Mr. McDonough, a drafting instructor, will be missed by his fellow staff members and the students who knew him at Tech. Mr. McDonough was born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts. He graduated from Fitchburg State College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education. At Springfield College he received a Masters degree in Education. Mr. McDonough also attended the University of Connecticut for a time. Mr. McDonough worked in industry and two other school systems (Worcester and East Longmea- dow) before he came to Springfield. In Springfield he taught at Buckingham and Duggan Junior High Schools before becoming a member of the Tech family in 1963. He will end his teaching career having served twenty years at Tech. He was known and always will be known as a fair and compassionate man. These qualities made him a well liked teacher among the student body. Mr. McDonough is ending his twenty-eight year career of teaching, but he always will remember them because of the many acquaintances that he met. The greatest problem that Mr. McDonough now faces is time. He plans to spend most of his time traveling and doing all of the things that one never seems to have time to do while caught up in one’s career. The Yearbook Staff, on behalf of the Tech family, would like to extend good luck, peaceful days and an easy life to Mr. McDonough. We hope that whenever spare time seems to be in abundance that he will reminisce about the years that he taught at Tech. Good Luck!!! Stephanie Murchison THE CITIZENS SPEAK ... The issue of whether or not to build a new high school in Springfield has been a major concern of the city’s citi- zens for over a decade. However, in December of 1982, the voters voiced their opinion in a special referendum vote, and Springfield will open the doors to a combined Classical Techni- cal High School in September, 1986. This high school will be located at Blunt Park. Technical High School The Blunt Park site of the new high school ales) ee apt f ; as + ie pi yt oe Y i aS ae rs Classical was built before 1900. Technical was built in 1906, and two later additions ac- comadated the growing popula- tion. However, we now are 17 years away from the year 2000, and the city should provide its youth with updated technological studies. Granted, those of us presently enrolled at Tech will not be part of this new school. How- ever, those who enter this new building will be given a great start and preparation for the new cen- tury. Steven Clark 4 MEET THE COACHES On the evening of November 30, 1982 at the 37th Pioneer Valley Soccer Officials Association Banquet, our own Mr. Burns was the recipient of the Larry E. Briggs Award. This great award was named after a former University of Massachusetts coach. It has been presented since 1946 to a person who has made great contributions to the sport of soccer in the Pioneer Val- ley. The name Howie Burns is synonymous with Technical High School Sports programs. He has served Tech for the last 21 years. Although Mr. Burns took a leave of absence from the basketball court this past winter, he will return next year. He never coached a losing Tech team for a season. His worst record was 7-7 in 1979- 1980. In the eleven years that Mr. Burns served as Head Coach (with a 131-63 record), he has produced eight tournament teams and, in 1977-78, one Western Mas- sachusetts Championship team. Mr. Burns has devoted many hours perfecting his coaching techniques, trying to get the most athletic skills from his players in order to meet the challenges of the opposition. He does this all year round. He obvious- ly enjoys his work. And Technical High School always will appreciate the efforts of Howie Burns. Jocelyn Borski Mr. Tyrone Sullivan came to Technical High School in September, 1971 as a member of its Phys- ical Education Staff. He also assumed the duties of assistant football and track coach. Coach Sullivan first took over as Head Coach of football in 1977. He reports that that was his hardest season, not only because the team lost every game, but also because it was his first year as Head Coach. The team would stay in the rough until the 1982-83 sea- son, which, to date, was Sullivan’s best team on record (5-3). But the Tech experience is not the only coaching that Mr. Sullivan has done. He has coached Westfield State Basketball for the past three years. He has also coached at Springfield College where he received his undergraduate degree in Physical Edu- cation and a Master’s degree in Guidance and Psy- chology. Mr. Sullivan is a native of Washington, D.C. | asked coach