We all remember the first day of school, which officially started on August 22nd. From that day on till the end of the school year there was alot of enthusiasm from everyone and we were determined to make this school year the ' best'' ever. Enthusiasm combined with determination helped to achieve many accomplishments. The athletic department was very successful. The volleyball team had a winning season along with the football team, who were Conference Champs. The girls on the Cross Country team went to state and placed eleventh. The Wrestling and Basketball teams continued to improve as the season progressed. We can all replay the times we have had at Tecumseh. Of course we have all faced some hardships, but our many good times together and our many achievements have helped to outweigh the problems we've faced. All of these memories we will cherish always and they will help us to strive to reach our goals throughout our lives forever. The students have alot to be proud of at THS. May this enthusiasm help the students in the years to come to continue to make THS the best'' ever!! The Spirit of the Sky We look across the water. And see the setting sun. And is the sun just like our lives. And are we nearly done? The routine of our lives. Are like the quiet seas. We struggle for the distant shore. To be all that we can be. Never stop believing, in who and what you are. And never stop your dreaming, And following the distant stars. But when the sun has set. And the sky is black as coal. Our .hearts will keep on beating. And we ll live within our souls. The beauty of this world. Is like the colors of the sky. You see only what you care to see, And it changes with the eye. 2 Jana busy studying again in the library. Lynette Bartels Kim Badertscher Karen Bartholomew Seniors Fever As the days came closer for the graduating class of 84, there was alot of planning to be done by all. There were many questions asked such as what they would be doing in the future, where would they be going, and many more unanswered questions which were thought about throughout the years. The “best highlight of the school year was discussing and deciding the class colors, motto, flower and ordering announcements. Everyone had a different opinion on what they wanted, but with time all of the discussing turned out to please all. Excitement stirred as everything came closer together. The seniors were becoming anxious for the prom and wanted to make it their best prom ever, knowing that this was to be their last year for a high school prom. During their classes the seniors were busy working hard to successfully achieve many of their old goals, and to start thinking about new goals to set. They all had their times throughout the last 13 years and were ready for that most exciting day that all the seniors waited for, “Graduation . As the memories went back through the many years at THS, they remembered the good times, and for a few, the not so good. But all this was worth remembering because those were the best years. Their forty-six members made up the largest class at Tecumseh High School with Stephanie Rother as the newest member. Terry Kuhl was at his best in football. He received the All Conference Linebacker award. He also received several offers of football scholarships. The class had many other members on the football team who did exceptionally well also. The Juniors were well represented on the volleyball team with several starters and many others who came off of the bench ready to play. Several class members participated in Cross Country and had a good season. The class pulled together early in the year and sold magazine subscriptions. The fund raiser was intended to raise money for prom which the Junior class was in charge of. The overall sales endeavor was a success. The fall musical cast included several Juniors who had leading roles. Dan DeFreece played Charlie Brown, Scott Shuey portrayed Snoopy, and Denice Smithers acted the part of Lucy. The cast also included other Juniors who did a super job. Continued on page 18. Class Officers: Patty Burns, V. The Junior class was in charge of the bonfire for homecoming. They used the T” on the hill and one evening was spent clearing it out. After this was completed, some members experienced more excitement. Laurie Goracke and Lloyd Kettelhake represented the class as Junior attendants. Junior members were involved in all winter sports. Both girl’s and boy's basketball teams consisted of many Juniors and these members were real assets to the two teams. The wrestling team had a lesser turnout of members from this class but Scott Shuey, Steve Parrish, and Kevin McKinney did a nice job of representing the Juniors. Members of the class were also an important part of the golf and track