Along with a keen sense of humor, these two men have continually had a pleasant and understanding nature. They have constantly been available when called upon to perform tasks for the administration, teachers, and students. A special tribute is given to “Grat and Jack” for their increasing service in their many years at Tazewell High School. 5 •w In Memoriam Ellis M. PERCY BYSSHE SHELLEY 6 Memories of Reflection Tazewell High School holds delightful and unforgettable mem¬ ories for all of us. The 1974-75 Peak presents our many educa¬ tional, athletic, and social activities. The learning acquired in the classroom, the influence received from acquaintances, administrators and faculty, and the honors bestowed on many of us serve as preparation for our adult roles in society. The academic knowledge obtained during our high school days will assist us in the years to come. We are greatly enhanced by the body development and aes¬ thetic beauty attained in our physical activities. These activities include not only a well developed physical education program, but also a wide range of athletic programs. Our high school years would not be complete without our involvement in a variety of social activities. These activities, including clubs and musical programs, help prepare us as well- rounded individuals. These events will be remembered throughout our lives. As we daydream in years to come, this annual will assist us in keeping alive the friendships and other treasures of our years at T.H.S. 7 Sheriff Osborne discussing county laws. The two phase project was incorporated in the class plans for the year by developing and in depth study of Tazewell County History and a one-week poetry seminar. The research for the history included several field trips by the class, numerous lectures and class reports. The quiet poet for the poetry seminar was Dr. R. Baird Shuman, professor of Education at Duke University, who worked with many individuals and presented public lectures on poetry during the week. The enthusiasm and excitement of the “poet project was widespread and has had a lasting effect on the English program at Tazewell. 14 Valedictorian- Sandy Shepard Salutatorian— Jenny Surface Achievements All students at Tazewell High School have their yearly grades averaged according to the National Association of Secondary School Principals plan. The grades for Seniors are again averaged at the end of the first semester of the senior year and the GPA (grade point average) is deter¬ mined at this time on the 4-point scale. Many students often have the same GPA, although among the upper 5% there is usually a fractional difference so that two emerge as Valedictorian and Salutatorian. These are only two of the academic achievements for which Tazewell High School students strive. The Governor’s Conference for the Gifted is de¬ signed for rising juniors and seniors who are gifted and or talented in the fine arts, the humanities, the natural and physical sciences, and or history and so¬ cial sciences. Governor’s school for the Gifted- Tom Pridgen 15 D VOICE F M O C R A C Y David Saunders won second place honors in the state Voice of Democracy contest and first place in the district. David, grandson of Mr. Mrs. Jim Higginbotham of Tazewell, became eligible for the state contest by win¬ ning both the local and distri ct contests. The local contest held on Dec. 5, 1974, as spon¬ sored by the Barnes-Beavers Post No. 7136 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. David’s original essary was entitled “My Responsibil¬ ity as a Citizen.” WINNERS: D. Saunders, 1st place; M. Hankins, 2nd place; E. Nash, 3rd place. P. Harman, B. Hankins, M. Hankins, M. Rodriquez, H. Brown, R. Heldreth, M. Kinder, E. Nash, P. Ramey, D. Saunders, R. Conn. These 10th, 1 1th, and 12th grade students were eligible to inter¬ pret (in original essays) the theme, “My Responsibility as a Citizen.” The best essays, from three to five minutes in length, were then read to a panel of local judges. These judges determined which essay from Tazewell High should be sent to the district contest. The district essays, in turn, were sent to the state contest. 16 Many students from all over the county were selected to take part in the first, Youth-In-Government Day in Tazewell County. The students were selected by their history teachers to represent their class. The students were juniors and seniors and were assigned a county official to work with for half-a-day. After this the students enjoyed a luncheon at the American Legion Building in Tazewell. Each student and county official enjoyed the day and wished it could have lasted longer. The purpose of Youth-In-Government Day was for the students to learn more about their county officials and the work they do. After the day was over each student brought back to class reports of his experience. Youth- In-Government Day will now be held each year. Tazewell High School had eight participants and four alternatives. Y O U IN T H PARTICIPANTS: M. Roberts, D. Butcher, M. Schrader, K. Kinder, J. Angles, R. Conn, D. Harman, and R. It would seem, we need to begin developing a broad goal for