In Memoriam Mr. Duffin It is both fitting and proper that this year’s Tech Tiger should devote time and space to offer a memorial testimony to one of its most outstanding teachers, the late Orley L. Duffin. “Duff,” as he was called by his colleagues, was born December 8, 1904, and reared in the farmland district of Whitewater, Wisconsin. Daily chores and tests of ingenuity endowed him with personal characteristics so valuable in later life. Destiny did not decree that Orley, in manhood, would become a Wisconsin grain and dairy farmer but rather a teacher of young men. His trail started at the Stout Institute of Practical Arts. Upon graduation, Kansas State University offered him his first teaching assignment. At this institu- tion he met Miss Ona Knight who, later, was to become his wife. In 1931 the trail wends eastward toward New England as the City of Spring- field, in dire need of practical art teachers, offers “Duff? a contract. After sub- stituting for a short period in several schools, he was permanently assigned to Van Sickle Jr. High. In 1933 he was transferred to the High School of Commerce where he estab- lished a course in practical arts and applied subjects. In 1937 the trail is brightened for us as Orley Duffin is assigned by the school department to teach drafting at Technical. The pulse of the drawing department is enlivened by his presence. His energy carries him to all the shop classes as he assists in producing blueprints, models, and engineering sketches for its many stu- dents and teachers as well as outlines and programs for building renovations. In 1948 “Duff” was named chairman of the Mechanical Drawing unit. In this capacity new outlines for courses of study in the subject were innovated. Drawing teachers new to Tech met a friendly supervisor who would struggle continuously to make their path easier even at the sacrifice of his own free time. “Duff” con- tinued to experiment and to improve the methods of teaching drawing to high school students. Following his star, many of them became engrossed in this sub- ject matter and would spend countless hours in our shops to develop patterns and drawings made under his supervision. Teaching never ended in his room nor in any place he frequented. On August 12, 1964, the mortal trail of Orley Duffin ended. As along his life’s path he was called at each turn for greater deeds, so was he called for his great reward. A testimonial is a token of admiration and perhaps an obligation for services well rendered. Certainly we have admired this model teacher and more certainly the literal thousands of pencils of young men as they are marking today on their respective drawing boards all over this nation are in part obligated to him for guiding their first strokes. The community admires him for his loyalty to family and church. Our school is indebted to him for his ingenuity and his inspira- tional patterns. It was once said of a great baseball player, “He was a players’ player.” With- out reservation it could be said of ‘Duff,’ “He was a teachers’ teacher.” Born to teach, may we rest assured that, as he sits at the celestial drawing table, his hand, his pencil, and his thoughts are still vital factors in shaping the destiny of Technical High School and its young men. His teaching trail has no end. Action Behind the Scenes . . No matter what means of trans- portation Techites use, we still make it to school each day. Whether it be fighting for a seat on the much- over-crowded bus, riding on the back of a whizzing scooter, or finding a non-existent parking space for the jalopy, no one really minds. These hardships seem worth it all once in, safe from the masses outside. The time generously allowed before school is occupied in various ways. Some students roam the halls — es- pecially the second floor — bother- ing teachers and attempting to com- plete homework from the previous night. A school day at Tech is always bus- tling with activity. Besides being in- structed seven periods a day, we also find time to meet and talk with our friends, and plan class and school events. The evidence of our strong school spirit is shown in our efforts to support both academic and worthwhile activities. The knowledge we gain and the fun we have will play a tremendous role in the devel- opment of our personalities as good citi- zens and adults. Tech’s Math and Science departments are among the best in the city. These two subjects are taught by the most versatile teachers, who are always willing and able to come to the aid of their students. Tech’s Science Department is equipped with labora- tories in which students, under the watchful eye of a