Sullivan what people he would like to coach again, if he could. He told me the Dessa- so’s, Headly’s, Wages’, and Rivera’s because they were not only good all around athletes but also the good people. Mr. Sullivan’s highest goal in coaching is not only to help the student become a successful athlete, but also to help the student become a suc- cessful person. Francisco Duncan SPRING CLEAN UP One of the annual projects of the Technical High School Student Council is the Spring clean up. This past Spring the students did a general clean up of our school grounds. They planted shrubs along our front entrance and reseeded our front lawn. It took a dedicated effort on the part of the students to spread the loam and rake in the new seed. The concern of the student body for a neat and attractive exterior was a motivating factor in this clean up. We hope their effort doesn’t go unnoticed. Steve Clarke ‘ |! OUMEAISE oe, v4 e age oe Se rae faa THE VAMPIRE STRIKES AGAIN A Bloodmobile was held in January here at Tech and as usual, it was not held in vain (oops!). Tech students donated sixty pints of blood. This amount did not set a record but our intentions were good and well received. Miss Kroll, Bloodmobile Coordinator, reported that out of all the Western Massachusetts high schools, whose enrollments are larger than ours, Tech still records the most pints donated. This shows how our student body rallies to a cause. It was a job well done. When the Spring Bloodmobile rolls around we hope it will be as comparable as our Fall one. Keep up the good work TECHITES! Paul Harris CADET WINS VALOR AWARD Cadet Sergeant April Poprovo, a member of our Technical High School Air Force Junior ROTC, has been awarded the ROTC’s second highest award, the Valor Silver Award, for her heroic act. At approximately 3:00 p.m. on July 14, 1982, Cadet Poprovo was delivering newspapers in front of 266 Breckwood Boulevard when she heard a child scream from the backyard. She rushed to- ward the backyard and discovered three year old Alexa Leon with severe burns over 90% of her body. Her family, which had been preparing for a cookout, was in a state of shock and confusion. Cadet Poprovo immediately carried Alexa into the house and wrapped her in cold, damp towels. She then called 911 for an ambulance. Cadet Popro- vo’s conduct and actions were instrumental in saving Alexa Leon’s life. Cadet Poprovo is completing her second year in the ROTC Program. She was awarded the Medal at ceremonies held in our Auditorium on Monday, December 20, 1982 at 12 noon. The medal was presented by Mr. Thomas Donahoe, Superinten- dent of Schools. Press Release April Poprovo receiving her medal from Superintendent Office of Community Relations Donahoe. Springfield Public Schools LYDIA KNOWS THE SCHOOL SONG! Most students were not aware of the existance of our School Song and of course, with the excep- tion of a few people, nobody knew the words or tune of the song. Mrs. Metzidakis thought it was time for a change, so she sponsored a contest. The first person to sing the song with the right words and tune would win a 1982 Yearbook. Lyd- ia Martinez remembered the band playing the song at a rally when she was a freshman. With the help of a band student, she mastered the tune. Good Work Lydia! Marcia Vanhorn Z Li = SN) S) od S Of Li (3 Z — They started at the bottom of the ladder. No, | take that back. They started Standing on the floor. Slowly they climbed, looking forward to the day when they would reach the top. The memorable experiences began when they first stepped through Tech’s front door. Slowly, and sometimes painfully, they adjusted to the lifestyle of the high school student. They joined activities and teams. They supported the ““Yearbook,”’ worked for Toys for Tots, gave blood, played sports, washed cars, baked cookies, and performed a myriad of tasks, all in the name of Tech spirit. Upperclassmen harrassed them, faculty members attempted to whip them into shape. But as they climbed, they realized something very important — someday they would be the seniors standing on the top rung, a goal finally attained, and well worth the challenge. We struggled and worked to establish ourselves And find in a new world our places. We laughed and played and cried together And managed to learn, you see. But years have passed since first we came And SENIORS now are we. Three hundred crammed upon the stage All gowned in orange and black. With tears we all progressed. We planned and didn’t turn back. Farewell, ye halls adorned with signs Of many years gone by. We shall not roam thee anymore Our time we leave is now. We've made it through these four long years Our work is done, you see. Jocelyn’s ambition is to become a Psychiatrist. She hopes to attend Elms College this fall as a Psychology major. CHRISTOPHER DESSASO is the male Warner Medal recipi- ent. