LaVon O. - example of great determination I know I'm smart, tell me I’m beautiful There are times when being a Senior can be exhausting Senior cheerleaders with their Garfield spirit display Anatomy kids teaching Icky-Blicky to Chow-chow-chow Nobody Said It Was Easy! That’s right, nobody said it was easy. The THS class of 1983 found that out. The past 13 years weren't exactly easy. They have had their good times and they have had their bad times. But, whether they were good or bad, they were their times, times that none of them will ever forget. Like they say, your high school years are years that you remember as the most fun, the most heartbreaking, and the most exciting. The members of this class were well represented in sports, drama, music, and various organizations. Each person of this class has also excelled in his or her own way. Whether it be in academics, atletics, or club achievements. Achievements as a class have included in past years: cleaning up after Homecoming as Freshmen, hosting Homecoming - ‘Against the Wind , and hosting Prom - Don't Stop Believin'', winning hall decorating during Homecoming and keeping open campus. They also discovered that they don't always agree on everything. This was proven when they chose their class colors, motto, and flower. It was also proven when they chose their senior announcements. But then everybody has their own opinions. They tried to be good and they tried to set good examples, but sometimes that was easier said than done. Nobody said it was easy, but they have all made it. They couldn’t have made it without their friends, parents and teachers. They owe them all a great deal. True, everybody says that parents and teachers aren't any fun. In reality they do care, more than they could ever know at this point in their lives. Their time as seniors has now come to an end. They leave the school to the classes who are to come. They can now call themselves alumni of Tecumseh High School, as adults or graduates, with the old cliche — The ending is only the beginning that lies ahead! Only Time Will Tell As the 1982-83 school year came to an end, the Juniors soon realized that the end of their high school days were drawing near and the dreams of their future were close at hand. The Junior class was in charge of the bonfire. They were also a winner for having the best window display. Jill Parrish and Mitch Othmer were the Homecoming Attendants. Several college-bound students took the P.S.A.T. test. In November they attended County Government Day, with sponsor, Larry Anderson, learning about the duties of the county offices. The Juniors were very active in sports. Kristy Vance received All Conference Second Team in volleyball during the season. Raising of money for prom proved to be hard work but well worth the effort. The Out-of-Sight Goal was reached raising $2,500.00. Frank Rothell and Jill Hahn were top salespeople. Jeff Fink won the special drawing for the TV Radio. Many of the members were involved in organizations and received parts in plays. Taking an interest in these activities kept many students in or at school many hours a day. To start the year off, the first major task at hand was one of decorating and preparing for Homecoming. Under the leadership of Mrs. Palmer, the class sponsor, committee's were set up to go about the business of hiring the band, decorating the gym, and taking care of refreshments. After much deliberation the theme Fantasy'' was decided upon with colors of Royal Purple, Orchid and White. The band Rex Hedding was hired to provide the music. The class attendants for Homecoming were Patty Burns and Bob Lempka. To help finance Homecoming expenses the class took to selling jewelry and posters, which turned out well thanks to community support. The ordering and receiving of class rings was of major importance as most of the class were able to scrape up enough money to retain memories of T.H.S. To many of the class members for the year was very important in that many of us received our drivers licenses. Making it legal to cruise up and down the streets of town. The 82-83 school year was a very active once since the class members participated in almost all of the school clubs and activities, along with being very active in all sports. The year offered a great variety in work and in our dreams as we all plan for the future. The thought of 11 years of school behind us is hard to imagine, we've come a long way, together but it's been fun and rewarding. Front L to R: T. Evans, Treasure, Back: K. Laue, Vice President; L. Freshman of “83” ... The Freshman Class of 82-83 got off to a good start this year with 12 additions to the class, increasing its population to 38, later decreasing to 36, with the departure of two people, Dave Bicknell and Winnie McDaneld, whose families moved and they transferred to other schools. All of us were enthusiastic about taking part in high school sports, clubs, and activities, and even cleaning up after Homecoming. Already, our class is planning for next years’ Homecoming when we get to decorate for the dance, and we've started raising money by selling pens and tickets to the