They wanted their complete extra hour for lunch, so they took it at the lake playing frisbee. When they stroll- ed into class fifteen minutes late, Mr. Blue said they could have thirty minutes more (detention). Members of the “Lake Patrol” are: Kelli Essary, Julie Koutahi, Gail Sams, Ruth Kingham, Diane Cunn- ingham, Wayne Folks, Dawn Poe, Huey Brown, Sean Bell and John Bernal. Breakfast Club We’re one big happy family 4 Opening Just hangin' around. (Spanish Gub) Cruisin’ th« drive PaM wt tfyte44 ut4 As I walk in the halls, they are almost empty. People occupying the rooms are silent as the teachers take roll. Glancing out the window, I see the beautiful fall colors; red, orange, brown, auburn, and rust. Colorful leaves are blowing across the dying grass. The wind is gently blowing the dying leaves from the trees. The trees are rapidly becoming bare. Trees, flowers, grass; almost everything is dying. Soon snow will cover the ground. The colors will all be gone and everything will be white. Turning away from the window, and wishing fall would last longer: it begins to snow. Written by — Katy Wohnoutka 6 Fall The Band jazzes up the pep assembly! The BLUES BROTHERS: David Flowers, Raymond Montgomery, Mickey Ware, Ricky Crisp, Tony Fullbright. Denea’s was the scariest costume, Karen’s the most original. Most likely to attract was Diane Cun- ningham with her per- sonalized Madonna costume. It must have worked because she at- tracted Punk Dracula, Wayne Folks. Each of these were awarded a prize for their costumes. The people are what make the sport. Although others may not realize it the athlete gives up a lot to play and they get more than just the thrill of winning and knowing they are 1 in return. The person who has the guts, the stamina, and the inner strength to endure after school practice and long hours in the gym or on the field get a lot back — friendships with teammates, thoughts of the game they won at the last second, and memories to cheerish long after the pic- tures are faded and the trophies are tarnished. Football 11 SAVAGES SHOW OFF The Savages had a rough 4-6 season this year and THS students were proud of the team and the effort they put out. They worked hard and had some fun, too. Here’s the 1985-86 Tecumseh Savages in action. The Freshmen had a 2-6 season and we wish them luck as the future Savages. A week of spirited activities was kicked off Monday, which was designated Hippie Day in conjuction with the BACK TO THE FUTURE theme from the popular summer movie. The five dollar prize for best hippie was given to Ramona Greeling. Tuesday was Independence Day when Sam Nye and Julie Shankle won. Sherri Varner, Greg Wilson, Carol Swift, Sam Nye, and Julie Shankle were real groovey for 60’s Day Day with Eric Casey ners. Savage Pride Day was Friday and everyone wore Black and Gold. Friday the Homecoming pep assembly took us BACK TO THE FUTURE with Gena Rutherford, Marlene Wise, and Angie House giving their rendition of “Leader of the Pack” a song from the 50’s. Trey Williams, Wade McKnight, Keith Chlouber, and Ronnie Little Axe perform- ed “I Wanna Hold your Hand” without losing their cool — just their shirts. Roni Thompson, Richard Oliver, Carol Swift, Julie Shankle, Anita Brown, Josh Inda and Juan San- chez were “Staying Alive. The cheerleadres danced to Back in Time, the theme from the movie BACK TO THE FUTURE. The next Homecoming activity was the parade. The Savage Pride Band lead it off. The freshmen and High School cheerleders were also there. The 1984 Homeocm- ing Queen, Kara Myers, and the '85 candidates made their appearance. And of course, the class floats. The Senior float was a rainbow leading to the future. The Juniors chug- ged through on the Savage Express. The Sophomores demonstrated change by an abacus leading to a computer. The Freshmen built a representation of time travel through a juke box and a ghetto blaster. The Seniors won the float competition, concluding the 1985 Homecoming Parade. Later, the Tecumseh Savages would go on to win the Homecoming game against the Mcloud Redskins 28-0. The first points came after a punt blocked by Junior, Richard Oliver that helped Ronnie Little Axe score from four yards out. Pat Straughan passed to Oliver for another touchdown. The final points of the game came when Sophomore Kenneth Jacobs scored from five yards out. Held in the multi-purpose room, there were the guest talents of James Williams, a Beta alumnist, and the spectacular Class Act 86, this year’s show choir. James was also the announcer. There was quite a variety of acts from THS. Jimmy Smith, Lori Binau, Melinda Withrow, and Angel Sparks sang solo selections from pop and religion; Gail Sams did a comedy routine, Christy Bernard did a jazz dance routine, and Shannon O’Shell did a piano number and singing routine. Angel Sparks took first, Shannon O’Shell got second and Jimmy Smith and Gail Sams tied for third. There were two band entries: Extyce, which is Shane Davis, Jonathan Kolarik, and Dee Hodges: and another band (which took first in the group entry), the members of which were Huey Brown, Chris Gregg, Sam Fellows, John Humphrey, and Steven Floyd. This year, the convention was held in the spacious Holiday Inn on 1-40 and Meridian. Before going to the hotel, we had a wonderful Mexican lunch at Chi-Chi’s which lightened our pockets. The nada-coladas and such were terrific. After we got to the hotel and checked in. Betas swam in the pool and lounged in-the hot-tubs in the Holidome before the banquet began. An hour before the banquet, most Betas were drss- ing up in style, but some of the guys got in a last round of