The construwtinn of pri- vate offices from the classroom 102, the development of oc- cupational files, and the new collection of college catalogs are testimony to the preparation for the program. But the appointment of counselors, competent to carry on the respon- sibilities of this new educational service, merit brief bi- ographical sketches. Dr. M. Irving Chriswell, Tech alumnus of 1921 and In- structor in Mathematics since 1927, is now a full-time coun- selor. In 1936 he received his doctorate in GUIDANCE and EDUCATIONAL STATISTICS from the University of Buffalo. Gui- dance, personnel work and psychological testing have long been his avocation. With the new emphasis on group guidance his recent efforts in organizing the new Student Council are attracting the attention of other high school student lead- ers. Eugene W. Boller, Tech alumnus of 1918 and Instructor in Drafting since 1920, is our other full-time counselor. Mr. Boller succeeded Calvin Bishop as the school placement officer and his many valuable contacts with personnel men ln industry and former Tech grads in supervisory capacities ad- mlrahly fit him as the School's necessary link with the The the ive world of employment. His experience as executive ln Evening School War-Training VY'f1s1ram and as instructor in OVERSEAS WAH DEPARTMENT PHUMHAM contribute to his effect handling of vocational advisory problems. His lone-time as- sociations with Kappa Siu are well known to Wye olde grads. , - . Guests of the school have never failed to be impressed by this ceremony which opens each of our assembly programs. To be chosen to act as one of the nColor Guardsn is considered an honor cherished by all who qualify. To achieve this distinction, a young man must have shown qualities of dependability, leadership and fine character during his Freshman, Sophomore and Junior years. '10 RALPH BELLAMY DALE BOWINS LOUIS KAIINSK1 In the Spring of each year, the students of the Junior R011 Call rooms nominate five boys from each room who they feel represent the ideals worthy of this honor. The fifteen names of the nominees are submitted to their teachers for a general rating. The eight high- est are choseng one to carry the American flagg one to carry the School flagg four to act as attendants and two to act as alternates. At the end of the school year, as a reward for faithful service, the School bestows a gold pin bearing the combined colors upon each member of the Color Guard. RT LA - SSER RQBE URER ARTHUR MACKIE wgiggxxggznswr TREA5 ser. -Ar-ARMS As we, the Juniors, the Class of 1951, approach the end of our third successful and enjoyable year at Techni- cal, it is with great pride and enthusiasm that we look back upon our past record. Nearly three hundred Juniors, occupying three spacious roll calls, including annexes, face their coming Senior year at Tech. This year in every activity, sports or otherwise, our Class has been well represented. Among our outstand- ing athletes are John Rossi, Walt Burney, Art Mackie, James 0'Donnell, in football, Ed Galluzzo, Max Thein in basket- ballg Ed Saar, Ed Beagle, John Quinlan in swimmingg and many others in the various sports. Walter Burney made second string News All-High and John Rossi received Honor- 32 able Mention. These boys, together with their teammates, have given Tech a fine record. Setting he beat for the band, which comprises chief- ly Juniors, we have Dan Ryan and Paul Mierzwa at the drums. In the other organizations of the School, we find many Ju- nior ofgicers were elected as in the Student Council, Rol- ling Engineers, Senior Hi-Y, International Relations Club and others. Next year, as Seniors, we hope to repay Technical for the many happy hours given us. Much credit belongs to our Faculty Advisors who have led us in carrying out our Class activities. f - f Una ' .Aw-f W . , , . Q 'Q ,V ' r - Q , - V . af' g, 2 1 4 . The Sophomore Class, numbering two hundred and seventy-nine students, is complet- ing its second and thus far its most eventful year. This year thirty-five students have been on the honor roll at least twice. Our Band and Orchestra members total ten. We are proud of the Sophomores who are members of the various clubs and organiza- tions, and trust that they will carry on the work of improving and furthering their leadership next year. The Sophomores also showed signs of talent in dra- matics and debate, at least five boys participating in these activities. We are justly proud of our many members who participated in the following sports: football majors included Wesley Loos, Paul Jackson, Carl