BRENDA DAVIS. “ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE” To capture the spirit of Mrs. Brenda Davis in this small space is indeed a challenge. We have chosen to honor her because she is the embodiment of Tazewell High Schools most cherished ideals. Mrs. Davis is, of course, a teacher, one who has for eleven years guided students to competence at the typewriter keyboard. Beyond that, however, Mrs. Davis is a friend, a fan, and a cheerleader in the spiritual sense of the word. Always ready with a cheery greeting, a Rind word, or an encouraging opinion, she has lifted our spirits on countless occasions. Her energetic pace feaves us amazed; we marvel at her stamina as we follow her up and down, around and about. We have found Mrs. Davis unfailingly approachable; never have we been afraid to ask for her assistance. Nor can we recall a negative response when time has been solicited toward any cause that the improvement of our school. To know.Mrs. Davis, however, is to know that her interest is not only in Tazewell High School but in each of us as individuals. Her concer fas imprinted itself in our fives in a manner that neither correction e nor white-out can erase. Although she is short of stature, the tallest of students looks up to Mrs. Davis for her high ideals. We have leamed from her that the highest standards of co are quite compatible with an undeniable enjoyment of life, for Mrs. Davis, in a word, is fun. As we look back through the years at the ways in which Tazewell High School has touched our fives and shaped our futures, we will surely remember that Mrs. Davis cheered us on. Mr. Beggs graduated from Matoaka High School and eamed his Bachelor's Degree from Concord College. He later attended Virginia Tech and obtained his Master's Degree. Before coming to Tazewell, Mr. Beggs taught math and social studies in several schools in West Virginia. He has also been an administrator at Richlands High School. Mr. Beggs’ feelings about Tazewell High are summed up by his familiar license plate: THS NO. 1 Mrs. Peggy Lawson is Tazewell High Schools secretary. A glance into the administrative office will quickly show that she is one of the schools fhardest-working individuals. Among her responsibilities are taking telephone calls, correspondence, and general record keeping. Mrs. Lawson always has a smile despite the everyday hassles of the office. Mrs. Iva Dean is assistant principal of Tazewell High School. She is a graduate of Big Creek High School and Concord College. Her Master's Degree was eamed from Radford. Mrs. Dean formerly taught English and math in West Virginia, Tennessee, and in other Virginia schools. Mrs. Dean is always ready to help teachers or students who have problems to be solved. She is an important asset to Tazewell High. Mrs. Mary Hayes is the accounts keeper for Tazewell High School The day-to-day operations of the school require careful accounting for various funds: book fees, club treasuries, picture money, and much more. Mrs. Hayes this year has moved out of the front office in order to pursue her job more efficiently, and many of us miss seeing her friendly face. Our memories of Tazewell High School include not only faces and events, but also a special feeling that we might call the “Spirit of T.H.S.” Nowhere was this feeling more evident than in the lifelong support of Mr. Joe Brown Heldreth, whose spirit we here recall. In his memory we dedicate this page, which attempts to capture just a few of the many sources of Tazewell pride. T.H.S. We lift our eyes unto the hills, That shelter Tazewell High. They give us strength to love and serve That dear old school of mine. Now, as we tread these same halls, meeting the same faces, we are aware that the place seems like home, and many of the people as close as family. We leave Tazewell High School with a strange mixture of jubilation and regret. We celebrate our freedom from between these walls, but acknowledge that we will miss the experiences — the good times and the bad, the challenges and the victories, but especially the friendships — that these four years have allowed us. Our Senior year was fike most: an action-packed 180 days, some incredibly stressful and others just plain fun. Together we confronted the dual tasks of completing high school and preparing for life beyond it. There were S.A.T.’S and A.S.V.A.B.’s, mailboxes filled with college advertisements, visits to campuses, and — finally — there was the difficult choice that would help to determine our future paths. We go now in many directions: to colleges and universities, to the service of our country, to occupations, to homemaking. Confidently we embrace the future. One more year! It hardly seems possible. As juniors you really eared to work together and become a unit, for you were confronted with endless fund-raising and prom- planning. A sense of teamwork gave you added pride in being the Class of 1990. You also felt that you were finally an important part of the school, as you took leadership in many clubs and played varsity sports for T.H.S. You even had your own parking fot, and could sometimes drive to school. It does sometimes seem that you take one step forward and two steps back. You are no longer the most inexperienced group in school, you know your way around, and yet you still don’t get the respect of an upperclassman. You are not newcomers any more, but you still face two more long years of high school. You have a leamer’s or even a driver's ficense, but you rarely get to go out on your own. Your parents seem to think you are still a freshman. Don't be discouraged! You really have taken more steps forward CLASS COLORS: PINK and GREY than you realize. Well, maybe it isn’t exactly a jungle, but you do need to stay awake in order to survive. It’s an unwelcome adjustment to suddenly be the youngest group in the school, and to feel that everybody else looks down on you. You have adjusted, though, as you have made your way into our jungle. You fave feared your way around, figured out which teachers are really serious about tardies, and whom to talk to if you have a problem. You have also made yourselves an active part of this school. Dennison, who retired at that time. Mrs. Den- nison, herself a graduate of T.H.S., had been a teacher here for many years. Most of us knew her as the goverment teacher whose pride in the U.S.A. was matched by her pride in our school. We saw her personal interest in Tazewell stu- dents as she posted near her door clippings con- ceming their accomplishments. She knew many of us, even though we had not yet been in her classes, and she never failed to give a cheerful ae as we passed by. From earlier seniors we ‘feared that Mrs. D’s class, and her friend- ship, were experiences to look forward to. We are disappointed to have missed being her students, but glad to have known her as the friendly lady in room 103. Mrs. Dennison continues to reside in Tazewell, and although we feel her absence at T.H.S., we wish her the best as she enjoys a well-deserved retirement. In November of 1988, our own bachelor bi- ology teacher Mr. “Bird Ed’’ Kinser reached the conclusion that nests were meant for two, and invited a young lady to share his. Despite his attempts to keep the big date a secret, T.H.S. students were on hand to appropriately decorate his car in time for the wedding. They work to encourage each other and the community to stand together against drinking and driving. T.H.S. fas two clubs for students who desire to participate in religious organizations. Both are involved in encouraging members to exemplify their faith in the school environment. Each club is active in projects which aid children, the elderly, and other members of the community. Typical projects are children’s Christmas programs, and an adopt-a-grandparent program in conjunction with Heritage Hall. The motto of Teens for Christ is “Helping Hands.” The Fel- lowship of Christian Athletes reminds members that ‘Your talent is God's gift to you; what you make of your talent is your gift to God.”’ The popularity of these two organizations is an indication that many T.H.S. students are concerned with the spiritual aspect of life. This year’s annual staff did their very best to see to it that this annual was better than ever. We worked hard meeting deadline after deadline and creating a variety of layouts. We hope that all of T.H.S. will enjoy this yearbook now, and for many years to come. On October 30, 1988, the Peak Staff made a journey up to The Peak. It was a long, steep hike to the top, but the view from there was so breath- taking that it was well worth the effort. After we walked down to the bottom, the staff went to Mrs. McPherson's flouse and enjoyed an indoor picnic. That day was one that will not be soon forgotten by the 1989 Peak Annual Staff.