games. Our only major casualty was when Lavon Othmer broke both his legs in a riding accident. But luckily he wasn’t hurt worse, and we can only hope that next year will be better. With the arrival of the new Freshman Class also comes new-found talent. Three Freshmen, Matt Hamer, Allen Mitchel, and Lucinda Mahoney, were chosen to play leading roles in the Drama Departments’ Fall play “Finders Creepers.” Good Job. We’ve had great times during our first year of THS and look forward to many more in coming years. One Sophomore — Tammie Sabotta, and our little mascot — Karey Anderson. It was a fairly new squad so they attended UCA summer cheerleading camp in Lincoln for one week. They learned new cheers, jumps, routines and pyramids, it was hard, but they showed spirit and won many ribbons and the spirit stick. They won 2nd in the parade, ordered new uniforms, and had to work early morning practices into their already busy schedules. They had many creative ideas for all of their pepralleys, homecoming days, and homecoming parade, posters and many others. This years cheerleaders were a special group of spirited girls, when they were cheering for the Indians it truly was emotions in motion . We wish the 83-84 Cheerleaders success in their leadership. Wild Ones Y-Teens had a fun and wild year! They were active at Homecoming by assisting with the coronation by ordering flowers, making banners, and doing the candidate write-ups. Money raisers included spirit grams which were very popular again this year, and having the wrestling concession stand. Heart Sister week got wild at times when the secret pals left surprises in their Heart Sisters locker. The Easter egg hunt went off well with the help of our Y-Teens Easter Bunnies to hide the candy for the Tecumseh children. The year was topped with a Field trip to Lincoln to visit the zoo, although the girls got as wild as some of the animals at times. Mrs. Richert kept them under control. Jody is caught in the act. Kelly - Its all in the line of duty! Amy is Santas little helper. 25 Physical This year for the first time boys and girls T-Clubs were combined. Their first task was painting the weight room and the coaches dressing rooms over the summer. When the school year started they decided to have a parents' night for the football, volleyball, and cross country teams. Their fund raising activities included taking tickets and officiating at the Tecum-seh Jr. High Volleyball Tournament, being the chain gang for all junior varsity football games, taking down and putting up chairs and tables for the Tecumseh Chamber of Commerce Banquet, and selling official district volleyball T-shirts. The year concluded with the purchasing of chenille emblems for athletes who made All-Conference, All-State, or were State qualifiers. T-Club was sponsored by Mr. Roger Hill and Mr. Ted Harshbarger. Senior Student Council Representatives: Dave Miesbach and Bob Watteyne handing out report cards during Parent Teacher Conferences. Take It Easy The Student Council's first order of business in the new school year was to elect officers. They elected Dave Miesbach (President), Pat Johnson (Vice-President), Laurie Ramsey (Secretary), and Jill Parrish (Treasurer). They performed their routine duties such as coordinating the homecoming activities, running the elections for Homecoming King and Queen and County Government Day, being guides for open houses, handing out report cards, and making a suggestion box available for students. A new edition to this years activities was honoring the teachers during the “Nebraska Tribute to Teachers”. The council put up signs saying Thank You Teachers!”, awarded teachers certificates of appreciation, and made some cakes for them. The council’s major source of revenue was a foosball table in the guidance counselor’s office. It’s revenue was used to fund any expenses encountered by the council plus a few scholarships at the end of the year. Some possible ideas for activities to finish out the year were a career day for high school students and a Dollars for Scholars fund. Dave Holthus studying (?) and Pat Johnson taking it easy while handing out cards. 27 Elegant Abstractions The 1982-83 Art Club started out the year by electing it’s officers which are as follows: Deb Chritton, President; Karen LaFrance, Secretary; Jim Grof, Treasurer; with Mrs. Tempelmeyer, Sponsor. As in the past the Art Club members sell candy after school on alternate nights to raise money to buy a display case for the High School. In December the Art Club members sponsored a Winter Ball, with Kevin Colbert as Disc Jockey. He did a super job. There were plenty of dancers at the dance and they looked like they were having a bail. Best of Luck to the Seniors of Art Club, they will be missed. Take Care and “Best of Luck. The Industrial Art Club members cut fire wood during evenings in the Fall to sell for cash. Many club members enjoyed this money making project and it was profitable. During the winter the club held worknights in the evenings so that they could work on projects of interest to them. Many members worked on a variety of projects ranging from wood-working