Draper, John Rossi, Peter Rao, squad men were Warren Gee, Lawerence Eusanio, Frank Polino, Leonard Stelmachg basketball, Carl Draper, cross country, majors were Walter Schultz, Art Depezynskig squad man Leonard Kaminskig swimming, William Haag, Charles McConnell, Walter Funk, John Rossi, Richard Weber and Edward Pendrys. At this time basketball, track and tennis teams have not yet been organized, but we are sure that the Sophomores will be well repre- sented on them as there is a large number ready to qualify. We, the members of the Sophomore Class, hereby pledge that we will carry on our good work and if possible, better it in the coming year. To our Faculty Advisors, Mrs. Schieb, Mrs. Mur- ray and Miss Smith, we extend our sincere gratitude for their help in successfully guiding us through our Sophomore year. Since we were accepted as members of Technical High School, we realize that the future of the School depends on us, and we will do all in our power to prove ourselves dependable, truthful and loyal. In this short time we have had a large number of students on the School Honor Roll, but we must strive to do better in our next years at Tech. This year the Freshman class has started its physical education program with more enthusiasm then ever before, because the boys are eager to improve Tech's record in every field. We have a high aim and we hope to achieve our goal. Many of our members have proved to be good athletes, and might develop into great stars of the future. Among these is William Glinski who made the basket ball squad. The Tech Band and Orchestra also have attracted a large number of Freshmen. Now that we are near the end of our Freshman year, we are looking forward to our Sophomore year with its many new opportunities and responsibili- ties, and sincerely hope to continue to uphold the fine traditions of Technical High School. We wish at this time to thank our faculty advisors for the assistance they have given us throughout the entire year. There has always been a large response, espec- ially from the Freshman group. This year more than 100 boys offered their services. Several boys who have sold a one half page ad have earned a 4-inch let ter T, while others more ambitious, who have sold a full page ad or its equivalent, have earned a 5-inch let- ter. A few have proved themselves to be real salesmen and have earned the Major T for the sale of one and one- half pages of advertisements. We trust that these boys will en- joy the letters they have earned and that we will have a good number of them back with us in September to compete for the Gold, the Silver or the Bronze Medal Awards. Our main purpose is to gain the interest of the students in the field of aviation. Through this Club, we hope to teach our members more about aviation of today and of the fu- ture. Our organization is composed of twenty-one members in their Freshmen, Sophomore, Junior and Senior years. Our Club meetings are held weekly in Room 114. During the past year, our activities included a tour of the air- port, a picnic for the members, joint meetings with other aeronautical clubs and flying meets which were held down- stairs in the gym. We hope to increase our activities for the coming year by studying new models that are in the news today such as the flying wing, the flying saucer and others which have broken the speed of sound. At this time, the members of the Aeronautical Club would like to thank Mr. Edward Pecora, our Faculty Advisor, for his participation in the Club and for his helpful advice given during the past year. 51 Row 1: Norman G1owacki,Ass't. Since becoming a Hi-Y or- ganization, our membership has been boosted up to twenty-seven members including Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. Our meetings are now held weekly and aneof a varied nature. So far this year our Club activities have been centered around service projects such as our 'Circus Dancen, the pro- ceeds of which went to the polio ward of the Children's Hospital. We believe and firmly insist that by working together in one group, Casimier Kacprowicz, John De Marie, Robert Faller, Walter Wells, Jerry Weimer, Robert Crandall, Ralph we can help to create, maintain, and extend throughout the school and community high stan- dard of Christian Character which is the pur- pose of all Hi-Y organizations. Our C1ub's agenda was headed by service projects, such as playing Santa to the children at the 'Children's Hospital.' The Gamma Phi entertained and distributed gifts among the many patients there. At the beginning of the year our