minature golf. After the delicious banquet of steak, baked potatoes, green beans, chocolate cake, and something on a toothpick we couldn t figure out, we listened to last year’s president give a speech. When we were finally released, we had an hour to get ready for the dance, which lasted until midnight. The Seniors (and a few adventurous Juniors and Sophomores) brought back the mood of the 60’s with an old-fashioned TOGA party. We wore our togas to the dance, where the KOFM DJ played the song from the Animal House toga party. The next day, we went to see Pete Collins in the Aloha room at the hotel. He gave a thought-provoking speech entitl- ed: So You Think You re Going to Live Forever.” After all that excitement, you'd think we were ready to go home, but we had the talent show to watch. After the dinner, KJ 103 entertained everyone as they danced the night away. But even though the banquet and prom were a success there was a lot of controversey between the juniors and the SENIORS on the set dress code at the banquet and prom, that is no one was to leave the prom to change into casual clothes like they have done in the past. It turn- ed into the DRESS CODE WAR. And the prom was an all- formal prom. The said reason for the new dress code was to pre- vent the usage of alcohol and the students leaving the banquet and not returning. Also there were many quarrels and bitterness over the result of the dress code war. The prom had it’s advan- tages and disadvantages of being a Formal” prom. A few of the advantages was that everyone looked nice and it was a more upper-class prom. But now for the disadvantages. During the din- ner banquet it was nice that everyone wore their tuxs and for- mals but then came the prom and the dancing. A lot of the students were afraid to really get out there and jam because they were afraid they would ruin their dresses and suits. Also you can imagine 50 to 100 hoop dresses all dancing side by side like a herd of cattle. But with the people that did show up, that is stayed for the prom, had a real good time. We’re really having tun now. 112 Freshmen Freshmen football players think it’s easier to be a girl. While freshmen cheerleaders are cheering them on. Janet Tate, who was our secretary at THS for two years, left us this year due to a move to Tulsa. Mrs. Tate was our bookkeeper, keeping track of club funds quickly and efficiently. Before that, she worked for several years as secretary to the Superintendent. She left that job to work in real estate, and left that in turn to work in the office at THS. The teachers wished her luck and said goodbye at a salad luncheon. She will be sorely missed. Brave Teacher Kathy Wolf, THS Spanish teacher, has had to live through a trial most of us would not have re- mained so calm through. Mrs. Wolf has shown ex- tremes of courage and patience during the after- math of the devestating earthquakes which rocked Mexico City this year. Her foster daughter and family, residents of the city, had not been seen or heard from since the quake. Mrs. Wolf had made many attempts to contact the family in the weeks which followed after the disaster by telegrams, telephone. State Department sources, and the Red Cross. None gave her any news of her foster daughter and family. Finally her family was contacted by a ham radio operator, and it was discovered that the daughter, Eva, son-in-law, and two grand- children were alive. This information came from one of the many hospitals seen on television in the news broadcasts. Three cheers for Kathy Wolf. She showed great courage during this time of trial, and a lot of patience and courage — and calmness — during a hard experience. Would most of us have remained so calm? I doubt it. 124 Faculty Tecumseh School Board 85-86 Jim Meyers Mr. C. Shields Superintendent Asst. Best wishes to you. We love you. Dad Mom Larry Scott What a Great Year It’s Been! 1986 was a good year for Carol Gokey after obtain- ing the crown of Frontier Day’s Queen. She also applied and won a place on “Truth and Peace,” a large Christian choir. During the 1985-86 school year, Carol won a place in the Oklahoma Honor Choir and won first place at a Vo-Tech talent contest. From there she represented Vo-Tech at a state contest in Oklahoma City. Her plans for the future are attending Hillsdale College in Moore and becoming an accountant. Carol has done a wonder- ful job with her singing and has won singing scholarships to various colleges. A Year of Accomplishment! Lori has many accomplishments with FFA. At the County Fair, she won the Overall Sheep Showmanship and Breed Champion Ewe out of the whole show. She also had overall Showman at the Local Livestock Show. Lori was a delegate to represent her chapter at the State FFA convention. Recently, she received the State Farmer Degree. She was Richards Award winner and was chosen to give a nominating speech for a candidate for a State FFA office. Headed for the Big Times! Melissa Hembree has had a good start in the singing business. As many of us know because of the All-Sports Banquet, she is doing a great job. Melissa has made records and has also sang with popular stars during her career. Keep up the good work, Melissa! 