to heavy metal. Nine Industrial Art Club members along with their sponsor took one of the school vans and attended the State Leadership Conference in Lincoln for two days. State officers from THS were Brian Volkmer, President; and Steve Carpenter, Secretary. The conference was held in the State Educational Bldg. Not now Sherml! Eric, deep in thought. Grass skirts were made from newspapers and food was ate. The City Council gave the go-ahead to paint house numbers on curbs. Some were painted in the fall and some in the spring. On November 10, the members, a long with Mrs. Hesman attended the District Convention at Louisville. The mini sessions and the guest speakers were great. FHA-HERO week was Feb. 6-12 with many activities being planned. Many other activities for the spring were planned, including a Lock-Out and a dinner for the senior family members. In April, the new officers, along with Mrs. Hesman were “On the Road Again” to Lincoln for the State Leadership Conference. FHA started over successfully with 15 members and a sponsor all contributing many hours, and receiving much enjoyment. At the beginning of the year instead of getting ahead start on their pages everyone wanted to put it off until Tomorrow and go out and Rock the Casbah but as time drew near for pages to be done and the Slow Ride” was over everyone realized it was Urgent” for them to get their pages done and just when we thought we were Running on Empty” something came through and showed us the “Rocky Mountain Way.” Although it sounds like hard work to do pages and get them done on time it is just A Day in the Life” for most of us. But while we thought we were “Born to Run” Mr. Loew thought he had us “Under his Thumb.” He was saying to us most of the time Take it Easy. “You Can't Always Get What You Want. Sometimes it was just fun and games, but when you get right down to it, it was a lot of hard work and a lot of time was spent racking our brains trying to figure out just the right way to state a sentence or come up with just one more line or caption. I’m sure we will all agree that the time we spent working on this book was well spent. So that in the years to come people can look through here and say I wonder what ever happened to him or I wonder what she's doing now or just, I wish we could Do it Again. Although we all take credit for doing this annual and getting it done on time, we would like to offer a special thank you to Julie Sherman, our Chief Photographer, without whom our Dreams and our Yesterdays would never had been Photographed and put in this book. So as you Turn the Page and go “Reeling in the Years” remember all the Long Time and hard work that has gone in here just for you. They were President, Steve Carpenter; Vice President Karen LaFrance; Secretary, Trish Kremke; Treasure, Frank Rothell. They had a grand total of 21 members this year. State Convention was at Grand Island. They left Oct. 11 and returned Oct. 12. They stayed all night at the Super 8. The convention itself was held at the Stuhr Museum. They were greeted by a guest speaker by the name of Dr. Robbert Manley. He told them about the early pioneers. They took them through an old town that was dated back to the early 1900's. They learned a great deal about the history and culture of the early pioneers. 33 Business As Usual for FBLA L to R-First Row: S. Packwood, S. Davis, R. Koehler. Second Row: L. Goracke, D. In November, during American Education Week and American Enterprise Day, the chapter prepared a breakfast honoring Tecumseh faculty and administration, and Tecumseh business owners and managers. The breakfast was a success with a large crowd attending. During December, State FBLA Parliamentarian, Karen Loftis, visited our chapter talking on parliamentary procedure. She was accompanied by Rick Ehlers, Seward FBLA President. An Advisory Council was established to give our chapter ideas on how to raise money and to advise us on how we can become more involved with the community as a whole. A Chief of the Month”, award is awarded each month. This award is given to an individual or a business who has accomplished outstanding achievements. The FBLA also organized speakers to talk during business classes, and raised money through concession stands, the dance marathon, and the raking of leaves. FBLA took part in many other activities. Members worked at a concession stand and took admission fees for jr. high athletic events. In addition, members voted to reinstate the paying of membership dues. The club initated eleven new members this year in ceremonies held during the Top Ten Banquet. The members decided it would be best not to let the new members know of their selection until the banquet. At the banquet the new members learned of their selection by an old tradition of being tapped on the shoulder by a member. The year ended with the annual outing to Lincoln to eat spaghetti and attended a movie. The society’s goals are to promote leadership, scholarship, service, and character in students. The society attempts to instill these values in its members in hopes that through it's members these values will spread to