The 1974 SAVAGE Tecumseh High School Tecumseh, Oklahoma Volume 59 It was summer, playing in the sun, camping in the wilderness. We escaped the humdrum of the educational process into our own worlds of en- joyment. Then it was school again. Minds in motion. Lively colors of summer faded into rich hues of autumn. Falling back into school routine.. foot- ball on chilly nights; thrilling basketball finishes; sweating, exhausted wrestlers; breathless track- sters; hammering baseballers. The entertaining drama plays; sweet music of voacl groups; pounding of typewriters; impossible math problems; sickening science smells; endless livestock shows. There was something for all seasons: something for each student. With so much to do and feel, all we had to do was gather it up and share our- selves with others. 2 4 We took a trip everyday, not an airplane ride, but one around the school. We noticed teachers, students, desks— But when we truly opened our eyes We became aware of people's voices, laughter and faces filled with expression. 7 11 Nineteen seventy-four Is the year of frustration. The Watergate mess Leaves us drained. Nixon challenges the News Media on fairness. Agnew resigns under Fire. Oklahoma officials Charged with wrongdoing. Fifty-cent gasoline, Pep Club problems, Kazan s sniffing visit To the campus. Inflation Is at its peak. The world rushes on In motion . . . 13 Each of us chose our own paths to follow for this year, athletics, skills, politics, clubs, or a combination of many desires and interests. We have spent our time through these experiences by hurrying--being IN MOTION, communicating ourselves and our emotions to others, which in turn helps us to grow and expand our whole beings. ADVISORS Barry Busch and Frank Talley, above, huddle over a yearbook production problem. The recipe for this year s yearbook is simple: take two athletic editors, two busy business managers, an advisor clicking photos everywhere, beat in eleven other staffers of various sizes and shapes. Blend one pack of enthusiasm, six ancient typewriters to a dash of frayed nerves--add a heaping cupful of students, mix well, pour conglomeration into Room 17 for nine months--voila' The Savage Staff 74. After several consecutive years of no award or recognition, chapter members wonder where the work is leading them. But special honors are not the most important thing -- satisfaction and accomplishment are! 21 c H E E R L E A D E R S We tried our best to show our spirit to the school. Funny little grins popped as we cheered before the crowd. Boppers like us must have a starting point somewhere— we hope the school appreciated our trying and will give most of us an E for effort. We prepared as a group to encourage support, summer clinic, spirit sticks, flips, jumps, chants, chuckles when we did Two bits— openly expressing feelings and emotions to the spectators is the definition of a cheerleader. The savage head that represents our school has borne the proud name of the Tecumseh Savages. This year, the Redman was not forgotten. The impressible fortitude of this proud people was honored at our football coronation. The Tecumseh High School band formed the traditional T and the Pep Club added to the festivities. The most important and exciting part, besides crowning of the queen, was the Indian dancers. We as students would like to thank the American Indians, for without them, we wouldn't have the name Savage . Last years reigning queen, Kim Yones, and captain Gary Smith. Coach Bob Avery's players were not blessed with any one outstanding individual. But they were a unified group of young men who realized the importance of teamwork and sacrifice. Harlin gained many honors for THS, being named outstanding wrestler at the Diamond Four tournament and Wrestler of the Year in the Mid-Western Conference. At the state meet, Harlin wrestled the eventual state champion and barely lost, 10-8. He never recovered from a bout with influenza, which might have cost him the state title. Seminole won the finals, however, 4-0. The Savages tied for second place with Noble s Bears in the Diamond Four Conference race. Tecumseh beat Byng 2-1, and that team went to state semi-finals. In the Okemah Tournament, Tecumseh led most of the way but finally lost 9-5. Okemah advanced to the state finals. 80 Coach Hal Honeycutt reflects before season opener. Coach Honeycutt discusses strategy with his team prior to players taking to field. Batter up as soon as snow left the ground. Workouts were hard like in any other sport, but the work turned into experience and experience into victory. Under our billed caps were the hidden smiles when that last second bunt paid off, or we per- formed a magnificent double play. After such moments we couldn't help but wonder if our caps would be too small after a hard won victory. Third baseman Joe Cole handles sharply hit ball as Shortstop Tommy Wilsie backs him up. They participated in the McAlester Invitational. The team made a good show- ing in the 5-Star Conference, and in the Diamond Four Conference they tied for third-place. In the latter conference, they won first-place in the 100- yard dash, second in the 220-yard run, third in the 440-yard relay, and fourth in the mile relay. But the team never gave up, always training to improve skills. ADMINISTRATION ALVA MELOT PRINCIPALS The main topic in this world today is a struggle for a better education. With man's curiosity and desire to learn, knowledge is becoming more important each day. He has the responsibility to make this world a greater place to live with each inch of progress. The dedicated members of the Tecumseh Board of Education, the superintendent, and the principals, were faced with many of these responsibilities. Their main interest: the students of today who must be properly prepared to meet the world tomorrow with a competent mind. The duty of the Administration was to make sure pupils got the strong foundation they must have --for the future. 124 CARL BARKER High School LEO MOTLEY Junior High School FACULTY To Learn is an Honor, And to Teach, Honorable Robert Avery, Algebra 1, Coach; Mrs. Dorothy Barthel, Typing, Short- hand; Mrs. Dorothye Boyd, Geography. Since he became superintendent of schools in 1967, his long-range visions of needs for local schools has resulted in dynamic buidling programs to meet these needs. With the unprecedented population growth of the Tecumseh School District in the early 70's, his plan- ning for the future has not been too soon. On behalf of many teachers and thousands of students who have attended Tecumseh schools the past 30 years, the 1974 SAVAGE is proudly dedicated to Mr. Alva Melot--educator. 128