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Mannicue Dessaso of 108 Kirk Drive, Chris ranks eleventh in his class. He has been a very active three year member of our R.O.T.C. program, having par- ticipated all three years as a member of its Drill Team. Chris served as the Corps’ Deputy Commander in his Senior year. Chris also was a three year member of the Baseball and Football teams, the Student Council and the P.T.S.O. He also wrestled for Tech for two years and was a member of Junior Achieve- ment. Chris would like to become a career Army officer. He hopes to attend West Point as a Political Science major. The Students and Staff of Technical High School extend congratulations to Jocelyn and Christopher as the 1983 winners of this great honor. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The Technical High School chap- ter of the National Honor Society was Chartered in 1959, succeeding the former Pro Merito Society. Membership is based on scholar- ship and character. Since grades are cumulative, the average for the year determines eligibility. The advantage of belonging to Darrin Gandy the National Honor Society is the opportunity to win scholarship for college through competitive exami- nation. igs Three year Honor members are awarded a certificate, a pin, and a gold tassel to wear on their caps at graduation. | Debbra Villeneuve Jocelyn Borski Renita Brown Theodore Edwards Kelli Davis Douglas Dowling 31 SENIOR OFFICERS TANYA WILLIAMS DEBRA VILLENEUVE PRESIDENT VICE PRESIDENT MARCIA VANHORN KELLI DAVIS SECRETARY ; TREASURER KENNETH ADAIR 93 Grochmal Avenue Technical 1 Tennis; Soccer, Swim- ming WILLIAM ALLEN JOHN ASHEY 428 Page Boulevard Technical 2 Swimming; Tennis Ambition: Geologist ARPEDELLA BARNES 27 Shillingford Street Apartment 1 Technical 1 Yearbook 4; Student Council 4; Toys for Tots 4 Ambition: Pediatrician KIM BEAL 34 BENJAMIN ALICEA 23 Massasoit Place Technical 2 Tennis, ROTC Ambition: Marine Corps CHARLENE ANDERSON DIANA BALSOM 38 Watling Street Technical 2 CATHY BARNETT 123 Westford Avenue Technical 1 Cheerleader; Drama; Track Ambition: Computer Sci- entist JOSEPH BENNIFIELD 46 Massachusetts Avenue Technical 2 Track; Wrestling Ambition: Architect KIMBERLY BOLDEN 211 Wilbraham Road Technical 1 Basketball; Softball Ambition: Air Force DONNA BORTONE 224 Greenaway Drive Technical 1 Ambition: Computer Programmer ERIC BOYD KEVIN BROWN 50 Dartmouth Street Technical 1 Ambition: State Trooper THOMAS BROWN JOCELYN BORSKI 85Narragansett Street College Preparatory National Honor Society 2,3,4; Student Council 3; School Committee Re- presentative 3; Math- letes 1,2,3,4; As Schools Match Wits 2,3; School Health Planning Com- mittee 2,3; Toys for Tots 3; Parent-Teacher-Stu- dent Organization 2,3,4; Yearbook 2,3,4; Dart- mouth Book Award 3; Girls Basketball Man- ager 3; Student Govern- ment Day Representa- tive 4; Ambition: Psychiatrist LAURIE BOUCHER 104 Hadley Street Ambition: Nurse DWAIN BROWN 24 Collins Street Technical 1 Drama Club 1; Tech News Editor 3,4; As Schools Match Wits 4; Homeroom Representa- tive 4; Literary Magazine Ambition: T.V. It also was there to cheer us on in our more positive endeavors. We give the Staff our thanks for their constant ‘“‘push power.’’ It would not have been possible to get any work done if there had not been any hard working teachers who kept our heads in the books. We, as Tech Tigers, greatly appreciate the Administration, Guidance and Faculty who have looked out for our needs and wants. It has the spirit that makes everyone want to join in and participate. There are many different activities designed for students who can learn something about them- selves through participation. At times, students may feel that they have taken on more than they truly can handle. However, they find a way to balance school, homework, an after school job, and school activities. Whether taking part as a member of the Mathletes, the School Store Aides, or Cheerleading Squad, they show enthusiasm. Students exhibit pride in themselves and their school. Coaches and Advisors beam. In 1983, Tech Spirit lives on. Arpedella Barnes 66 TECH SPIRIT! LET’S HEAR IT! This year’s Cheerleading Squad is one of the best that Tech has turned out in quite a while. AIDES The Office Aides play an impor- tant part as student members of the office staff. Last year