The construction progressed rapidly as shown by the large number on the honor roll, in student council, dramatics, Art Club, Hec Tec, athletics, musical groups and declamation. The class won the cup for the best float in the annual homecoming parade. Although nearly snowed under, the Sophomore Hop was a success. Returning as juniors they were without their friend and leader, Carroll Van Steinburg. Foremen for this year were John Curry, Albert Wedge, Kathryn Whittier and Bill Gorman. The Masquers initiated seven of their ranks, Quill and Scroll claimed eleven, and many other clubs swelled their numbers with juniors. On May 22 the Junior Ball, in a spring garden setting was very successful. Promoted to position of contractor, the seniors elected John Curry, Janet Kramer, Leone Blommer and Velma Jones to guide them through their last year at Tech. Two-hundred and thirty-five strong, they pushed the work on the construction to completion by taking active part in all activities. With Don Klein and Keith Des Marias as co-captains, the football team Went through the season without a defeat. Coach Tommy Antil, a newcomer, and Captain Woodie Johnson led the basket ball team through the district tournament only to meet defeat in the regional. George McKenzie was captain of the track team. Leone Blommer directed the activities of the Girls' Athletic Association, John Curry the Peppy Techs, Virginia Riley the TNT's, Valeria Krier the Hec Tec Club, Betty Ross the Masquers, and Bill Gorman the student council. Yvette Maurer, editor-in-chief, led her staff of journalists to a successful year with The Tech . The Techoes was put out with Kathryn Whittier and Virginia Riley, editors. In February a Round-up , successfully man- aged by Elaine Gustafson, brought out every senior cowboy and cowgirl. Many students entered debate. Betty Ross went as far as the regional contest, where she placed second, with her dramatic declamation. The class play, a three-act comedy named Big Hearted Herbert , was presented the last part of April. Richard Gilman, valedictorian, Hope Thielen, salutatorian, headed a group of sixty- seven on the senior honor roll. Baccalaureate, Rev. Harold Baldwin speaker, class night and graduation, with the main address given by Dean Coffey, completed the building of three worth-while years at Technical High School. Their sophomore year proved very successful under the guidance of Jean Rose, Larry Jensen, Henry Carter and Douglas Sutton. With varied interests, they entered Thespians, sports, musical organizations and student council. The honor roll showed evidences of scholastic standings. To add to the social life, they sponsored a Sophomore Hop on April 3. To begin the building in their junior year the class chose as their leaders Larry Jensen, Dennis Sherry, Jean Lux and Tom May. A number were initiated into Masquers and a group of girls into GAA. Interest was also shown in the school publications, French, German, Art and Floriculture Clubs. Again the honor roll showed a good representation of the class. Sports brought recognition to the athletic-minded group as Ivan Renn and Louis Weinstein were elected football co-captains of 1938. As the climax to a constructive year, the Junior Ball was held at the Central Junior High on May 14. ' Jean Lux Sophomore History IN the fall of 1937, the Sophomore Class began construction on their senior high school re- putation. To strengthen the foundation of this all-important structure they selected Bernice Streitz, Jim Claerbout, Mary Winter, and Sidney Kaplan. Acting as advisers were Miss T. Mulrean and Mr. T. Pierson. The first note of their progress was made when they were awarded the cup for the most attractive float in the homecoming parade. The main activities participated in during the year were dramatics and athletics. Outstanding in dramatics was Rita Mettenberg, and in boys' and girls' athletics were Charles Gregory and Virginia Mund, respectively. On April 22 a successful Sophomore Celebration was held in the gym. Now that this year has been completed a great deal of progress has been made and at the conclusion of the school year 1940, they are certain to have built a structure worthy of praise. The Lettermen's Club, for boys who have received an athletic letter, Floriculture Club, a new project in the greenhouse, and the Conservation Club for those interested in the conservation of natural resources, have been added to the ranks this year. . BADMINTON Badminton was introduced at Tech two years ago and since then has become very popular. A great deal of the increased interest was caused by the tennis courts being taken up for the new building. Badminton not only held interest as an after school sport but in the gym classes as well. The girls chose it as their preference over swimming and archery which are all offered in the Friday classes. After school hours a doubles tournament was held which was entered by many. The enthusi- asts here are M. Koshiol, H. Smith, V. Riley, and L. Rose. Page 55 LEADERS This formal picture is of the olficers and heads of sports in G. A. A. In the back row are V. Blommer, president, C. Maglich, secre- tary and head of volley ball, and E. Munsinger, swimming. The purpose of the club is to foster interest in athletics among the girls. The adviser is Miss Raugust. Page 56 EXCITEMENT Volley ball arouses more interest among the girls than any other sport. This is shown by the num- ber of girls who turn out. After a practice period teams were chosen and a round robin tournament was held with much show of keen competition between classes. Throughout the tournament a great deal of enthusiasm and in- terest was evident. In the pre-tournament practice period each team played the other team. Each team proved itself worthy of the elficient coaching of Miss Lorraine Raugust. Shown are Mildred Swanson and Rosemary Perkins as Tech's human flies. LADY OR TIGER? The entire student body takes an active interest in activities the year around. The interest the girls of Tech take in boy's athletics is typified by Eleanor Solfelt and Jean Rose as they feed the Tech Tiger before completing the decoration for Homecoming which they had been working on that memorable October day when the Tiger did Scalp Staples in its characteristic way. SENIORS The seniors, captain- ed by Joyce Clear- bout, ended their high school basket ball by heading straight for the goal of victory. They are, front row: R. Eickholt, J. Clear- bout, L. Rose, M.
