Text from Pages 1 - 104 of the 1972 volume:

Time is not measured by the passing of years, But by what one does, What one feels, And what one achieves. In the pages of the 1972 Tomahawk are highlights of people and events that made Tecumseh High School history during the past year. Among the memorable are the sputnik games in the new Student Lounge, clean-up day, bus rides to the shop, and the 880 relay team’s perfect record. By what one did, what one felt, and what one achieved, the students of THS will forever remember the year 1972. This nostalgia has become the theme of our Tomahawk--the pictures taken from an annual of the twenties, the spreads for activities and classes that all students will look back to in all of these future years. These memories of time are: Book I - Classes- page 4 Book II - Organizations - page 28 Book III - Society- page 54 Book IV - Athletics- page 76 Photographer .........Staff ........Staff .........Staff .........Staff Sports Writer . . . Chess Club—'' Che Magic Of Che Mind” The Chess Club was newly organized in February of 1972 by its sponsor Charles Bachle. The purpose of the club was to teach the fundamentals of the game, to afford opportunities of playing the game, and to add to the students’ skill of the game. A tournament system was developed whereby a rating system was developed and each student challenged the one rated ahead of him. To progress forward, a challenger had to win two of three games. The top five places went to Scott McDowell, Hari Hamel, Jim Bates, Nick Boone, and Brad Meister. Above: The top chess players in THS, Scott McDowell took first place, Hari Hamel was second. ' ‘Cove Js Blue ’ ’ 63 One of this year’s most looked forward to activities was the opening of the student lounge. Hours of fun and relaxation oozed from behind the doors. A few students even found time to study in some remote corners of the room. The privilege was denied freshmen as they were getting into the swing of becoming upper class-men, as were some students because of their apparent lack of responsibility. The Prom proved to be another of buzzing activities for the juniors as they prepare for a night (and morning) of dancing and various other activities. Tom Hutt was awarded the most valuable annual staff member award. An award few people realize how much work goes into. 64 65 and the meaning of companionship. Mike Behrends. The beginning of the 1971 season found seven freshmen, 15 sophomores, 11 juniors, and nine seniors among the participants. Among the 42 team members were 12 returning letter -men. Tecumseh began the season with an 18-0 win over Nebraska City Lourdes in 108 degree heat. Tecumseh’s leading rusher was Dean Delong with 89 yards; Randy Field was second with 35 yards; followed by Ken Brinkman and Spence McPherrin with 23 and -2 yards respectively. The following Friday found the Indians on a misty Southeast Consolidated field. The offense and defense proved equally proficient in their tasks. The indians won 33-0. On their next outing they faced a second ranked Fall City Sacred Heart team. The unscored upon Irish maintained their record on a rainy night by constant blitzes. Tecumseh fell 26-0. The following game proved equally deflating as a sixth ranked Wymore Southern team again shutout Tecumseh, 22-0. Consecutive losses to Johnson-Brock and Humoldt, by scores of 22-12 and 12-7, respectively. Despite hard work the Indian’s errors occurred at unopportune moments allowing their opponents to get a brief upper hand which sustained them through the night. After four consecutive losses Tecumseh became a winner again by upsetting favored Pawnee City 14-12. Roger Morrissey provided the point margin but a stingy, hard-hitting defense proved to be the winning factor. Sterling also fell to Tecumseh by a score of 54-0. Varsity and alternate units proved equally effective against the Jets and both shared in the scoring. The eighth and final game of the season was to be played at home with one of Nebraska’s top class B teams, Auburn. Tecumseh managed to shut off their bread and butter plays but they resorted to a series of long passes, wide reverses and draw plays. The final score: Auburn 50, Tecumseh 0. 78 Hari Hamel reverses wide around right end with some assistance (?) from Bob Feurer against Johnson-Brock. 79 McDowell and Kerner put the stops to a J-B Eagle. Team action and Indian spirit couldn’t be beat. 86 87 Fred Seckman begins the first period against Humboldt. Tecumseh’s wrestling team finished their season with a 1-7-1 record. The win was posted over DeWitt Tri-County by a score of 36-19. The draw came with Southeast Consolidated, 30-30. The losses came from Syracuse (2), Humboldt (2), Auburn Reserves, Fall City and Southeast Consolidated. The unimpressive team record was due to the relative inexperience of the team. The only seniors were Mike Haney, Rich Wolken and Randy Colton. Rich and Randy were regular starters and Mike was when he managed to make weight. Randy Colton was probably the biggest crowd pleaser through the season. His speed and quickness enabled him to win several matches with only seconds remaining on the clock. Unfortunate losses in the district meet prevented Randy from competing in the state meet. Tecumseh was represented at the state meet by heavyweight Bob Feurer. Feurer, receiving second place in the district meet, won his first match against Folkers of Gothenberg, lost a second to Deane of Omaha Gross by an overtime, split referee’s decision. Bob won two more matches against Kozak of Lincoln Pius X and Buss of Cozad. Wrestling Deane in the consolation finals Feurer was decisioned ten to four and became Tecumseh’s first medalist in the state meet finishing the season with a 21-4 record. Individual dual records are as follows: Don Phillips, 3-4; Shane McCoy, 2-4; GaryLohmeier, 2-6; Jim Hunt, 1-6-1; Randy Colton, 4-3-1; Fred Seckman, 0-8; Rich Wolken, 4-4; Dave Lade, 3-5; Bob Feurer, 8-0; Cleve Thompson, 0-3; Dan Kerner, 0-4; Mike Haney, 0-4; Tony Davison, 0-3; Rhett Meints, 1-2; Leo Davison, 0-1; and Delton Neeman, 4-1. Jim Hunt shows his typical aggressiveness. Jim proved to be the hardest nosed first year man. Bob Feurer pins another opponent. Bob succeeded in pinning all of his dual match opponents through the year. 89 Tony Davison squeezes his opponent while trying for the pin. 90 Mike Haney receives correction from a Humboldt wrestler at the beginning of the second period. Randy Colton tries to step over his opponent from Syracuse. 91 Rich Wolken drives his opponents shoulders o the mat. crack 1972 SCORES OF MEETS: Tecumseh 76 Wymore 64 Tecumseh 34 Falls City 110 Tecumseh 28 Weeping Water 32 Auburn 105 A groan and a mighty throw Ken Brinkman hands off to Senior Phil McDowell in the 880 relay. 92 Morrissey and DeVorss show their skill 93 Time to plot strategy Back: K.
