We have strived to blueprint your school life, and between these covers are recorded your golden memories in a lasting and permanent structure of your great days atT.H.S. We are young and are learning to accept the responsibilities that are bestowed on us when we first open the doors at T.H.S. We realize that the activities we belong to throughout the school year bring us closer and closer to accept the responsibilities of adulthood. Contents Seniors..............................4 Undergrads .........................16 Organizations.......................28 Activities .........................48 Sports..............................66 Society.............................80 Faculty.............................92 3 Alan Pleratt Bob Halverstadt Jan Farley Memories are golden ... Life at Tecumseh High School was not composed only of studies and extracurricular activities; there were certain ingredients which can be defined only by a senior. As we look back, we remember our final year of our high school life-the time and effort spent on learning, the excited buzz of a basketball game, the ’’sneak trip, the time the teacher you couldn't stand wrote excellent across your composition. We were no longer followers, but leaders-the heads of organizations, the stars in sports, the best informed, the most mature, no more the underclassmen-the Seniors. We've come a long way from the first day of kindergarten when we learned to say our names, addresses, and telephone numbers. We have almost completed one cycle of education and life. With this we have learned responsibility and self-dependence. Our lives were molded by many hands-the hands of teachers, the hands of friends, the hands of parents. Upon graduation, we will all go our separate ways-some are college bound, others begin new jobs in new cities, still others perhaps begin families-but all go their separate ways. No matter what that choice is, the senior's future is a direct result of the days at THS and the knowledge gained there. Having always looked forward to being the seniors, the class of 1970 had its dream come true on the first day of the f69-'70 school year. Numerous class meetings were held and with the assistance of Mr. Blum-horst, Mr. Beck, and the class officers, many important decisions were made-the selection of announcements, caps and gowns, and the choice of the colors. The class of 1970 selected green and gold as their colors, and the white rose as their flower. Their class motto, In Youth We Learn, In Age We Understand, exemplifies the completion of one cycle of education and life. The ultimate goal for which they were working was the sneak trip to the Lake of the Ozarks. In order to take this trip, approximately two thousand dollars was needed. This was raised by magazine sales, which raised more money than any year previous, class dues, a soup supper and the Senior Class Play. It was a lot of hard work but worth it when the ultimate goal was reached. Four years of high school life ended as forty-three seniors were awarded their diplomas. The class of 1970 was the first class to complete four years of high school and graduate from the new THS building. At 12:20, a little behind schedule, 39 seniors pulled out of the school parking lot on their way to the long awaited sneak trip in the Lake of the Ozarks. Arriving early to Kalfran Lodge, they toured Bagnell Dam. During the three day vacation the seniors enjoyed such activities as swimming, boating, touring the caverns, dances, hot dog roasts, the Ozark Opry, a show boat ride on the Larry Don , shopping in Dogpatch, and water balloon fights. The seniors were put on probation by Kalfran authorities even before they arrived at the lodge, but as they left, Dick, the manager, seemed disappointed that Tecumseh was leaving. A memorable time was enjoyed by everyone and we hope that the pictures on these pages will bring to mind some special memories to each of the seniors who took the trip. 12 Seniors invade Kalfran Senior Class Of 1970 Valedictorian Alan Pieratt Salutatorian Billine Seckman In Youth We Learn In Age We Understand. 14 No Man is an Island” sung by C. City. 33 Y-Teens Strive To Make A Better World To build a fellowship of women and girls devoted to the task of realizing in our common life those ideals of personal and social living to which we are committed by our faith as Christians. These things Tecumseh Y-Teens strived to do throughout this year. They helped with Homecoming, The Salvation Army Drive, a pre-school Christmas party, and they hid, and sacked Easter Eggs for the Easter Egg Hunt. A slumber-party was held in the high school gym. It could have been called a sleepless party for no one got much sleep. The year was brought to a close with the Y-Teen Banquet with the theme, Who Cares, We Care. The speaker was Mr. Ronald Sohl, of Beatrice, who gave an interesting speech on the theme. The Y-Teens have had an enjoyable year, despite all the problems they may have encountered along the way. Various projects which they sponsored were: assigning the dates on which a class or club would be in charge of the concessions stands at games, the Homecoming Dance, lyceums, and convocations. Officers were: President-S ally Blessing, Vice-President- Gary Parrish, Secretary- Jane Leuenberger, Treasurer - Bob Hothan. 