1973 SAVAGE TECUMSEH HIGH SCHOOL 315 PARK STREET TECUMSEH, OKLAHOMA UNITED STATES NORTHERN HEMISPHERE PLANET EARTH THE SOLAR SYSTEM THE MILKY WAY GALAXY THE UNIVERSE Countless people fill a hall Frenzied students whoop and call Obvious moves made with sly grace In vain attempt to turn a face. Lost assignments; missing books Accusing peers of being crooks Exciting tales from the night before Sound better still behind classroom doors. Those smashing days of high elation An elusive thing, this education. We let the small things rule our life It's too late when we see. You can't come back here ever again But there is always memory. Debbie Bentley 2 4 5 Oh, the pain of daily lectures Sometimes they get me down. Come walk-in feeling chipper — Then get zapped to the ground. The faces all around me Look peaceful in repose, Now, the reason WHY they're sleeping I don't care to even suppose. But somehow still, I like it And would never consider a trade For that inexplicable feeling Of knowing you've made the grade. D. Bentley 6 7 ra We surge in Some new clothes maybe A new grin. We see old friends, we see new, Hey look, a new girl Hey, have you seen the new boy Some new teachers, some old Has summer really gone Has anything really changed. We settle down, school work starts Some of us apply, some deny. Its hard to concentrate all day What with sports, pep club, Saturday night, old friends passing by We try, we pass, we fail. For some education is a job, For others just so-so And others a kind of jail... 12 ... And yet the process goes on the books, the problems, and associated things. Some good times, some bad, a quick smoke before the bell rings. We learn, at least most of us do, And the trouble, usually only by a few. So now we question, has the time been well spent. This thing, this diploma for which we've been sent. For us all, has school been worth the blood, sweat, and tears. Is society ready for us, can we fit, what about our fears Must we face the future alone. - Jim Myers 13 iyu yu HU1LJJI oc Doyle Motley Joleen Linduff Mrs. Janet Hudson Barry Busch Toni Teafatiller Linda Cox Craig Harlin David Dyke Debbie Rider Marla Grove Jimmy Wilsie Mike Kochick Fred Akin Mary Copeland Lisa Roberts Brenda Isaacs The SAVAGE STAFF was very busy this year planning for a distinctive- ly different yearbook. Our main goal was to capture the mood and events of 1972-73 in pictures. Barry, our American Yearbook Rep- resentative, presented a workshop then continued to help us through- out the year. Then our work began--taking pictures, waiting for pictures, and trying to be creative in planning the yearbook. The work was frequently interrupted by Pizza Parties, but we deserved them! Doyle, our editor approved or disapproved new ideas, while Mike and Fred were busy taking pictures. Brenda became the hard- working artist for the class and Mrs. Hudson tried to make everyone work hard. After all the deadlines were met, what did we think? From day to day we tried to reach, Even teach. Clown, perhaps not Philosopher, what Mostly, maybe in-between. Ours was not to sterotype, to assign a niche, But rather to give a broad overview. To define the requirments of society To make for a better fit for me and you. Perhaps our goals were out of sight And the outside pressures too earthly real, Or just the opposite like some giant spinning wheel. But as in the search for the holy grail So often we watch them fail And then sadly and lately realize Their failure is also ours. E. I I Mrs. Whittal English 127 ALVA MELOT, Superintendent of Tecumseh Public Schools, is in his sixth year as head administrator. When asked about his job, he stated that he did enjoy being superintendent, but there were many problems that came with it. Mr, Melot considers building space to be a definite problem in his school system. The town and school population has increased so quickly in the last few years that it is hard to keep up in providing adequate facili- ties. Of course, like every superintendent, he deals daily with problems concerning the general upkeep of the buses and buildings. Mr. Melot also stated that he felt Tecumseh was very fortunate that they do receive so many applications for teaching positions every year. This makes the job of hiring qualified teachers easier. LEO MOTLEY, Principal of the Jr. High, enjoys his students and his job. He believes that his job is greatly affected by the age of his student. These years are the more difficult years—kids here (in the Jr. High) act before they thing. Sometimes he feels his biggest problem in the Jr. High is the lack of school spirit. Since the students only attend his school for two years, there is not enough time for them to get involved in the school. The staff also questioned Mr. Motley about what was his opinion of a good teacher. He stated that a good teacher or principal is like a parent, they teach the kids to make decisions on their own. 128 CARL BARKER, High School Principal stated that he likes his job. That is of prime importance espe- cially to a high school principal who must cope with many problems with students ranging from the freshman level to the senior year. His basic policy is to furnish the best education possible to all stu- dents. Of course, many times he feels that the students do not always take advantage of every opportunity; but he does think a majority of Tecumseh students do. Basically, he thinks that teaching and learning should be more relevant to life's situations so that everyone can benefit. Mr. Barker also listed other areas as problems. For instance, the poor attendance by a minority of high school students and there is always the problem of people in the halls.