qualified teacher, may perform experiments or look at slides under a microscope. As the Science Department’s importance in Tech ex- 10 pands, so does that of the Mathematics De- partment. Here students are taught the me- chanics of college preparatory math as well as general math by an able teacher, who makes sure his students have learned and learned well. If these two departments did not exist at Tech, many of us would not have been able to obtain admission to the halls of higher learning to which we are going in future years. After school, many Techites wander down the hill to Bennie’s, where they drink coke with spoons and cause the usual disturbances, while others participate in the clubs and sports activities pro- vided by the school. But whatever is done after school, later everyone ends up in his own little corner giving his book his undivided attention! ans Re 4s ee a he ea Pretial SE Eee Tech Tantrums, one of the most eagerly anticipated events of the year, was the usual success. There was a great variety of talent displayed, from a guitar- playing folk singer to the girls’ chorus line, which is an annual attraction. The black-outs, among the favorites in the show, provided rollicking amusement between acts. On both nights of Tantrums, Friday, February twelfth, and Saturday, the thirteenth, Tech’s auditorium was filled to capacity. 14 “Victory, Victory,’ was the cry of all Techites on Saturday afternoons at the football games. We may not have won every time, but our spirit carried us through. The orange and black of the cheerleaders’ uniforms, the blare of the band, and the suspense during the game combined to make Saturday the most colorful and exciting day of the week. After the anticipated victory, unconceivable clamor from Techites was to be heard until the field and surrounding areas were cleared. Then the many roads leading home were jammed and noisy until the victory was known far and wide. 16 7 . i yoy | i i (oul il i NT i fi ‘i Ks i i i i i H i it i “a, Ma i “l 20 22 ‘RSet menorcmomemmeticumnmereiomcc ee ereersereereernesesenecen - 23 School Administration Dr. T. A new addition to our mathematics department, Mr. Savoia is a graduate of American International Col- lege and Holy Cross College. He taught at Ludlow High for ten years before coming to Tech. Mrs. Sears, a new addition to our English depart- ment, graduated from Radcliffe College in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Before coming to Tech, she taught at Agawmm High. Mrs. Sears has enjoyed her first year at Tech. One of the new members of Tech’s home economics department this year is Mrs. Betty Sambor. After receiving her degree from Western Illinois University, she taught in the Ware and Springfield school systems. After leaving teaching to raise her six children, Mrs. Sambor has returned to Tech to continue her career. 26 Mr. Gatchell, another recent addition to our mathe- matics faculty, graduated from the_ University of Massachusetts, and received his master’s degree from Adelphi College and Westfield State College. Before coming to Tech, he taught on Long Island and at Classical Junior High School. Mr. Gatchell thinks that Tech is a very nice school. Before entering the Springfield School System, Mr. Cataldi attended Boston University. A new addition to our physical education staff, he is assistant football coach and is in charge of the Track and Gymnastics teams. When asked his opinion of Tech, he said, “I am very impressed and happy with the school, faculty, and kids.” Retired Teachers Mr. Al Johnson, a veteran Technical High teacher of twenty- three years, completed undergraduate training at Springfield Col- lege. He later went on to graduate work at Columbia University and obtained a Master of Arts degree there. Beginning to teach in Springfield in 1931, he taught at Trade and Forest Park Junior High School. Mr. Johnson came to Tech in 1942 and has been a member of the History Department since his arrival. Contributing greatest in the field of education, Mr. Johnson has been very influential in teacher organization. Some of the offices he has held in professional educational associations are Past-President of the Springfield Education Association, Past-President of the Massachusetts Teachers Association, and State Director of the National Education Association. An avid golf enthusiast , Mr. Johnson has been coaching high school golf teams since his arrival in the Springfield school system. He has coached the Technical High golf team since 1942 to several Western Mass. titles, and on to a state championship. Mr. Johnson was recently honored at a testimonial given at the Oaks Banquet