teams. Several members who chose not to compete in sports found they were counted on to keep statistics and records. When the class was called upon to provide the soup for the soup supper given in memory of Darren Mattheis, once again they pulled through with each member donating one gallon. Several individuals were involved in special academic contests and most all took skills tests to find possible unknown abilities. The Junior class of 1983-84 had an outstanding year, which they felt was the best yet. Patti: Mr. Richerts helper Mike Pooch states a fact. Kris, what are you studying? Dave Hutt Shueyl’S Mark P. Computer Wizard Jim F., Keith L. and Dan D. 18 Those are our football players? Really!? Halfway There The seniors of '86 began their sophomore year with high hopes of the successful completion of exactly one half of their high school education. The sophomores had a great time preparing and decorating for Homecoming. This year’s colors were light blue and dark blue, and topped off with a large painting of an evening scene done by a very generous art student. The theme this year was Sweet Dreams”, and after several weeks of careful searching and budgeting, the sophomores hired Rex Hedding and his band to make the Homecoming dance a great success. Now the sophomores began turning their thoughts toward next year and the Prom decorating, the class sold jewelry and calendars to raise funds for this project. Over 1,000 dollars were raised. Hopefully, their remaining two years of high school will be as great as the first two. All the text books, material, and facilities in the world do not make a school. The following is what makes a school: THS school students are building a pride and a tradition that will last and grow in the minds and hearts of every person that comes into contact with any aspect of the school. Teachers dedicate their efforts to our youth that they may gain wisdom and stature to become better citizens by making progress in their education keeping abreast with the times. The result of the above can only result in a top notch educational system, that is student and parent orientated. Front Row L to R: Bonnie Shuey, Dr. Ted Evans, Gary Pope. They also help to give our school a good reputation of a clean well kept school. They do a great deal for everyone and we could not have a school that runs well without these people. All of the people who are connected with Tecumseh High School thank them for the way they keep the facilities kept up. We couldn’t thank them enough for all the hours they have helped at the school, and all the support they give to all the organizations and their fund raisers. Their unfailing support to all the athletic teams is especially great. They provide us with this great school spirit and some of them are our best fans. Thanks THS Staff! Each member contributed many hours of his or her own time. Putting together an annual is not just looking through a bunch of photographs! It also involves thinking of just the right caption or sentence to preserve the memories of our high school years for many years to come. They strive to make it an annual that everyone can be proud of and save it to show later generations. Lynette Bartels assumed the responsibilities of the Editor. Scott Shuey was chief photographer. Time was spent preparing and learning about the court system. Steve Mercure came to school during class time to help prepare for the upcoming trials. The Plaintiff team competed on November 7th against Southeast. They did a great job of presenting their case but fell short of winning by a small margin. On November 9th it was the defendant team vs Johnson-Brock. The case was lost but they accumulated more points on overall performance and that's what counts. The case involved Terry Vickers sueing Sandy Hearst for an accident which involved Vickers and Ivy, who attended Sandy’s holiday get-together, causing injury to Vickers. The teams were at their best although neither one of the teams placed in the top four. DEFENDANT TEAM L to R Front Row: J. Schultz, S. Shuey, P. Kerner, Attorneys. Back Row: D. Hutt, Alternate; J. Club The Industrial Arts Club, under the leadership of Mr. Eugene Shuessler, had one of its best years ever. As an annual fund-raiser the club cut firewood to sell. For a community project the members donated their time and raked the city park. Afterwards the ones that worked were treated to a pizza supper at the Tecumseh Pizza Hut. The club is also working towards paying half the bill for a new welder that will help students have finer finished projects. A new thing this year the club started, was giving a hundred dollar scholarship to a senior in the club. In the summer, to finish off the good year, the members went on a weekend camping trip at a state