Volume LVIII q banner year I UUM T WC rntrMnC They told me that Life could be just what I made it-Life could be fashioned and worn like a gown; I, the designer; mine the decision Whether to wear it with bonnet or crown. And so I selected the prettiest pattern- Life should be made of the rosiest hue-Something unique, and a bit out of fashion, One that perhaps would be chosen by few. But other folks came and they leaned o’er my shoulder; Somebody questioned the ultimate cost; Somebody tangled the thread I was using; One day I found that my scissors were lost. And somebody claimed the material faded; Somebody said I’d be tired ere ’twas worn; Somebody's fingers, too pointed and spiteful. Snatched at the cloth, and I saw it was torn. Oh! somebody tried to do all of the sewing, Wanting always to advise or condone. Here is my life, the product of many; Where is that gown I could fashion—alone? THS Class of The Seniors of 1981 face their graduation with mixed emotions. We are eager to get out of school and go out into the world and make something of ourselves, but yet there is a feeling of sadness because we have to leave such a big part of our lives behind us. Our high school years are kind of an uphill battle, because it is a highly emotional time in our life, and when we finally make it through we feel a great sense of pride because the battle is won and we are now ready to go out and face the world. We were all deeply saddened by the loss of one of our class mates, but that tragedy brought us all closer together and made us appreciate our lives so much more. The road ahead of us is a long and winding one, and no one is sure of what is awaiting them, but I am sure that we will look back at our high school years as warm and fond memories. Nice legs Scott! They soon realized that the end was drawing near, and dreams of their future were close at hand. The year started off in a different fashion than the last, taking tests for the Army, and of course the P.S.A.T. for the college bound. The Juniors were not highly represented in sports, but those who were out, received many starting positions in their sport. The raising of money for the prom proved to be quite a task. In fact, the magazine sales was not enough to satisfy our needs, so we had to resort to other means of making money. This years class officers are: President, Brenda Miesbach; Vice President, Beth Davison; Treasurer, Ron Hackbart; and Secretary, Kenny Lueders. Soph Heading For Tomorrow The Seniors of “83” took charge of Homecoming “80”. Against the Wind was the theme for the occasion. The colors light blue, silver, and lavender were twisted and coordinated around the gym to give it the decorated look. The class spent the day of the dance to put up streamers and other decorations. The committee that picked the music had a tough decision on their hands; they had to stay in a price range, and choose what teenagers listen to today. In their search they found “Chaser”. Kate Morrissey and Bob Watteyne were the class’s choice of attendants for homecoming royalty. Many Sophomores were active in sports and various organizations throughout the school year. Working in the organizations kept many students in or at school many .hours of the day. Bob Watteyne was named to the First team all-conference as an offensive guard. Many other sophomores earned letters during the past year of sports. Still working on ths decorations for the dance tonight? Keep up the GOOO WORK! R. Badertscher J. Bailey B. Baird D. Bicknell T. The cheerleaders for the 1980-81 sport season were Kelly Hesman head cheerleader, Teresa Bohling, Renae Koehler, Trish Kremke, and Karen La France. The Junior Varsity were Jill Parrish, head Cheerleader, Jill Hahn, Deb Chritton, and Kim Badertscher. There were no try-outs because not enough girls wanted to be a cheerleader. So the job was given to the girls. They attended a camp at Doane College in Crete July 9-16. They spent the days learning new cheers to use during football and basketball seasons. They also learned routines, jumps, pyramids, and met many friends. They were given each day to practice so they could show the cheerleaders that were in charge of the camp what they had learned in a day. They slowly improved each night. The Junior Varsity were given the chance to compete in the final competition. The Varsity won a trophy for the most improved squad. Throughout the week ribbons were given out for each night’s performance. The J.V.’s brought home 4 ribbons and the Varsity 5 ribbons. There were conflicts among all of them. But things usually turned out okay. They did their best cheerleading without the pep club. GO BIG T” and DEFENSE were among the fan's favorite cheers during basketball districts. Pep rallies and other things were planned by the cheerleaders. Junior Varsity: Top Jill Parrish (head cheerleader), middle Jill Hahn. Kim Badertscher, and Bottom Deb Chritton. And that’s what happened to her . . . But what about them . . . Y-Teens Have Comida Time Helping with Homecoming coronation is getting to be a school tradition for the Y-Teens. They chose the colors light blue and silver for the candidates and attendants banners. While people were making banners, others were writing stories for the paper and the football program. Next on the agenda was a field trip with the FHA. They left one morning for the Youth Developmental Center at Geneva and the Women’s Reformatory at York. Between the two stops they ate Godfather’s Pizza. In January, a potluck supper was held. Heart Sister Week came upon them the week before Valentine’s Day, in which they played their gags and jokes on their Heart Sister. On Friday they gave each other their gifts and told who their Heart Sister was. As usual, the group packaged candy for the Easter egg hunt for the kids of the community. 27 Row 1, L to R: T. The first thing on their minds was to make some money. The girls sold cakes at BB VB games. The traditional parents nite for the VB BB games were held, and flowers were purchased for the mothers. The busy schedule of the girls, stopped a lot of accomplishments, that could have been made, but all seemed to work. To show the spirit in our club, the girls performed a skit before the boys played in regencies. The future plans of the club is to buy new banners for the conference teams that were lost. The first thing they accomplished was the purchasing of flowers for parents night at a basketball game. They ordered honor patches for all-conference football, all-conference basketball, district basketball champs and wrestling champs. These will be given to the members who received them during the athletic season. The final thing that the club did during its enthusiastic season, was the boys “T Club Senior-Facutly basketball game. Although the seniors won 92-59, the game went well and both teams had a good time. With the 80-81 year ending the Club looks forward to next season. Up For Grabs Wenzl's Picture Perfect Form T-Club Runs In Shadows 29 Diversified The Student Council was involved in a number of projects in 1980-81. The group co-sponsored the Spook-A-Rama for the elementary school in October. Considerable work went into the project, to the delight of the elementary students. The Council purchased a Christmas tree in December. The tree was decorated with volunteer decorations from homes of council members. The foosball table continued to be an excellent source of revenue. As a result, the council contributed to the Tecumseh Community Scholarship fund. A suggestion box was constructed and made available to the students. It is the hope of the council that this will enable the students to express themselves more about things that concern them. Members provided refreshments for the Parent-Teacher conferences and distributed report cards to parents as they arrived for the conferences with the teachers. Finally, the members took a good look at the Student Council Constitution, resulting in a few changes. Annie Puchalla the Spook-A-Rama scene. Back — L to R: Danny Mattheis. David Miesbach. The Club has done fund raisers again this year with some being the same, but some being different. They were: a dance, which was a big success, the selling of candy, which helped our funding. We also did a courtesy service for the Maple Grove Home by cleaning the inside and outside of the premises. We feel that 1981 was very rewarding and successful and we are all looking forward to 82. When Mrs. Tempelmeyer once again helps, teaches, pulls, and pushes us toward our goals. What a bunch of bums. Don’t look so surprised, you’ll blow It. Art Club Officers, L to R: Sec. They toured the Women’s Correctional Center in York and the girls’ in Geneva. The girls sold concessions at many of the football and basketball games along with those at the plays. Along with this they brought enjoyment to many of the sick and elderly at the hospital and care homes with caroling at Christmas. Also, with the help of Tammy D., Sandi P., Diane W., Deb S., Kelly H., and Deb C.f the Tecumseh community held a Senior Olympics with a banquet before hand. With this year ending now it will eliminate many good and faithful members; but along with them leaving, many new will enter. Good Luck F.H.A. 1982! Lloyd Laue — Industrial Arts In Action I. A. Today The Industrial Arts Club took part in this years elementary spook arama and they held a Co2 model car race which was enjoyed by many students. They had a work night every Tuesday night, whereby; they worked on any shop item of interest to them. For a community project they made name plates for the elderly at the Manner, and went Christmas Caroling. They delivered phone books