House by the many golfers he has coached, and friends. Young golf pros Bob Bontempo, Bucky O’Brien, and Ronnie Matson further honored Mr. Johnson with the presentation to the school of the “Al Johnson Trophy,” which is presented annually to the most improved student golfer at Tech. Ron Goldstein On January 29, 1965, our school lost one of the best counselors Tech has ever had, Mr. David H. Reed. Tech will always be grateful to a man who really helped our school in many ways. Every one who is connected with Tech was very unhappy to see a good man leave. Mr. Reid was born in Mingo Junction, Ohio. A few years later his family moved to Steubenville, Ohio, and then to Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. He attended Collegiate Preparatory School in Hamilton. At Springfield College, he received a B.S. degree. Mr. Reid obtained a Masters’ Degree at the University of Massachusetts. His first job was being a Recreation Director at Massachusetts Mu tual. Then he went to Central High School as a Physical Educa- tion teacher and a coach of football. Mr. Reid transferred to Commerce High School and taught Biology and Chemistry. In 1943, Mr. Reid came to Technical High School to teach in our Chemistry Department. In 1954, he became a counselor. During the past years at Tech, Mr. Reid was the manager of Black Cat Fiesta, which was once held here annually. He was advisor for several graduating classes. He coached several Faculty Acts for Tech Tantrums. Throughout his stay at Tech, Mr. Reid managed and partially built many activities. While at Tech for the past twelve and a half years, he taught Chemistry. He has also helped and guided many boys on their way to a better and more prosperous future. Mr. Reid is now managing a machine rental business in Agawam, Massachusetts. 27 Library Mrs. Brazeau Typing Miss Shea Mr. Shiparo, Miss Huller, Miss Roy, Miss Murray, Mr. Lague. She is also a member of Future Teacher’s Club, German Club, National Honor Society, and is an editor of Tech News. Congratulations to both from the faculty and student body. 41 Lo Lc E?! Ge, f On a hot, humid evening late in July the news spread across the city that a young athlete had passed away. Edward “Bobo” Harris was a victlm of drowning at Five Mile Pond in Springfield Massachusetts. A whole city listened in sad unbe- lief. He died in the summer of 1964 as he was approaching stardom at his beloved Technical High School. Swiftly and painlessly he passed from a land of far horizons into a horizon without bounds. The outpouring of opponents and teammates who paused to memorialize him was a Western Massachusetts sports call. He was a commanding figure, a gracious, and good sport in defeat. He so con- tributed to a cleanliness, high purpose, and sportsmanship in athletics that his passing is a great loss to the world of sports. However, ‘“‘Bobo’s” death is a greater loss to the young society he mingled with and loved so much. The youth that ap- preciate the things that he stood for have lost a leader, a leader who was a symbol of fair play; a type of youthful leader that is hard to find. I was impressed with his human qualities, his warm, friendly personality. He was always ready for the give-and-take of life—and willing to give more than he took. And so, at this time, let us pause for a moment—we who knew him best; his teachers, his classmates and his friends. Let us pay a final tribute to the memory of a fallen star. In life Technical High was his school. In death his spirit will per- meate Tech’s halls. Mary Ann Allen M arilyn Mills Larry Cote Janice Ross Bette Diamond — Linda Thomason Charles Masse —_— Jackie White President Vice-president Larry Cote Bob Shonak Secretary Treasurer Ginny Olson Nancy Broderick Senior Log As we look back on our three wonderful years at Tech, happy memories come to mind. To lead us in our first year at Tech, we elected Larry Cote to serve as president, Mary Ann Allen to serve as vice-president, Barbara Chmielewski as secretary, and Kathi Evans as treasurer. That year the theme of our dance was “Magic Moments.” As juniors we elected Henry Marchetti to serve as president, Robert Shonak as vice-president, Pat O’Nell as secretary, and Kathy Evans as treasurer. High- lights of that year were our junior dance, “Moonlight Serenade,’ and “April in Paris,” our junior prom. In our senior year, Larry Cote took over as president. Assisting him were Bob Shonak, vice-president, Ginny Olson, secretary, and Nancy Broderick, treasurer. Our senior prom, which was very successful, nicely ended our three wonderful years at Tech. om 92 ‘ ROW 1: Miss Adams, Mrs. Brazeau, Miss Murray, Miss Cormack.