park in Nebraska. Many would say this club is at its best, because it truly is! 49 Ecology Club The Ecology Club elected Dan DeFreece (president), Mitch Oth-mer (vice-president), and Jana Ramsey (secretary treasurer) for the officers of 1983-84. There were thirty-eight members in the club, which included 12 Sophomores, 12 Juniors, and 14 Seniors. On January 7 the Club raffled off a sleeping bag, cooler, and a day pack. They made $310 from selling raffle tickets. Later on in the year, they distributed phone books throughout the community for the telephone company. The weather cooperated with everyone so it was enjoyable. The money was for the Seniors to go to Keystone, Colorado on June 3-7. The ten seniors enjoyed five days of learning about the outdoors. Also, they went hiking, skiing, and enjoyed many beautiful sights in the mountains and surrounding areas. Officers: Dan D. Jana R. and Mitch 0. Front Row, L to R: P. Kerner, A. Lempka, J. Vance, T. Nebraska, for a canoeing trip down the Niobrara River. They had four fun filled days. The morning they went canoeing it was cold and rainy but that didn't stop people from having fun. By the middle of the day the sun came out and made the trip a little more enjoyable. There were many sights to see. like water falls, wild animals along the bank, and lots of beautiful country. There were only a few minor incidents along the way such as tipping the canoe over, hitting trees, etc. but nothing serious. They learned how to make Hunters Stew and they cooked most of their meals over a camp fire. They all stayed in one big cabin and slept on the floor. It was pretty hard to do when you were so sunburned and sore that you couldn't even lay down. But it still was a very enjoyable time for everyone. See I told you the water wasn't deep! 51 Band Members Front Circle L-R: Leha Cox, Tyone Aim. Kelly Wilson, Stephanie Bartels, Kelly McKinney, Michelle Earhart, Lucinda Mahoney. Media Club During the 1983-84 school year, the Media Club increased its membership to 22 members. All members this past year have been working at their best to raise money. The money they have raised went towards the purchase of a port-a-pack video camera for use throughout the school system. Media Club has also been raising money for a new computer, which is to be placed in the Elementary School Building. This year the State Convention was held at Pioneer Village in Minden. The Media Club left at eight o’clock in the morning and they returned the following evening. They were greeted by a guest speaker who told them about Willa Cather and the early pioneers. After dismissal from the convention center, the students were able to tour Pioneer Village, where they learned a great deal about the history and the early life of the pioneers. 55 Hm Ec Club The Home Ec Club, started fresh this year with a new name (formally FHA), and many new members. In August, a get-together was held at Patti Shuey's home. Everyone got together and brainstormed new ideas for goals and fundraisers. During the football season, the organization sold concessions. To help the Homecoming spirit, HEC sold various colored helium filled balloons, to be let go at the first Tecumseh touchdown. December 19, brought our Christmas party. Everyone brought their singing voices as they caroled at the hospital and the care center. After their singing debuts, everyone nourished their voices at the Pizza Hut and then opened gifts at the Hesman's home. On April 28, HEC sponsored the March of Dimes WalkAmerica, for a second year. The scenic eighteen mile walk was to St. Mary and back to the high school. It was completed by almost everyone who entered. The person with the most pledges received a portable B W TV set. The remaining walkers drew for prizes donated by various Tecumseh businesses. At the end of the year, the Home Ec Club will provide a $100 scholarship to a senior of HEC. Each night at camp three different squads would be awarded a spirit stick for having the most enthusiasm. The Tecumseh Cheerleaders received the spirit stick three times. Also while attending the camp they were awarded several different ribbons. When they returned from camp the cheerleaders were well prepared for the season. The cheerleaders enjoyed cheering and had fun planning pep rallies to help raise school spirit. To raise money, the cheerleaders sold Tecumseh Indians T-Shirts. Money raisers included the very popular spirit grams and a bake sale. A Christmas Party was held again with each member bringing a youngster to visit Santa. Heart Sister Week was a success again this year with the sabatoging of members lockers by all. The Y-Teens own Easter Bunnies helped with the Easter Egg Hunt again this year for the Tecumseh children. At the latter part of April a Pizza Party was held with the handing out of certificates, bars, and letters. It was enjoyed by all!!! Kris Amy trying to look busy!)