around town for one of their money making projects along with the cutting, selling, and hauling of firewood. Their travels took them to Kearney to attend the State American Industrial Student Association Contest. As their sponsor: Mr. Adrian Falgione says, “They are the best chapter in the state.” They only lost one contest last year and they were also honored by Governor Thone. On April 24th they had a parent son banquet in which they received awards and elected new officers. Front: L. to R. Brian Volkmer. Larry Goracke. Chris Mason, Steve Badertscher, Allan Lempka. Perhaps the many captions write-ups will not say everything, but enough was said to express the action, motion, or depict the character involved. To do a good Annual page it takes about 15 hours of total time. In itself that is a multitude of effort time spent on work nights in compiling the data, having the Editor, Janet Phillips, and Sponsor, Mr. Loew, checking the many stages of completion. Students were asked about their opinion of what was expected of them during the process. They were: challenging, worth-while, frustrating, memorable, fulfilling, and the waiting eagerness of seeing the end product when it arrived from the bookmaker in late August of 1981. 34 Back Row, L to R: Mrs. McDowell, Joe Osslan, Jamie DeVorss. The club did many things this year. They started out working on the computer again. The students enjoyed and learned from it. They sold at concession stands for basketball games also. The club went to the Regional Library Convention. Two of the members held offices. Sandi Parrish was President and Kathy Kroll was Secretary. Two more Tucum-seh people will hold offices again for next year. They are Becky Hauptman - Vice President and Karen LaFrance - Treasurer. The library media center received a new magazine rack with 10 new magazine subscriptions as a gift from the Tecumseh Building Loan. It was a very good year!! Why the starey eyes girls!?! Their major activities were Career Day, attending State Leadership Convention and the Dance Marathon. Besides these activities the club also sponsored a dance and raffle, held a coffee in honor of the teachers and hosted a hospitality room for District Volleyball. The Club’s major reward for this year was to be one of two schools out of 89 in Nebraska to receive the Golden Round Award! This award was achieved by increasing their membership from 31-42 and activating a new chapter-Nemaha Valley. At the State Convention Tecumseh was also very honored to be represented by George Schmidt who took first place in Accounting II. Since the club was the most active in the school their accomplishments are too numerous to mention. Many of the members were extremely busy as they ran concessions for both fall sports and basketball. In recognition for their hard work an outstanding member from each class as well as an overall outstanding member, they are: 9th - Jill Parrish, 10th - Susie Davis, 11th - Scott Davis, 12th -and overall Julie Morrissey. Although the club was unable to have any entrants in the speech contest due to many other conflicts at the time all activities went well and it was a well sponsored event. The major highlight of the club’s year was when the One-Act play from Tecumseh was honored to attend the state event. The play, “The Flying Doctor” received Class C third place honors at this event. The band was made up of only thirty-five musicians but there was a great deal of talent and desire in the band and they seemed to manage. The band started the year by marching at several football games, and were also a part of the State Marching Contest at Pershing Auditorium in Lincoln. The band then sat down and prepared for several concert performances. They held a Fall concert, a Winter concert, and performed again in the Spring. They also performed at clinic which was held at Tri-County, and there were thirteen honor band members. The band then went on to Music Contest at Auburn where they received a II rating for their performance. The band had much talent within it and there were many experiences they will long 44 remember. The thirteen member stage band strived for recognition, but recognition wasn’t found as the latter part of the school year progressed. What was found were people asking the question if they would ever perform. With nine members dropping out of class at the semester and dropping the class itself meant morning and evening rehearsals. By picking up another six people along the way, the tally totaled to ten. With only four people in High School and the rest in Jr. High, the band did perform under the direction of Miss Joy Werner, with its new members at the last concert of the 1980-81 school year. 45 The 1980-1981 Chorus consisted of: 4th Row - Beth Davison. Several of the chorus members participated individually or in