39 1969-1970 Annual Staff A busy year was the outlook for the Co-Editors of the annual. Diane Pella and Dave Blessing had a year of planning and scheduling before them. It was up to them to see that the annual pages were done on time and pictures were taken. Those in charge of photography for the yearbook were Dave Meister, Dave Blessing, Bill Behrends, Tony Davis, and Dan Piersol. These boys were busy throughout the year taking pictures of classes, organizations, and activities. The Business Management group was in charge of selling annuals to the student body and teachers. Two hundred copies was the set goal. Counting the number of annuals sold are Kathy McAlexander, Pat Schultz, Steph Pella, Dave Meister, Linda Beck, and Greg McAlexander. The Year OJ The Warpath In order to have a good annual the copy must be perfect. This was the purpose of the copy department. Kim McCulla, Marlene Walters, Debbie Hazen, Charlene Walters, and Jean Gieser were always around to check and recheck this part of the annual. The Lay-Out group was in charge of arranging the pictures on the annual pages. Included in this group are Kim McCulla, Debbie Hazen, Steph Pella, Jean Gieser, and Ann Bray. Barb Knippelmeyer, Ann Bray, Bill Campbell, and Suzanne Pope were in charge of the annual cover, art, and division pages. They had to decide which colors to use and what emblem was going to be used in the annual. Stewart Music Department This was a busy year for the vocal music department and its small groups. They sang at all our holiday convocations, including Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. Almost the entire second semester was devoted to preparation for the District Music Contest held in Nebraska City on April 23rd and 24th. A pre-contest concert was given in the gym the week before, and parents were invited to attend. All the small groups took part in the contest and really came out on top, with Madrigal receiving a 1, both Boys Octet and Quartet a 1, and Triple Trio, Trio, Girls Sextet, and Mixed Octet 2s. Everybody worked hard. Another highlight for the small groups was that they got to sing one night for the Mrs. Jay-cees. Some of the groups were chosen to sing for graduation exercises in May. All the groups really appreciated our accompanists who gave up their time, too. 60 Trio: D. Pella, B. Brown, S. Blessing Triple Trio: D. Hazen, R. Jones, P. Lade, A. Thompson, K. McCulla, J. Southeast Border Champs 70 Basketball “69”-“70” Tecumseh experienced a good season this year in basketball. Although the Indians were the shorter team in every game played, we still managed to win 16 and drop only 7. The highlight of the season, which included 3 tournament trophies, was the upset win over Sterling on their home court. For despite all the skits and the pep rally that were held the traditional homecoming rain continued to fall. By game time the center of the playing field had become a sea of mud and water. This could not stop T-Town's eleven indomitable mudmen as they waded to an eight to nothing victory over the Johnson Brock Eagles. Pat Mahoney and Gary Parrish (pictured on the opposite page) reigned as King and Queen of the Homecoming festivities. While alumni and students of THS danced to the music of the Midwest Sound. The line-up of smiles proves that a touch of wet won't hurt our hardy crew (especially when there's any fun involved !). Giving up their 1969 crowns, King Dan Davison and Queen Beth Dilla-plain were pleased to make a magic moment come true for the new Sweetheart King, Bob Halverstadt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Halverstadt, and Queen Ann Bray, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Bray. The first runners-up were Bill Campbell and Ann TenHulzen; second run- ners-up, Gary Wall and Diane Pella; third runners-up Jim Hutt and Pat Schultz; and fourth runners-up Lyell Chittenden and Wendee Ford. Our Superintendent I hope the year has found the students gaining wisdom and stature in their goal to becoming better citizens. Board Of Education President of School Board, Dr. Keith Shuey. Our Guidance Counselor Another busy year is history. The area of financial aid has been on a par with the past efforts. Some members of the community are beginning to look to the counseling office as a resource of reformation and assistance, and that is certainly a step in the direction for which it was created. How successful our program is has to be measured in terms of the achievements of our students; particularly those in post-high school education. Mr. Hal Brown 1 Mr. Virgil Blumhorst Our Principal Today education is becoming more and more important. It is a privilege rather than a right to obtain twelve years of learning. Too many times we lose sight of this. More and more needs to be learned in less and less time. Time for repetition or going slow is no longer possible. Everyone, students, parents, faculty, administration, Board of Education and the community must realize that education is everyone's responsibility to work for the school's goal.