! The members decided not to let the new members know of their selection until Honors Night. The new members learned of their selection by having members of NHS go out into the crowd and telling them that they were chosen to be members of NHS. There were six seniors, three juniors, and four sophomores. Although the National Honor Society did not undertake any new projects, they did order new pins and awarderd certificates for recognition as being a new NHS member. Also, the Senior NHS members graduated wearing the Honor stoles. The society has many goals, among them being to promote leadership, service, and character in students. The society attempts to instill these values in its members hoping that its members values will spread to others. The members of NHS truly deserve this excellence and achievement that they earned in academics. NHS Members: Front Row L to R - D. Holthus, D. DeFreece, Sponsor - Mr. Blumhorst, L. Ketttelhake, T. Best Of Times Homecoming activities to promote school spirit started off Monday, September 26th with Spirit Week. During this week students were to show their school spirit by dressing up for Exercise Day, Show Your Style Day, Cowboys and Indians Day, The 50’s Day, and the traditional “Black and Gold Day. At the end of the week prizes were given to persons who showed the most spirit. Spirit Week also consisted of the traditional bonfire which was held Thursday night at the west side of the football field, a car rally followed. The car rally appeared to be the highlight of homecoming week until it was put to a stop by the Tecumseh Police Department. Soon the big day everyone was waiting for had finally arrived, all last minute preparations were being made. Everyone was ready for the big game that was to take place that night. School was dismissed early for the Homecoming Pep Rally which took place in front of the football grandstand. That night at the game everyone was anxious to learn who would become the new 1983 King and Queen. The moment had finally arrived, at halftime the Class Attendants and the King and Queen Candidates all marched out onto the football field. A sudden silence then came over the crowd as the announcer said, “And this year's King and Queen are Mitch Othmer and Lynette Bartels”. This year’s King and Queen were then crowned by last year's King and Queen, Darren Mattheis and Laurie Ramsey. The crown bearers were Missy Bohling and Mark Amos. The THS Football Team proved to be At Its Best that night when they had won the game against the Axtell Eagles with a score of 20 to 15. This years Motto was: Remember Yesterday, Dream Of Tomorrow, But Live For Today. Jill Parrish was honored as Valedictorian and Tom Finn as Salutatorian. Both presented speeches and were awarded certificates for their honor. As the graduates become alumni of THS they will all Remember Yesterday and the times they have spent together, Dream Of Tomorrow and hope their paths will cross again, but we all know they will Live For Today. The chairs were filled by many guests who joined the occasion. At 6:30 p.m. the activity began with a pot-luck dinner, which was enjoyed by everyone. The guest speaker for the evening was Mr. Tom Baach, a UNL Asst Men's Basketball Coach. He talked about 3 important things that athletes should achieve — they are: 1. You should have a long term goal, 2. You should make a commitment, and 3. You should have self discipline. The individual letters and awards were presented to the athletes for their achievements. A total of 101 letters were presented. We were proud to have state competitors in the various sports. Thanks to the many talented students and the fine coaching staff. Mr. Tom Baach — guest speaker Pat receives the Fred Seckman award. Jill and Kristy — Galaxy Conf. 1st Team in VB Mike earns one of many awards in BB. Top Job The Tecumseh High School volleyball team compiled a record of 9 - 8. This is the best record since 1976. The highlight of the season was taking second in the Syracuse Tournament. Two of the team players received honors. They were Kristi Vance and Jill Parrish. Both were named to the first team in the Galaxy Conference. These two also received post-season honors in the Lincoln and Omaha papers. Coaches Harshbarger and Frost stressed that it took “one game at a time and one match at a time to win.” With that in mind the team set out to improve themselves and that they did! There were 11 letterwinners this year, with 5 of them returning next year. Everyone on the team will always remember having to do the jumping drill, the 3-C's (confidence, concentration, consistency), jamming-out on the bus, and whaling