140 Politics, and T.H.S. The 4 days as pages in the capitol was an unforget- table, exciting opportunity. Terry Ballard and Chase Rutledge were invited by Steve Lewis. They worked in the capitol from 9:30 each morning to sometimes 7:00 pm that evening. They had the chance to be where the laws are passed. They witnessed the voting on many bills. They were asked to run many errands, and rarely had time for breaks. They made many new friends from all over the state and hope to have this opportunity again in the future. Pictured at the left are pages — Chase Rutledge and Terry Ball with our District Representative Steve Lewis. Chapter FFA Sweetheart Holly Amerson has been an active part of the FFA Chapter throughout her high school years. This year she has been recognized as the 1985-86 FFA Chapter Sweetheart. Holly is also this year's senior class reporter. Throughout her high school years Holly has often been recognized for her accomplishments. She has earned three out of four scholarship pins and has main- tained a good grade point average. Ofter being recogniz- ed as Chapter Sweetheart Holly was allowed to par- ticipate in further contests. Congratulations Holly! 141 State Wrestling Qualifier After years of hard work and dedication, Senior Steve Thoendel made it to the state finals this year. Although he didn’t place, he was chosen as one of the eight 141 pounders to go to state. Steve has been an outstan- ding wrestler from the start and has made the THS Wrestling staff and student body proud. Steve Thoendel The winners were — Eric Casey, Sean Bell, Stephen Floyd. The contest was based on an essay and personal ap- plication. The choosing of the winners had to do with leadership in the community and school, they were sent for four days to Valley Forge, Pennsylvania by the American Legion. National 4-H Conference The National 4-H Conference is a premiere event for the 4-H program on the national level. Senior, Jonathan Kolarik was chosen as one of the six 4-H members from Oklahoma participating in this event. April 11-18 at the National 4-H center, in Washington D.C., Jonathan became part of America’s “Think Tank’’ and helped make many decisions. After going through extensive selection processes, Jonathan was picked out of the 130,000 4-H members from Oklahoma. Congratulations Jonathan. Pictured at right — Jonathan Kolarik. 142 Shannon Bland, a junior, was very busy this year of 85-86. She was the 4H County President, won the State 4H project in General Photography (which entailed a trip to Chicago), was the top horticulturalist at the County Fair, had the most entries in the fair, won the 4H Foundation Speech Championship, Junior Amateur photography at Seminole Jr. College and was in the 4H Key Club (top 1% of 4Hers). Gene Mason, Senior, had some pretty interesting achievements his senior year. He won the FFA Speech contest, 4H Reserved Grand Champion (sheep), Pott County Grand Champion, and local Grand Champion. He was President of FFA, Chaplin of 4H, and County 4H Secretary and Treasurer. Gail Sams, Senior, has had some impressive achievements this year. Gail an- nounced the Savage Report on KGFF in Shawnee at 7:45 on Tuesdays with fellow senior Sean Bell. The Savage Report covered upcoming events and hap- penings at THS. Gail will do the Savage Report until graduation this year. She and Sean were chosen by Dennis Ladd (disc jockey at KGFF) to receive appren- ticeship training as part-time disc jockeys. Julie Shankle, senior, did the club activities organizations column for the Countywide Newspaper this year, which dealt with current happenings and things which had happened in the clubs at THS. She was the Clubs Editor on the THS Smoke Signal staff. Jay Malone started at the age of three — a senior now, he has turned pro at 17 years old. His titles include: 1983 GNC Regional Champ, 1984 ranked 14th in the nation in the 125cc class, and 1984 Oklahoma State Champ in the 250cc class, and 17th in the nation in the 250cc class in 1984. His choice of motorcy- cle is a Yamaha. 143 the beauty of death the soft, white snow fell I could feel the cold creep in the warmth creep out for what I had done I would burn in Hell there is beauty in death where I do not know 1 lay and suffer here It was my fault 1 took my last breath the snow was virgin white my car slid sideways my eighteen years pass by finally 1 lost my sight I hurt my parents and a friend the service was full of tears the faces passed by slowly I saw her face and heard her say, “This is not the end.” the beauty of death is not strife what has happened can not change by my death someone is better today I now know the beauty of death is a very new life. Todd Ferguson 1968-1986 This school year of 85-86 was a year of changes. We gained a new band director, Mr.-Gregory, and three new coaches, Mr. Lewis, Mr. Cheek, and Mr. Elkouri. These were happy changes, bringing new blood to the THS faculty lineup. But there wre sad changes as well. Mr. Whittington, who has taught various classes over his twenty years at THS and Tecumseh, retired this year on December 20th. Mr. Whittington graduated from OBU in 1965, and was basketball coach for nine years, the football coach for six years, and the track cpach for two years. He even had two years where his basketball team went to state. He most recently taught Oklahoma History and Democracy at THS. Most students graduating this year and next year had Mr. Whittington as their Oklahoma History teacher and recall him fondly as the “guy who tapped his watch and rattled his keys while we were taking a test.” He retired this year due to his doctor’s orders to quit. His doctor had recommended he retire before, but recently became vehement. Mr. Whittington has a rare form of arthritis called anklylosig spondilitis, which necessitates many visits to the doctor. Mr. Whittington will be missed by students and faculty alike. He was well respected and many students, in- cluding myself, would not have learned nearly as much about Oklahoma History if he had not been teacher. We’ll miss him. 144
