CADET WINS VALOR AWARD Cadet Sergeant April Poprovo, a member of our Technical High School Air Force Junior ROTC, has been awarded the ROTC’s second highest award, the Valor Silver Award, for her heroic act. At approximately 3:00 p.m. on July 14, 1982, Cadet Poprovo was delivering newspapers in front of 266 Breckwood Boulevard when she heard a child scream from the backyard. She rushed to- ward the backyard and discovered three year old Alexa Leon with severe burns over 90% of her body. Her family, which had been preparing for a cookout, was in a state of shock and confusion. Cadet Poprovo immediately carried Alexa into the house and wrapped her in cold, damp towels. She then called 911 for an ambulance. Cadet Popro- vo’s conduct and actions were instrumental in saving Alexa Leon’s life. Cadet Poprovo is completing her second year in the ROTC Program. She was awarded the Medal at ceremonies held in our Auditorium on Monday, December 20, 1982 at 12 noon. The medal was presented by Mr. Thomas Donahoe, Superinten- dent of Schools. Press Release April Poprovo receiving her medal from Superintendent Office of Community Relations Donahoe. Springfield Public Schools LYDIA KNOWS THE SCHOOL SONG! Most students were not aware of the existance of our School Song and of course, with the excep- tion of a few people, nobody knew the words or tune of the song. Mrs. Metzidakis thought it was time for a change, so she sponsored a contest. The first person to sing the song with the right words and tune would win a 1982 Yearbook. Lyd- ia Martinez remembered the band playing the song at a rally when she was a freshman. With the help of a band student, she mastered the tune. Good Work Lydia! Marcia Vanhorn

THE VAMPIRE STRIKES AGAIN A Bloodmobile was held in January here at Tech and as usual, it was not held in vain (oops!). Tech students donated sixty pints of blood. This amount did not set a record but our intentions were good and well received. Miss Kroll, Bloodmobile Coordinator, reported that out of all the Western Massachusetts high schools, whose enrollments are larger than ours, Tech still records the most pints donated. This shows how our student body rallies to a cause. It was a job well done. When the Spring Bloodmobile rolls around we hope it will be as comparable as our Fall one. Keep up the good work TECHITES! Paul Harris

Z Li = SN) S) od S Of Li (3 Z — They started at the bottom of the ladder. No, | take that back. They started Standing on the floor. Slowly they climbed, looking forward to the day when they would reach the top. The memorable experiences began when they first stepped through Tech’s front door. Slowly, and sometimes painfully, they adjusted to the lifestyle of the high school student. They joined activities and teams. They supported the ““Yearbook,”’ worked for Toys for Tots, gave blood, played sports, washed cars, baked cookies, and performed a myriad of tasks, all in the name of Tech spirit. Upperclassmen harrassed them, faculty members attempted to whip them into shape. But as they climbed, they realized something very important — someday they would be the seniors standing on the top rung, a goal finally attained, and well worth the challenge. Arpedella Barnes