on our opponents. BYE-GOLLEY! Back from the previous year they had 10 returning lettermen. These were Jon K., Scott P., Steve P„ Tim H., Destry H„ Tim Y„ Jill H„ Kim B„ Leah C.. and Amy V. The year started a week before school started, with practices of running on country roads. They ran from 3 to 7 miles a practice. This was a new experience for some. The first meet was at the Tecumseh Invitational. The team did well although they ran in 90 degree temperatures. The runners improved each meet with eleven meets for both the guys and gals. At the district meet the boys team was hampered by an injury. A highlight of the season, was when the girls went to the state meet and placed eleventh. With everything considered, it was a good year. Golf Prax Steve Shaffer's first year of golf was well represented by his achievements during his Senior year. This year the THS Golf team did an outstanding job. They participated in many Invitationals, placing in the majority of them. The team went to such places as Auburn, Wymore and Geneva. In the Wymore Southern tournament, they placed first. In the varsity, Jim Finn took a first at the meet and on the Reserve, Russ Waring took first at Geneva. Considering how the weather was and the number of practices they missed out on because of it, the team did an excellent job. They had three freshmen ioin this year. They were Jamey Hahn, Chris Johnson, and Russ Waring. Hopefully, we will gain more members in 85”. Five members of the golf team went to state this year. Jim Finn, Matt Hamer, Tim Haughton, and Dave Hutt. Matt placed 10th at Districts, and the 1983-84 outstanding golfer was Jim Finn. 84 Tom and Dave waiting their turn to play. For the fourth year in a row the Indians captured the district crown and won the right to play in a regional game, which decided that we would go to the state tournament. In their first round of confrontation at districts, which were held at Beatrice, the Indians soundly defeated the Southern Raiders This victory enabled Tecumseh to have the right to play for the championship where they came from behind to top the Wolverines of Wilber-Clatonia. In the past three years the Indians were defeated at regionals, but this year their luck changed and they came out victorious. They had beaten David City and earned the right to play in the State Basketball Tournament. In the first round at state the Indians defeated Utica Centennial, but were defeated in the semi-finals by Madison, the eventual state champs. Post-season honors went to Mike Yates who was selected to the 1st team all-state in the Lincoln paper, 2nd team all-state in the Omaha paper, 1st team in the Galaxy Conference, and was also selected to play for the South team for the Coaches All-Star game. Tom Finn was selected to the 2nd team in the Galaxy Conference, and was also a Honorable Mention All-State selection. Mike Mandery was selected to the 2nd team in the Galaxy Conference. Starters throughout the year were Mike Yates, Mike Mandery, Tom Finn, Jim Finn, and Tim Haughton, with Dave Holthus, Terry Kuhl, and Mark Beethe seeing a lot of action. Everyone was very proud of the team and would like to say “congrats on a super season”! This was caused by the fine efforts and many wins by all team members. Good Job Wrestlers!!!! Special attention was given to two of the THS Wrestlers, who had a very spectacular season. Mitch Othmer, a senior, wrestled in the 185 pound class this year and took first place at C-1 Districts. He went on to take a seventh medal at state in his weight division. The girls have been asked to do a wide variety of events despite some complaining they are doing it for the benefit of the team. They finished 7th in the Galaxy Conference meet at Conestoga, which was the highest finish of the year. They were led at Conference by Jill Hahn who received 4 medals with a 3rd place finish in the high jump, 5th in the 3200 meter run, 6th in the 1600 meter run and ran a leg on the 3200 meter relay team which captured a silver medal. Other individual medal winners were Angie Sherman, 3rd in the 100 meter run and Tammie Sabotta, 6th in the 3200 meter run. The 400 meter relay team finished 6th with Stephanie Rother, Amy Kuhl, Tammie Sabotta and Angie Sherman comprising the team. Other members of the 3200 meter relay team which placed 2nd were Terri Evans, Amy Volkmer and Tammie Sabotta. The letter winners and their individual point winners were Jill Hahn 34 V3, Angie Sherman 14 V2, Tammie Sabotta 4 V2, Terri Evans 3, Amy Volkmer 3, Lori Othmer 2 V4, Stephanie Rother, V2, and Amy Kuhl V4. Other girls participating this year were Kelly McKinney, Denise Smithers, and Kris Speckman. At the conclusion of the District track meet and the season for the girls, Jill Hahn was named as the most