there were three Office Aides. This year there are six, much to the delight of Mrs. Branchesi, who is the Office Man- ager. However, Mrs. Branchesi would like a few more. Students can become aides if they are willing to give up a study. They can apply through their counselors and then be interviewed by Mrs. Branchesi. If they are not accepted, they are sent back to their study. If they are ac- cepted, the types of jobs that they do are: answer the intercom, deliver mail to central office, file, locate stu- dents, and other miscellaneous du- ties. Mrs. B. has been working here at Tech for five years, and she really enjoys having Office Aides. He plans many community activities for this year’s chorus, one of which will be to visit Bay State West during the Christmas Holi- day. When selecting music for the chorus he chooses songs which are seasonal or occasional. Mr. Melikian has very good pros- pects for this year’s chorus. He states that the attitudes and abilities of the choral students are what will make the chorus be as good as it can. 68 Lisa Robert CHORUS: Seated: Tammy Brown, Yvette Dillon, Maria Sanchez, Michelle Jones. If any faculty member needs a film projector, tape recorder, or any other type of equipment, it is delivered to him when requested. Mr. Melikian states that he could always use volun- teers to help out the A.V.A. Mr. Melikian said things are running very smoothly this year, and he hopes it contin- ues. Jean Burrows Lisa Robert Band- Tech’s band consists of only three students this year. Mr. Melikian, the teacher, is very disappointed with this fact. He believes that many more students have the talent to be in band but aren’t. Most of these students would like to be in band but they cannot. Their schedules and some specific classes interfere, and many of them are making up classes from the year(s) before. Mr. Melikian is doing what he can with this year’s three student band, with high hopes that things will brighten up in the future. Lisa Robert (OOPS! By the time picture taking time rolled around, the band had disbanded. ) The Mathletes Team is coached by Mr. Follett. The group meets on Thurs- day afternoons to practice. Six times during the school year, the team com- petes with other Western Massachu- setts schools. Under the direction of Mrs. Metzidakis and Mr. Pieciak, the class meets every seventh period. The students learned cooperation and teamwork while putting the yearbook together. In the beginning of the year the Business Advisor, Mr. Pieciak, sends students out for business advertise- ments. After the collection deadline, Mrs. Metzidakis, the Editorial Advisor, takes over. Knowing how much money has been collected from advertisement and book sales, she and Mr. Pieciak determine the book’s dimensions, the number of pages, and whether there is enough money for color. This year we have a black and white yearbook consisting of 128 pages. Missing from picture: Kevin Brown and Lydia Martinez On November 19, 1982, TECH NEWS was acknowledged as the ‘“‘Most Improved’ high school newspaper. This was at the Seventh Annual Holyoke Community College Seminar. The catagories judged were: best all around, best make-up layout, best advertisement, best editorial, best sports story, best feature article, best photograph, most improved and best headlines. This was the second consecutive year that TECH NEWS received the “‘Most Improved’’ award. Many high schools from Western Massachusetts competed, including Cathedral, Longmeadow, and Agawam, to name a few. We learned from talking to other high school representatives that we are the only newspaper that actually does the typesetting, layout pages, halftone reproductions and all the printing. We at TECH NEWS hope that the outcome next year will be just as rewarding. Dwain Brown Tech News 73 AFJROTC - A GREAT WAY TO GO In September, 1982, one hun- dred and twenty new cadets and eighty-four upperclassmen _ be- gan the school year. This marked the first of open enrollment. On October 1, 1982 twenty-nine stu- dents from Classical High School and two from the High School of Commerce joined the program, bringing the enrollment to over 250. This made Technical High School the eleventh ranking pro- gram in the nation, based on en- rollment. Our unit was selected by the Air Force as an Honor Unit for the school year 1981-1982. We have been so honored for six of the last seven years. On October 14, 1982 the entire Corps attended the Honor Unit Ceremony in the Armory Parade Field. The cadets performed a ‘“‘pass and review”’ ceremony. This year, the cadets are being led by Group