Football team. When the football was kicked for the first time the action was underway. Though the record was a disappointing two win eight loss season, the Savages battered two notorious rivals, Wewoka and Sulphur. Sports X 1 7 The Savage Defense swarms Lindsay. Russell Roundtree defense and one member from our offense as All-District players. Chuck Sims made All-District Cornerback and Russell Roundtree was named Defensive Back of the Year while Grant Southwell took All-District Offensive Guard. 18 X Sports An outstanding defense backed the Savage varsity offense. With Just a Little Imagination The Freshman Football Team exhibited talent and exciting plays were made, and the season was brought potential, Though the record was one and seven, some to a victorious close by the shut out of Mcloud. The fifteen member band still did an outstanding job at contest and on the marching field. The band upheld the traditional Band Queen Corona- tion, also. Spirit Club . . . Lets Their Spirit Soar The Spirit Club increased to 47 members. They elected the 1st male president Robert Klaus. The club held 2 dances and sold ribbons, hats, and Savage stickers. The Savage Spirit Club raised attendance at ball games by making them fun and exciting. Many peo- ple who were not members of the club were considered a part of this year's activities. FTA lent a helping hand to the teachers during Open House and obtained valuable experience by teaching Kindergarteners at Barnard every Friday. Beta showed their spirit by sponsoring two Blood Mobiles, a Clean-athon for the Arthritis Foundation, and their annual Salad Luncheon for the teachers. Organizations X 25 Old and ew History classes got off to a flying start this year as Mr. Walck's class learned more about nuclear war by watching The Day After in class. Coached by Roy Capps and Brad Walck, the Savages season ended with a record of 10-10. The men showed great talent and ability. They worked as a team making Savage Spirit come alive. Once again Savages took first in the Pott. County Tournament. They played Maud, Asher, and Dale and beat all of them by at least twenty points. This spark lit a flame among the fan's spirit that turned into a blaze as the girls took victory after victory. The varsity girls worked hard as a team, pulled together by their new coaches, Brad Walck assisted by Kaye Sharpe. With this team spirit they succeeded in taking second in the Bison Invitational Tournament, third in the Pott. County Tournament, and first in District. During this season the Lady savages won more games than they had in the past three years combined, ending the season with a record of 14 and 10. The bright spot was edging out Bethel to win the Tecumseh Tournament. We also beat Lexington for our only dual victory. Organizations f 67 Spring in Perspective The organizations at THS had fun throughout the year, but spring opened the door for many more. The choirs wrapped up the year with contests and the trip to the Bahamas. Spirit Club recruited new members and chose new cheerleaders. Newspaper worked hard on the graduation issue of the Spectrum. Mu Alpha Theta held regular meetings on Fridays. Indeed spring was a busy, but fun and enjoyable time of the year. The Band went to St. Louis, Missouri to compete in a Band contest. They received a superior rating. They visited many sites while they were there. The computer club had a com- puter day at the cafeteria, They have also held many meetings this year. The Beta club had their yearly State convention in Oklahoma City and won first place in talent. The National Beta convention will take place in Nashville, Tennessee, sometime in June. V The band plays their hearts out during competition at St. Louis. Savages Win District The 1984 Savage Baseball team started off an exciting season by winning seven straight games. Coaches Mike Robinson, Joe Johnson, and Emmitt Canfield worked with their team and kept spirit soaring. Runs Away With A Good Year The 1984 track team showed greater interest and participation than in past years. The boys team brought home several medals and competed in a variety of events from high jump to hurdles. The girls team was larger than it has ever been with 13 members. All that participated won at least one medal in a range of events from shot put to relays. Kris Nunley won third in the regional track meet at Pauls Valley in her 2- mile relay. She went on to state to finish eleventh. Although no one else went to state, the whole team had a great time this season, none of it being possible without the dedicated coaching of J.R. The problem was that it just wouldn't float, although the Juniors did spent a lot of hours and effort on it. The theme of the Junior's float was SPIRIT ON THE LOOSE. This year they hired Jim Meyers to replace Alva Melot, who retired as superintendent. As well as making decisions about the budget cuts they requested that a tax be put on ballot for the building of a new multipurpose center to replace the old auditorium. The voters passed the bill.