others. Making this world a wonderful place to be. Everyone was anxious to learn who would be homecoming candidates, attendants and King and Queen. They were also curious as to what the spirited students could find for costumes and would we win the game? Their questions were answered homecoming week when the students dress as New Wave Rockers, Preppies, Old People, Aliens, Different Nationality or as Stars of Commercials. Awards were given. A bonfire with the new flaming T’ was held with a car rally after. A new tradition was started-The Homecoming Parade. Halfway to the Square the rain began and never let up. The “Top Ten academic classification is based on a students accumulative grade point average. Also the students who have raised their accumulative gradepoint average to the greatest percentage from the previous semester receive a top average award. Each student who is honored receives an honor certificate as a memorable keepsake of being so honored. Dick Kimbrough told the students to set goals. If you set goals early, you can achieve them. Don’t get sidetracked in life. Set goals you will like — that will make you happy — not just giving you fame and fortune.” “Many people like your parents and teachers have helped you with goals in the past,” he continued. Many will still help. The Reverend Gerald Goss gave the invocation for the potluck meal. The meal was shared and enjoyed by the students, parents, other family members and the faculty. 45 Abra-Cadabra Like magic fifteen students transformed a bare stage into a complete set with polished characters for the fall play FINDERS CREEPERS. The season was one of great expectations with 19 returning lettermen and being ranked 8th in the state. Predictions for a great season could be heard. But these hopes suddenly turned sour and were gone as the Indians came up with a disappointing 1-8 season. The first game was a very disheartening loss to Conestoga 18-0 followed by losses to Louisville 20-6, and Wymore in a double overtime game where Tecumseh came up one play short to lose 9-6. Followed by losses to Weeping Water 34-12 and Axtell, Kansas. The highlight of the season came at Homecoming when the Indians beat Palmyra 14-7, when the team finally got things together for the only win of the season. The season finished out by losses to Auburn 40-6, Wilber-Clatonia 19-6, and Tri-County 27-0. The 1982 season was described by Coach Hill as one where the team lacked the leadership that it had the year before and that once the team lost it’s first game, it was hard to get back up from the first few losses. Caroline Anderson taught the girls how to warm up with aerobic dancing. Many practices began with “Jane” (Fonda) or “Richard” (Simmons) adding a little fun or at least a little music to warm ups. The volleyball team finished with a 6-11 record which was the best record since 1978. The highlight of the season was the team's third place finish in the Galaxy Conference Tournament. The team had set their sights a little higher but the girls proved to themselves and evidently to a few teams that they could play volleyball. The team had four players receive recognition for their play during the season. This goes to show that the team had alot of talent. It also shows that their was a lot of work behind the scenes. Without the help of talented teammates these girls would have never received recognition. It took teamwork to win games and Coach Harshbarger stressed all year team before self . The girls knew united as a team they could win. The season proved that united they could play with the best but divided they would fall. The Varsity Squad included 1st row — Ann Lempka, 2nd row — Patti Kerner and Shirley Smith. 3rd row — Tammie Sobotta, Jana Ramsey, and Kristy Vance. 4th row — Julie Little, Lynette Bartels, Julie Vance, and Jill Parrish, 5th row — Kate Morrissey. Team won 3 duals and 2 triangulars. The boys placed 7th, 8th and 5th and the girls placed 5th, 2nd, and 3rd at Invitationals. At state the girls placed ninth. Jill Hahn had a 15th place finish with a time of 17:42 while Leha Cox was 38th with 18:58, Kim Bohling was 45th with 19:11, and Amy Volkmer was 63rd with 20:52. They finished with 118 points. They ended the season with Jill Hahn, Leha Cox, Jon Kroeze, and Scott Paden being named to the All-Area All-Star team. The boys brilliantly captured the district championship by avenging an earlier loss to state ranked Tri-County in the final round of district play. They were stopped short of state tournament play by top ranked Henderson in a regional playoff game. The boys worked very hard all season to be put up where they belonged. They weren't one of the top ranked schools in the state but they proved they were one of the top teams in the state. They had a very tough schedule to face the first part of the season. They outplayed many opponents but the game is won by the team who puts the ball in the basket the most and that came tough for the Indians. It was a frustrating year for the team to say the least. Though the team performed well at most all of the duals and tournaments, success came hard because of a lack of experience among many of the team members. The team was also hampered due to a lack of numbers at certain weight classes. The only dual meet won this year was against Deshler. The team worked hard and spirits were generally high through the season. However, the lack of experience showed up in many of the meets. Yet hard work did pay off since several of the team members were able to come home with a number of medals. The wrestlers could not have done as well as they did without the fine coaching of Mr. Richert and Eugene Schuessler. They both worked the boys hard to get to the end of the season. Don’t Fight It Don't break his arm Mitch. 