Club was honored with a talk given by Mr. Edward Spind- ler, director of 'Boy' Work' at the downtown Y.M.C.A. In accordance with our own programs, we hold, we are invited to numerous joint meetings. Three times a year we hold an athletic night at which the members enjoy themselves greatly. The program of the Club is under the capable direction of our Vice-President, Kurt Hoffritz. The Club had to be almost entirely re-or- ganized because only three or four members were left from last year. Under the leadership of our new President, Eugene Held, we enlarged our membership considerably by making announce- ments in the assembly and holding meetings after school. During Easter vacation we plan to send Easter baskets to a group of orphans from an orphanage which will be chosen later. Later on we hope to have some prominent speak- ers and social gatherings. Also, we plan to have gym nights and joint meetings in the near future. 68 Recently we have held induction of new members. Students in their Junior year may join the Club, although our enrollment at pres- ent includes only Sophomores and Freshmen. We are indeed fortunate to have Michael Avanzato, now in his second year as advisor for the Club. He helps the Club in many ways and we hope he will stay with us in the future. At this time the Club wishes to express its gratitude to Michael Avanzato, our Club advisor, Mr. E. Spindler, director of boy's work at the downtown Y.M.C.A., and all others who are making this year one of the greatest in the history of the Tech Junior H1-Y. Interspersed with these we had Joint Meetings with other Hi-Y groups, Gym Nights, Movie Nights and Business Meetings. It is the custom of the Senior Hi-Y to have some Christmas project but because of our late start this Fall we were u able to plan a fitting project. So instead we have made ap- propriate plans for Easter. In the latter part of December we elect- ed our officers. The success of our Club this year is due to the splendid leadership of our President, Robert Farrol. When he took over in the Fall, the membership was only two. It is composed of over thirty varsity members, plus many freshmen, each of whom has his own responsibilities. The Band plays both trance and the exit marches at all the blies. At these assemblies all of the are required to wear a white shirt and roon tie, the School Colors. For the past two years plans have completed for remodeling the band room now they have been passed by the Board the en- assem- members a mar- been and of Ed- ucation. With the construction of risers and the sound proofing of the entire room, the band room will be very modern. This year a contest was held for the best playing High School band in the City of Buf- 70 falo. For this contest we recorded three marches which were played over Clint Buehlman's program. After being played over the air, they were sent to Dr. Edwin Franko Goldman, the eminent Bandmaster, for the final judging. One of the many activities of the Band is the Spring Concert. Both marches and concert num- bers are played at this event. The Concert is both enjoyed and promoted by the entire stu- dent body. The Band is set up in a democratic way whereby the officers are elected by the mem- bers and carry out their duties for the better- ment of the entire group. This type of organ- ization promotes and develops leadership. At this time we would like to thank our Director, Mr. Norman J. Vester, for his untir- ing interest in the Band. This year we are losing the SGP- vice of Vince Wyglandalski who will long be remembered for his distinctive style of cheerleading, and John Baker a good potential for college cheering, who joined the squad this year. Good luck, Boys! Others who are new to the squad areg Bob Laswick, Jack Solomon, Art Grabowski and Bob Shubring who all hold lots of promise for the coming years. The team is none other than Tech's and the place Houghton Park. Here at the time when Wa young man's fancy turns to love,n the team is undergoing practice with Coach Ernest Lee Witmer on the in- structing end. The past season saw many heart- breaks in the schedule. With Tech be- ing the only team to defeat Kensington, the chances looked bright for a Cornell Cup but were later dismayed with losses of 1-0 and 2-1. Although many of the veterans of baseball seasons have graduated, new capable candidates are batt- it out for top berths on the team. past many ling 74 The end of the past season saw Tech place third in the League. Among one of the standouts on the team was James Ludtka. Jim, who played a tre- mendous game at