Commander Cadet Colonel Richard Soto, Deputy Commander Cadet Chris Des- saso and Operations Officer Ca- det Colonel Lydia Martinez through an active and exciting year of learning experiences. The Corps held its annual Fam- ily Night for over 500 families and friends on October 21, 1982. PARADES The Technical High School AFJROTC Corps annually marches in several major pa- rades. The parades are as fol- lows: Columbus Day Parade, Veterans Day Parade, Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic, Holyoke St. Patrick’s Day Parade and the Memorial Day Parade. More than one hundred and fifty cadets march in each parade. Thus, we were the largest marching group. lt was once said that a parade in Springfield is not a parade with- out the proud marching cadets. This year will mark Mrs. Barend’s sixteenth year as Advisor. One of the main activities of the Student Council each year is Toys for Tots run in conjunction with the United States Marine Corps. Tech has taken first place in this event for three consecutive years and tied for first with two other schools in 1982. In the Spring an annual clean up day is held. Students get together and clean the school grounds. This year the Student Council was responsible for planting new shrubs along the front entrance and reseeding our front lawn. Another event organized by this group is Orange Day. On this day everyone shows his Tech spirit by wearing the school colors. A rally at the end of the day concludes Orange Day festivities. These activities along with various fund raisers are some of the undertakings the Student Council is responsible for. Marcia Van Horn 79 80 TOYS FOR TOTS During the month of December the Student Council devotes time to the Toys for Tots campaign. Technical High School is one of thousands of high schools that participate in this contest to provide needy children with free toys. Under the able direction of the Student Council Advisor, Mrs. Barend, we were responsible for thinking up creative ways to collect the toys. We used posters, flyers, stickers, and we provided drop off centers at various sections of the city. Some of the sites were the City Library, all of the Big Y Supermarkets in the area and Springdale Mall. As an incentive, Tech students were given one hour off of detention time if they donated a toy. Free popcorn was distributed for the same reason. The City Library offered to erase all overdue book fines if a toy was donated. These were only a few of the plans that were used to get toys. At the end of the campaign, a scrapbook of all of the things that Tech did was put together. Every high school had to pass one in. These books are judged very carefully. A cash award is presented to the school that collects the most toys. The money is used for activities at the school. After taking first place three years in a row, Tech split first place in a three way tie with Cathedral and Longmeadow. The Yearbook Staff would like to extend thanks on behalf of the school to Mrs. Barend, the Student Council, and to those students who made the campaign a success. Thanks to them, hundreds of toys were collected and distributed to children who otherwise would have had a rather bleak Christmas. Arpedella Barnes SP) feswaa os O j-= SP) You may have heard the word dynasty used very often in connection with sports. Here at Technical High School we have our own very special dynasty. Our dynasty is the special breed of student athlete who works in the lonely, sweaty, and tedious world of sports. Those who join the athletic teams here at Tech contribute many hours of devotion to their respective sports. There is no doubt that the sports microcosm of Tech will be highly successful in years to come. The Tigers’ roar will heighten as they do battle with their opponents. Technical High School salutes the Athletic Department and is proud of the high spirit and dignity that it brings to our school. Arpedella Barnes The 1982 Tech Football team became a member of a new football league, the Kosior league. Over the past years, the team has been in the AA Conference, Suburban league, the Independent league, and now the Kosior league. The team has a lot of spirit. The team has a lot of bright spots this year, including running back Fitzgerald Lewis, who is a transfer student from South Carolina. Lewis has brought with him more spirit, pride, and enthusiasm. He has helped the team get through those hard practices along with the help of Gary Webster’s inspiring tactics. Coach Sullivan expected a good competitive team this year. In the past, the team membership has always gone down to under 