1953 S Published by JOURNALISM STUDENTS SPEARFISH JUNIOR-SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL Spearfish, South Dakota Volume XV Editor Catherine Repass Associate Editor.........Edice Blue Adviser Mrs. Hanson foreword Typical of the progress made in Spearfish and its school system are the two pictures shown above. The top picture shows the new modern structure used by the grades for the first time this year. The lower picture shows the little red schoolhouse which holds many memories for most of the students now attending Spearfish Junior-Senior High School. Typical of the progress of each school year its its yearbook. The builders of this yearbook have strived to blueprint your school life as you live it day to day. Here, recorded in a lasting and permanent structure you can forever enjoy your memories of your never-to-be-forgotten school career. freclication Dear Mr. Mitchell, ■As we recall our high school career there is a man who stands out again and again in our memories. Do you remember, Mitch, speaking at our Junior Banquet and Prom and at the many pep meetings? Besides coaching the team you did a wonderful job of boosting the morale of the student body in that big, quiet way of yours. We can remember the way you teased the cheerleaders and your jokes on the boys during football, basketball, and track trips. They weren’t easy, those problems in Advanced Math and the theorems in Solid Geometry, but with your experienced assistance and patience we really learned a lot. With all these memories in mind, and with remembrance of your friendship and help during our high school years, we dedicate our 1953 SPARTAN to you, Coach Bill Mitchell, with deepest respect and admiration. Although there is no species distinction among human beings, there are marked differences in each person's interests and talents. These traits, developed for careers by our public school system, tend to bring together students interested in the same subjects. These people, our classmates, fill a dear page in our memory book of thoughts. Our memories will include the shop, in which many worth-while hours are spent, and the excitement of registering for classes in late August. With effort and skill one can land a fish successfully; so in life with ambition and interest in extra-curricular affairs of the school, one can be successful too. To “land” firm friends, wonderful experiences, and beautiful memories a student has only to show active interest in a few clubs or activities offered in Spear fish High School. These next few pages are designed to show the varied activities and services performed by these groups. “Fish” in the net below are: the queen's float sponsored by the Board of Advisers, the pep band, “Spike Nelson and his Wacky Wacketeers” a skit sponsored by the IRC, and a scene from the rush of publishing the LOOKOUT, school paper. c A JBcincl Concerts, Music Festivals and Band Clinics are some of the numerous appearances made by the SHS A Band. Selections are made from the 59 members of A Band to participate in Pep Band activities which include basketball and football games.
