that ninety-nine per cent of them still wouldn’t be any better off then they were before, Which perhaps is just as well because if everybody was a success nobody could be contemptuous of anybody else and everybody would start in all over again trying to be a bigger success than everybody else so they would have somebody to be contemptous of and so on forevermore. Because when people start hitching their wagons to a star. That’s the way they are. By OGDEN NASH In short, Ogdan Nash takes a realistic view at success. The road to success is a long and hard one, but with the knowledge acquired at THS it may be a little smoother. Patty Burns, Editor