shortstop while at Tech, has been signed to play for the New York Yankees of the American League. Ludtka was the only one of Tech's nine to place on the All-High Team at shortstop. Larry Wolchok, a veteran of many seasons, placed as pitcher on the second team. With the return of a few experi- enced players and a burst of new tal- ent to choose from, the team will strive to do its utmost to win the Cornell Cup and keep up its excellent record of the past few years. The team this season was comprised of only two returning major lettermen, Ramon Alonso and Dale Bowins, and a host of newcomers. The prospects for a very fine team in the future are excellent. This is due to the fact that several members of this season's Cross Country squad were Freshmen and Sophomores. Several veterans who will be back next season trying to bring the coveted Cross Country cup to Tech are Arthur Depcznski, Clarence Fitzgerald, Walter Schultz, Stephen Stefanik, Albert Scott, Walter Skotnicki and Gregory Pollack. The team this year was coached again very capably by Mr.Edward Gottsch and was under the management of Robert Wales. The team, limited to only two practice sessions a week, gives keen competition to schools who have their own pools. By their hard work and agliant efforts, Tech swimmers have lalter Funk, William Broconier, John Rossi, Eugene Wolengevitz, Ray Golebiewski, James Creman, George proved that they are no pushover in this sport. Tech's tennis team of 1950 should be one of the best and most successful that we have had. From last year's near-championship All-High position, Mel Fountain and Ed Jocoy are return- ing. This year's team was selected in the traditional manner of the Fall elimination tournament which is held in September when the boys are in top form after playing all summer. Judg- ing from its outcome the team shapes follows: up as 1st singles-Melvin Fountain 2nd singles-Raymond Widelski singles-Edward Jocoy 3rd lst doubles-William Eckert and Donald Berry 2nd doubles-Robert Wales and David Kogel The alternates are Norman Bakos and Eugene Wach. The team will be sparked by Mel Fountain, a Sophomore, Ray Widelski, a Freshman and Ed Jocoy a Junior. Al- though Ray is only a Freshman, he has had much experience in tournaments, and within his four years will undoubt edly reach All-High honors. The team will again be coached by Mr. William Braun. Our hopes to capture the u0ld Park Club Trophyn look pretty fair, but all we can do now is wish the team the best of luck and nloven to their opponents. 3The schedule follows:- tCLove equals zero in tennis? 7 ,L .W 2 fi X pw zfggfifggf in f 7- M x ' Q w -gif- FGOTBALL Tech's football team this year was the pride of the School. The team, which was picked to finish no better than fifth in our league, pulled some of the most surprising upsets of the Harvard Cup series. Tech fin- ished second this year to gain its first Thanksgiving playoff berth in nine years. The two games which placed Tech in a posi- tion for the playoffs were the night game with East, which was the first one in the School's history and which ended in a 6 to 6 tie, and the final game of our regular sea- son in which Tech defeated Bennett 13 to 7. This assured us of a playoff spot on Thanks- giving Day. Tech ended the regular season under the able coaching of Mr. Haas and assistant Coach Mr. Kentner with a four wins, one tie and one loss record. This year we are extremely proud of Gerry Miller and Tony Morgante, both of whom received All-High honors. Seymour Pol- lack and Walter Burney were selected for the All-High second team and John Rossi and Ro- bert Jarnot received honorable mention. Gerry Miller was elected Captain of the All- High Team. This was not due to lack of good athletes, but rather to the lack of experience. With the grad- uation of her seasoned veterans, the banner was left to a new, young team which has steadily improved each sea- son. The past year found our runners at probably their weakest strength, due to injuries and inexperience. However, this only proved to sea- son these men and we look hopefully to 82 the 1950 campaign, for our complete team has returned to avenee past losses. Dale Bowins, terrific distance man, wil carry our colors in the mile. The dash events will be in capable hands when he l vv H who may well be called The Levy Jackso of Tech, Art Mackie, takes the field. Our ranks are replete with many other new, but victory-minded athletes. So, we look to the coming season for not just a tie or a near win but for the nDark Horseu once again to wear Il the golden crown.