outstanding track member for 1984. Prospects for a better future are bright with seven returning letter women and the addition of the Jr. high girls who were conference champs. This should help bolster the overall team standings as they will be stronger in more areas. Lori, practicing for the 100. Terri, running the 1600. Front Flow L to FI: Coach R. Richards, K. There was one senior member, five junior members, three sophomore members, and six freshman members Although the team consisted of many underclassmen, they proved that this was not a downfall and experience was gained throughout the season. The team worked together as a whole and gave each other support throughout the entire season. Mike Yates, the only senior member, finished the entire season and should be commended for being the team captain and leader. Although the weather hampered many practices and meets, success was inevitable. Performance, both in running and jumping, continued to improve as the season progressed. Tecumseh, again this year, hosted the Second Annual Tecumseh Invitational held on the Syracuse track. In this meet, the boys placed fifth out of twelve. Individual scoring on the year for the team was as follows: Senior: Mike Yates - 28; Juniors: Tim Laue - 44’ 2; Dan DeFreece - 34’ 2; Terry Kuhl - 29V2; Bob Lempka - 36’ 2; Kevin McKinney - 1; Sophomore: Dennis Bane - 291 ; Freshman: David Bane - IV2; Jeff McCourtney - 8V4; Jason Morrissey - 19V4; Todd Morrissey - 7’ 4; and Vance Whitwer - 28 %. Dennis Bane, Vance Whitner, Jason Morrissey “Champions - At Last” The 1983 football season was one that could be called the year of goals. All of which were achieved except one, the one of winning the state-championship. By setting a goal each week of practice, of winning one more game, the team compiled an impressive 6-4 record, the Galaxy conference championship, and the first state-playoff berth in 40 years. Although the team came off a very disappointing 1982 season, hopes were high at the beginning of the year for an improved season. By hard work and determination of both coaches and players success came in a hard fought battle. Often overcoming a large number of injuries by playing underclassmen. The hard work and determination proved itself on the field with a winning season. Led by the hard running of l-back Dave Holthus the Indians took off to a 6 - 0 start, with victories over Connestoga, Louisville, Wymore, Weeping Water, Axtell Kansas, and Palmyra. The turning point in the season came with a disappointing loss to Auburn, which was followed by losses to Wilbur, and Tri-County. Though hampered by three losses at the end of the season, and a large number of injuries, the team managed to win a bid to the state playoffs. The team played one of its best games of the year before losing to the experience of 1 rated Wilbur. Coach Roger Hill summed up the 1983 season stating that 1983 provided the school with its best team” in the years that he has been at Tecumseh. There were no great standout individuals as there had been in the past. It was the teamwork that made for an excellent year. They were always waiting for this day to arrive but when it finally came there was mixed emotions. As seniors, they can ail look back at their many years spent here at THS, and they now realize how the time seems both long and short. They all have had many hours of homework and studying which made the time seem long, but they now realize how important the homework was to them and to their future. They also have shared many good times together, even when they were younger, and they seemed to have happened only yesterday. Everyone had gained something that had changed them in some way. As seniors and underclassmen, they have all set many long range goals and have tried to achieve them. Each and everyone were striving to make their life all that it could be by combining their knowledge and abilities with determination. The staff here at THS were at their best”, always willing to help these students to reach these goals. The Class of 84 owes a big thanks to their parents, friends, and the faculty, who have all helped in making much of their life possible. They all appreciate the encouragement and fine education that was received here at THS. They have all helped someway in their attempt to be all that they wanted to be. They all know they have found the best here at THS. Those who have already graduated from THS and are on their own now know what the real world is like. As the graduating class of 84, they too, will learn that the path they have tread all these years gets steeper and the climb has just begun. So this they now know is not an end but only a new bigger and better beginning. 112 WALMWORTM PI. HUMMING COMPANY MARCEIINK MISSOI Ml 1 0 if — —.