20 players, and some of the players had to play many different positions during one game. This caused them to tire out quickly, and the team could not do its best. The overall record this season was 5 wins, 3 losses, no ties. This was the best overall record for the team since 1971. Tech was also the WMass Runner up in 1967. Mr. Burns hopes that more students will play next year. The 1982-83 team record was 0-16. The team was a combination of young and experienced. It lacked 4 or 5 true players for being a winning team. Tech’s future prospects are more promising, though we lacked the talent needed to be serious league competition in the tough Pioneer Valley League. Mr. Burns wishes to impress upon the readers the fact that 19 players have stuck together despite the lack of success. Members have come to practice and worked hard. Coach DeBonis believes that his players are fighters because of the fact that they were 0-4 but never gave up. In their struggle to regain respect, they beat two of the best teams in their division, Commerce and Ware. Now they are slowly climbing the ladder of victory. When Coach DeBonis was asked if they would be a contender in the quest for the championship, he replied, ‘‘We only take one game at a time.” Mr. DeBonis has been the girls’ basketball coach for two years and enjoys his job. The assistant coach, Mr. Small, has been working with the team for a short while but loves helping out. The reason why this year’s team is valued is because of its talent. Kim Bolden, a senior, is well known for her dribbling ability. Charlene Anderson, also a senior, is a good offensive and defensive player. Lucille Holmes, a junior, is well Known for her jumpshot. Tawana Haywood, also known as Tech's Paul Silas, has a fine jumpshot. She is also exceptional on defense and rebounding. Tracy Davis, Nancy Vincente, Sonia Diaz, and Marisol Carrasquillo are highly improved players. Darcia Milner BASKETBALL Kneeling: Lucille Holmes, Charlene Anderson, Kimberly Bolden. Row two: Coach Small, Tawana Haywood, Marisol Carrasquillo, Sonia Diaz, Coach DeBonis. 93 This is Coach Singleton’s first year of coaching the Varsity Basketball team. He believes in conditioning his players by lots of strenuous exercising and hours of running. This helps his team to have an aggressive defense and a quick offense. The greatest problem that Coach Singleton had to conquer was conforming his players from thinkers into non-thinkers. ‘‘When one is a thinker, one tends to be more more careful of the shots and misses the one that he usually makes,” confides coach Singleton. He also says that they tend to get into foul trouble, but only when they play man-to-man defense and usually late in the game. This year’s team lacks height and depth. The coach confesses that if they lost their 6’4’’ center that the team would be in deep trouble because of lack of height to replace him. The team’s strength lies in its shooters. The other team members contribute in their strong defensive moves. Coach Singleton is quite optimistic that the team will be a part of the quest for the Western Massachusetts Championship. The coach's well known optimistic statement goes as follows: ‘‘When the smoke clears, Tech will be there.’ The Tiger staff would like to extend its good wishes to the team. Their intention was to sight some whales. A boat was chartered at Hampton Beach Harbor in New Hampshire. The students left for the trip from Tech at 6:00 a.m. Everyone was excited. While out on the ocean, whales were sighted. Everyone kept a sharp lookout as he enjoyed the boat ride and relaxed in the sunshine. The trip was a success. Whales had been sighted, and the students had had a good time. 110 DOUBLE DUTCH COMPETITION In December a Double Dutch Competition was held between Commerce and Technical High Schools. Mrs. Greenspan, the coach, announced the competition and received a vigorous response from our ninth and tenth graders. She was limited to nine students who were divided into groups of three. The trio had to be in the same grade level. The Double Dutch groups were judged by Kim Reardon on speed, timing, and on performing tricks. There were no winners at this competition. It was more of a prepartory experience for the students. However Melonie Brown, a Tech student, received the highest number of points. The other Tech students performed very well for their first official competition. The participating students included the following: Melonie Brown, Terri Davis, Marta Martinez, Brenda Penalbert, Angela Poole, Cynthia Poole, Lillian Rosario, Yolanda Turner, and Shawntell Waldon.