small groups for several clubs in our community. The big project for chorus this year was to put on a musical. Dames At Sea was chosen. Spirit Week consisted of Clash Day, Wear a Sign Day, Pioneer Day, Tip Your Hat Day, and traditional Gold and Black Day. Support of the activities was slow at first but picked up to a high on Thursday with a big car rally. Though shunned by the administration, the car rally seemed to be the highlight of Homecoming activities. Friday finally arrived and last minute preparations began. The theme for Homecoming, “Against the Wind” seemed to be how the day went for the sophomores as they rushed to have the gym decorated in time for the dance. The football team contributed to the Homecoming excitement by beating Humboldt's Cardinals 34-19. During halftime, last years queen, Barb Ullman and Mark Oestmann, filling in for last year's king, Randy Mason, crowned Su Ramsey and Curt Bartels as 1980 Homecoming Royalty. The dance went over as a huge success with “Chaser” providing great music, ending Homecoming week on a successful note. However, the trip encountered one casualty. While playing a game of preditor-prey, a tree collided with Julie. After a few seconds of chaos, it was determined that stitches may be needed. It was a chance for students to learn about our County Government and how it is run. Students were split into two parties, Federals and Anti-Federals. As the campaigning began, the juniors put up posters around the school, running for their choice of office. This year all the juniors attended and visited the court house and the respectable offices into which they were elected. There they received information and learned of the responsibilities of their respected office. At the beginning of the season not many people thought the Indians would do well and very few dreamed of a winning season. But the Tecumseh Indians proved to be the kind of team that everyone wants. After the season was over the Indians had compiled a 7-2 record, 7 players named to the All Conference team, and 3 players receiving All State Honorable Mention! The Indians first beat Wymore 7 to 6 and then downed Louisville 19 to 16. The Indians first loss was to Milford with a score of 7 to 13. Then the Indians would rattle off 5 wins in a row defeating Friend, 21-8; Humboldt, 34 to 19; Pawnee City, 28 to 8; Auburn, 28 to 15; Wilber, 38 to 19. Going into the final game the Indians needed a win to at least tie for the Conference champion. But victory was not to be, as Tecumseh lost to Tri County, 13 to 26. Some team statistics are: First Downs, Tecumseh 98 Opponent 78; Passes, Tecumseh 115 Opponent 87; Total yards, Tecumseh 2,366 Opponent 1,804; Punts blocked, Tecumseh 1 Opponent 3; Kickoffs; Tecumseh 37 Opponent 29; Fumbles lost; Tecumseh 11 Opponent 16. Head Coach Roger Hill said throughout the year that “This game is the most important. If we don’t win this one, it doesn’t matter if we win or lose the rest.’’ The Indians did play each game as the most important game and wound up with the impressive record of 7-2. Improvement was made during the year as it showed against Class C runnerup Meridian in districts, when Tecumseh was ahead by 10-2 in the second set. Many offenses were tried along in the season as to get some idea to what was going to happen in the upcoming year. Freshmen and Sophomores received very valuable playing experience on the varsity squad. There were rough games during the season that could have gone the other way. Christy Laue was voted to the second team East Division Southern Nebraska Conference. Kate Morrissey and Laurie Ramsey each received votes. The Freshmen and the Sophomores play the Johnson — Brock Freshman — Sophomore Tournament. In the tournament they played Johnson — Brock in the first round and defeated them — then, they played Humboldt receiving second place. There were seven sophomores and freshmen that played on the varsity squad. The coaches handed out 10 letters with 8 returning lettermen for next year’s squad. There were also 9 starting 4 or more games and 5 out of the regular starters returning. Back from the previous year they had 3 lettermen, John Baum, Darren Mattheis, and Scott Davis. These three runners were the leaders of a very young team. The year started by running on country roads to get into shape. They ran anywhere from 4 to 10 miles a practice. For some of the new runners this was quite an experience. Everyone tried hard, though, and much progress was made. One week before their first meet they started working out on the golf course. Here, much speed work was done. It was quite a bit different from the country roads. The first meet was at Tecumseh. It was the Tecumseh Invitational. The heat of the day caused many to do poorly. After the team failed to place here, the rest of the season improved. This year