education, so that each individual can function better in our post-techno¬ logical society. Students must not be allowed to vegetate through four years of school. They should be required to learn a basic core of knowledge and encouraged to branch out into their own areas of interest. All students are capable of learning some things and some are capable of learning many things. If we expect to adequately prepare our youths to cope with their future - then we must provide them with opportunities to make educational choices. FLOWER: White Rose. “This is the beginning of what will follow.” Our class motto is significant of the class we are and have been. It is significant of our pride, determination, and hope for the future. We are proud we are the class of ’75—proud that we have been a class at Tazewell High School, proud that we have served her well, and proud that we have fulfilled life and the expectations that people have of us. We are also determined—determined that we become successful, determined that we meet the goals we have set for ourselves, and determined to become useful citizens. Besides our pride and determination we have hope—hope that we will live our lives to their fullest, hope that we will obtain all we want, and hope that this is the beginning of what will follow. The freshmen look forward to becoming fully involved in the academic and extracurricular life of the school in the coming years. 120 Douglas Able Nancy Adkins Kathy Alley Karen Andes Ennna Asbury JoAnn Asbury Patricia Asbury Randall Asbury Shirley Asbury Debbie Atha Angela Boswell Thomas Bowling Wanda Bowman Jeane Brewer Dennis Bryant Shane Burton Kelly Buskell Jeff Carter Rosemary Carter Jack Cecil Steve Baber Jim Bailey David Ball Lisha Bandy Danny Barnett Virginia Barrett Leonard Beavers Timmy Beavers Pam Billips Mark Billings Kim Blankenship Richard Boothe 121 Diane Counts Everett Cox Raymond Cox Greg Crawford Lavonne Crisp Larry Davis Emily Dean Danny Dennis Frankie Deskins Frances Dillard Brian Dillow Pamelia Dunford Curtiss Christian Richard Cline Shelia Cline Pattie Clyburn Vickie Clyburn Joy Cochran Marcia Cochran Richard Cook Kevin Cooke Rhonda Cornwell Rodney Dunford Kenneth Evans Robin link Debbie Fox Kathy French Robbyne Fuller Lisa Garland Kip Gentry Mary Gibson Gail Gillespie 122 Kim Gillespie Kelly Glavaris Billie Graham Elizabeth Graham Mike Griffith Tamra Griffith Charles Grubb Eva Hale Mitchell Hale James Hamilton Sharon Hamilin Tina Hamm Joe Harman John Harman Rita Harman Charles Henegar Shelby Hill David Hincher Melissa Hodge James Honaker Roger Hoops Deno Howery Jody Howery Edward Huff Randy Jackson Robin Harman Shellia Harman Jeff Harris Glenn Harrison Michael Harrison Wendell Harrison Claude Havannah Berlin Hayes 123 Sandra Lambert Laura Laney Ricky Large Calvin Linkous Jamie Lockhart Keister Lockhart Jay Long Betty Looney Brenda Lowe Kenneth Martin Vicky McAmis Jerry McCann Johnny Kitts Brenda Jones Linda Jones Linda Jones Joseph Keen Alberta Kidd Lavonda Kidd Ray Kinder Darlene Lambert Linda Lambert Doug McCormic Grat McDonald Henrietta McDonald Lucille McDonald Sharon McReynolds Lynn Meadows Susan Melvin Patricia Mershon Sue Messer Howard Mitchell 124 Lawrence Mitchell Ricky Mitchell Tommy Mitchell Lisa Monk Greg Moore Billy Moorehead Michael Moorefield Kathy Moss William Moss David Mullins Sara Payne Ricky Pearson Jerry Pennington Bill Philips Tammy Pickett Melvin Pickett Dorothy Proffit Yvette Pruett Barbara Pruitt Arnold Quesenberry — — Jack Murray Melinda Mustard Chris Neel LaRhonda Neel Mary Nipper Dawn Nunley Melford O’Quinn Tony O’Quinn Bobby Osbourne Tony Parsons Amanda Pauley Debbie Paxton 125 John Santolla Georgia Sawyers Larry Sheets Mary Sheets Mildred Sheets Ricky Shepard Sara Shepard Calvin Sizemore Sherry Sluss Brenda Smith Charlie Smith Randell Smith Jeanette Rainey David Rhodes Mike Richardson Debbie Riddle Brenda Roberts Wilbur Roberts Debra Robinette George Rose Marvetta Rutherford Doris Salyers Anna Snapp Barbara Sparks Bonnie Sparks Diane Sparks Eddie Sparks James Sparks Lonnie Sparks Margie Sparks Vickie Sparks Charlene Stanton 126 Debbie Stevenson Rebekah Stevenson Janice Stilwell Melanie Stillwell Luther Stinson Kim Sykes Ruth Taylor Curtis Toney Elmena Tullock Steve Turley Mollie VanDyke Kathy Vanhoozier Tammy Vanhoozier Jane Waddle Bob Walk Calvin Whitt Freda Whitt Robert Whitt Regina Wickham Randy Wilburn Nancy Willis Ray Willis Susan Winfrey Mike Witt Mary Wolfe Homer Wright Kay Wyatt Donna Yates Debbie Yost Kay Young 127 ■ Best All Around Freshmen Homeroom Presidents Emily Dean Jeff Carter Kelly Buskill Dahnmon Cecil Jimmy Honaker Deno Howery David Rhodes 128 s The Student Cooperative Association serves as the gov¬ erning body for the students at Tazewell High School. The S.C.A. collaborates with the Administration, the faculty, and the students in trying to establish innovations for the school. One of the many functions of the S.C.A. is to grant charters for the creation of clubs. On the following pages are clubs that serve a useful purpose to the Community while offering the students a chance to participate in extra¬ curricu lar activities.