72 73 Three Records Fall in “83” The track season started on a high-note for the boys team as a 25 year-old record fell in the meet of the year. While competing at the Peru State Invitational indoor meet, Bob Lempka and Jason Horn smeared the previous record of 5-10 5 8 set by Jack Stinson in 1958 as they both cleared 6-2. Horn also set a meet record in the triple jump as he went 41-5V2. The team finished 3rd which turned out to be the highest finish of the year. One other record that will be placed on the boards as in Kansas, the boys threw the javelin. Bob Lempka, although he did not place, claimed the record with a spear-chucking throw of 123-8 at the Axtell Invite. A first this year was the hosting of the 1st Tecumseh Invitational on the Syracuse track. As a team, the Indians were 3rd of 10 behind Class B Auburn and Falls City. Lempka gained the only gold on the day in the high jump at 6'. Performances, both in running and jumping did not improve as much as the coaches and athletes had hoped for throughout the year. Adverse weather and mental conditions may have been reasons leading to the cause. Individual scoring on the year for the team was as follows: Senior: Bill Hansel - 18; Juniors: Jason Horn - 88, Pat Johnson 10V2, and Mike Yates I6V4; Sophomores: Dan DeFreece - 47V4, Jim Fricke - 4, Tim Laue - 32V2, Bob Lempka - 26V2, Kevin McKinney - 7, Scott Paden -17, and Steve Parrish 4%; and Freshmen: Dennis Bane - 21 and Scott Stewart - 16. Prior to the state meet, these two were named co-outstanding members for the 1983 season. Julie, known to teammates as ‘‘LOU or SHERMAN , was the school's only state qualifier as she made the trip to the big show in the shot put for the third straight year. Sherman threw 38-8’ 2 in the districts which was her best ever to earn the ticket. Sherman’s previous best of 38-4 set a meet record at the Tri County Invite. Sherman only competed in two events, the shot put and the discus. Kate set two records during the year which saw her improve continuously throughout the year in all her events. While competing in eleven different events, she proved her diversibility which helped the team. The first record she set was in the 300 low hurdles at Axtell as she ran 3rd in 53.0. Sheri Davis' record of 2:32.6 in the 800 fell as Kate went 2:31.6 and then 2:25 at the Tecumseh Invite. The squad will be young next year but the coaches are optimistic as most of the girls times and performances improved during the year. With continued work, each will get better. Individual scoring for the girls was as follows: Seniors: Renae Koehler - 1V4, Trish Kremke IV2, Kate Morrissey - 79V4, and Julie Sherman - 103%; Junior: Jill Hahn - 30’ 4; Sophomores: Terri Evans - 6%, and Tammie Sobotta - 4%; and Freshmen: Leha Cox - 6V4, Suzanne Davison - 2%, Angie Sherman - 34%, and Amy Volkmer - 3%. 76 .7 !■ j, . Although the team experienced a year of rather dismal weather to contend with, they continued to improve their record and ended by qualifying for the State Class A tournament which was held in Alliance. In qualifying for the state tournament it would indicate the team was one of the twelve top teams in Class C action this year. At State, the team placed 10th out of 12 teams. Very commendable, and we thank them for their efforts. The team lost two seniors, Kelly Mitchel and Bill Baird, but in the reserve ranks are several players who will fill the gap created by the loss. Congratulations to a fine team on a very successful season. Jim Finn - It's all in the wrist. Tom Finn - It may be a hole in one.” 78 Coach Anderson and team. Mitchel ‘'putting” around. Upon arrival at school, we are often greeted by the secretaries who are looking after Business As Usual.” As lunchtime rolls around, we see the cooks who have been at work all morning to Stir It Up.” Throughout the day, the janitors are kept busy making our school a more pleasant place to be. They have the challenge of working with the Board of Education, the staff-which includes the teachers and the support crew, and also the students. They must also put up with the many pleas of “Turn Me Loose” by the students and sometimes staff of THS. Dr. James E. Ossian is in his fourth year at Tecumseh as superintendent while being the head administrator and having to report to the Board, he also serves as the elementary principal. In his second year as high school principal and boy's basketball coach, Galen Boldt senses the need to make school a positive experience for everyone. Dr. Ossian: 'Urgent !