they had 11 meets. The first of which was at Geneva where they placed third. As for individual performance the team had 6 people run varsity throughout the year. Darren Mattheis, John Baum, Scott Davis, Brian Volkmer, Mike Mandary, and Dave Miesbach. At the District Meet the team was harrassed by injuries. One bright point was when Darren Mattheis earned the right to run at state. Once in Kearney he was very nervous and ready to run. At the end of the race he was in 16th place. His teammates, all very proud of him, were there at the finish to greet him. The outlook for next year is very good. The team will have everyone back to run. Hopefully, they will see a District Championship and a good showing at State. The 1980 Cross Country Team: front row: Darren Mattheis. The last three wins by the Indians were at districts, which were 3 wins that haven’t been won for 17 years. As they defeated Wymore in the finals 63 to 47, they took the trophy and the nets home as champions and one game away from the state playoffs. But State was not meant for the Indians this year as they fell short to Geneva at regionals 55 to 61 in a hard fought game. The Senior members that will be leaving the team are: Doug Goracke, Alan Wenzl, George Schmidt, Ron Fritsch, and Lloyd Laue. Tecumseh will still be strong next year because there will be four starters back and many other members who will help to be the back-bone of a successful 81-82 season. Doug Goracke who made all-conference 1st team and Ron Hackbart who made all-conference 2nd team were the high scorers for the team, but every point contributed by the other members helped put Tecumseh through a winning season. As the Indians entered the district tournament, they knew that they could win through teamwork and confidence and with excellent playing they proved they were 1. Best Shot Is Short The Tecumseh girls basketball team was again coached by Roger Hill. The team consisted of 2 seniors, 5 juniors, 4 sophomores, and 6 freshmen. The girls came out of volleyball season feeling pretty low and looking forward to a successful basketball season. This goal however was not reached as the girls ended their hard fought season with a 1-16 record. The team started out their season by playing two of the toughest teams in the Conference. The girls however did not “throw in the ole towel”; not to say that it wasn’t considered. With a 0-8 record they came back to once again beat the Johnson-Brock Eagles. The girls played well together that night and the win lifted their spirits. Continued on page 80. 79 Back Row (L to R) Teresa Bohling, Kate Morrissey. Jil Parrish. Other highlights of the season included Laue's photo-finish of 3rd in the 100 at districts and Morrissey’s near — school record time of 2:32.09 in the 800 at districts behind three of the states’ best. All eleven girls lettered and the coaches are looking for even better things for next year. 87 Oh Jill I didn’t know you ran on one leg! Wow. did you see those legs? Coaches H H take a breather. Finn Leads Young Golf Team The 1980-1981 Tecumseh golf team had 13 members out. Many people thought it would turn out to be an average year. But, the season turned out better than anticipated for Coach Larry Anderson. Mr. Anderson called it a “A building year.” It was a relatively young team even though there will be 4 returning lettermen, so it should be a much brighter season next Spring. Letter-winners were: Tom Finn, Mike Fox, Alan Lempka, Kelly Mitchell, and Jamie Thompson. There were three individual award winners. Tom Finn won the 7th place medal at the Palmyra Invitational, medaled in the Palmyra dual, and was named outstanding golfer. Alan Lempka medaled at the Palmyra dual, and Chuck Robertson medaled at the Wymore Southern dual. Boy, look at that ball fly! Dave keeps an eye on the ball. 89 Finn shows them how it’s done. Times and Faces Of Today In reality we were unable to be in all places at all times, but for the most part, we had moments that some members felt that they were getting close to becoming omnipresent. Throughout the 1980-81 year the entire staff was teaching, gestering and talking the written word through the gestalt learning theory, question and answer, pictorial, or show and tell method. There were workshops, parent teacher conferences, parent coffees, vocational meetings, state meetings, state teachers convention, school visitations, faculty meetings, board of education meetings and many more activities used for the purpose of a learning experience. Also, there were many contests sponsored by faculty and attended by student to allow for competition with fellow students. Hopefully, this type of activity helped to prepare them for graduation and promote a competitive attitude which will help them in the future. Hard at work-Mrs. Kroese? Are you making fun of my hat?
