FOREWORD This has been a year filled with happiness and many eventful happenings. As the year comes to an end, we are touched with a bit of sadness, recalling our many friendships shared with one another during the past year. We are now ready to take the next step-the big step into the future. We welcome it with warm smiles but we’ll never forget this memorable year. CONTENTS DEDICA TION ADMINISTRA TION CLASSES A THLETICS A D VER TI SEME NTS 9 Dedication We, the class of 1968, wishing to show our respect and devotion for our principal and friend, Mr. Eugene Ross, proudly dedicate this edition of the Peak to him. For his sense of humor, his kindness and understanding, his willingness to help us at any time, and his hard work for our benefit, we offer him our deepest appreciation and respect. to Mr. Ross always takes time out to talk to students. Most of his time is spent working out solutions to school problems. We, the students, rely on the assistance of our principal and teach¬ ers during the course of a day as they aid us in finding the answers to the many problems that perplex us. 12 It It ' ll LESTER JONES CLAUDE VAN DYKE Supt. of Schools Chrman. of School Board To paraphrase the words of a great American: No one, not in my situation, can appreciate my feeling at this parting. To this place, and the kindness of its people, 1 owe everything. In the halls of learning 1 have lived and labored for many decades, and have passed from a young to an older man. 1 now leave, knowing 1 may not return, just as you Seniors are leaving, never to return again. We are both “graduates”, and just as the word implies, this Commencement time means a new beginning for us. As 1 shall be stepping onto the banks, you are entering the mainstream, and will be swept into the current of life. We spent many long hours doing homework and just worrying about homework undone. But as the day which would end it all. the day of graduation, approached, we realized that the occasion would be a very dear, but very sad one for those 221 Seniors. We had entered these hallowed halls as eighth graders. We may have been smallest in size, but certainly not in success. Cherry Harman as President for our class led us to greatness in all things we did, along with Renny King as Vice President, Marty Van Dyke as Secretary, Brenda Baldwin as Treasurer, and under the sponsorship of Mrs. Helen Tiller. As our Cheerleaders we chose Susan Royall, Sharon Santolla, Judy Hayes, Josie Whitt, Pat Young, Leanna Cole, Debbie Beavers, and Liz Osborne. As the months flew by wejoined various organizations and participated in many extracurricular activities. It took time but we eventually came to feel as though we belonged. That year we chose Pat Young and Bill Brown the Best Eighth Grader. It was time for us to leave the auditorium before someone else. But the eighth grade was moved to the junior high so we were bottom rung on the ladder again. Our class officers that year were Bill Brown, President, Carl Riley, Vice President, Marty VanDyke, Secretary, and Kenny Farley, Treas¬ urer. Our class sponsor who guided us through all our undertakings was Mrs. Demarcy Payne. That year we elected Betty Edwards, and Marty VanDyke. We had a great year in the sports field. They were Bill Brown, President, Renny Kind, Vice Presi¬ dent, Eddie Meade as Secretary, and Nancy Robertson as Treasurer. Our sponsor was again Mrs. DeMarcy Payne. Our Sophomore year ended witli a little sadness in the hearts of all but also with great joy. We were now Juniors. We had only two more rungs to climb until a big part of our lives would be ended leaving nothing but memories, both good and bad. As Juniors we gained many new privileges. As time progressed we began to make plans for the Junior play. We finally chose Arsenic and Old Lace and the final production was very outstanding. It was the best play ever presented by a class in this school. Then came time for the biggest event of the entire year. It was Prom time! The theme of the Prom was “Arabian Knights.” Even the Seniors agreed that it was beautiful. Most of the decorations were made by hand and they were absolutely gorgeous. Again that final day came and we moved one more step up the ladder. But there was one big difference this time. We now moved to the top step of that ladder and became Seniors, “big tough Seniors.” Along with title came many privileges and lots of hard work. Our officers were Bill Brown, President, Lewis Slaughter, Vice President, Lois Peery, Secretary, and Tommy Noakes, Treasurer. We could not have hoped for better leaders. The person who took much of her spare time and guided us in everything that we undertook was Mary Lewis. As the year began, we elected our varsity cheerleaders. They were Susan Royall—Head Cheerleader, Debbie Beavers, Betty Edwards, and Leanna Cole. It was our turn to elect the 1967 Homecoming Queen. We chose Miss Susan Royall. Her Senior attendants were Betty Edwards and Debbie Beavers. Her escort was Mr. Kenny Farley, and escorts for her attendants were Bill Brown and George Godbey. Then came Superlatives. Our favorites were Susan Royall and George Godbey, Best-all-round-Seniors. Next came the Senior play. A play, entitled “Harvey”, was presented. It was a tremendous success. Credit must be given to these boys who have con¬ tributed a great deal to the team with their hustle and their desire to win, Jerry Turley, George Godbey, Ernie Yost, Jack Crabtree, David Richardson and Buddy Blevins. Coach Tiff Kiser, in his 12th year as head coach, again has led the Bulldogs to their usual top position in the powerful Southwest District. Year after year he has obtained this feat and this year is no exception. The Bulldogs under one of the top winningest coaches in Southwest Virginia, started slow, but as the year progressed so did the Bulldogs. And again the desire, hustle and determination of the team, plus the excellent coaching of Coach Kiser has paid off, and the 1967-1968 edition of the Bulldogs will go into history along with the past great teams of Tazewell High School. CO A CHES The Tazewell High School Athletic Department for the year 1967-1968 is headed by Athletic Director Coach Dave Rider. Coach Rider also doubles up as head football coach. Working with Coach Rider in football season are Coach Tiff Kiser, Coach Tom Short, and Coach Charles Frye who is in charge of the Junior Varsity program. In our Junior Hi program handling football season was Coach Jerry Peery. This past season, the coaches feel that the football season was fairly good. The varsity team finished with a 8-2 record and the J. V. team played only two games but won both. Heading basketball program is Coach Tiff Kiser assisted by Coach Charles Frye. In our Track program, we have Coach Tom Short and also Coach Jerry Peery with Jr. Hi. We at Tazewell are extremely proud and excited to open our track season on a brand new track, said to be one of the finest in this part of the country. Coach Rider as Athletic Director feels that he has a well qualified and extremely hardworking staff. With the youth of some of the coaches and the experience of others, he feels this makes for an ideal staff. Of course the boss of them all, the man who makes them move, is our principal, Mr. Eugene Ross. THE PEAK STAFF The Tazewell High School annual staff receives little recognition from the students until time for annuals to go on sale. However, many activities precede this final moment. The members take the pictures and sell the ads. The members assimilate the yearbook and send it to the publisher. These people give the students the means through which they can remember their high school years. The final product, the yearbook, evidences the time and effort expended by both the sponsor and the annual staff. Stacks and Stacks of Pictures! You mean it takes three! All Work and No Play! The Student Cooperative Association is composed of every student in Tazewell High School. The council is made up of four executive officers, each class president, a representative from each homeroom, and a representative from each club. The purpose of the student council is to discuss and decide upon important matters which arise daily in the student body. The council works along with the teachers and principal to make Tazewell High School a better place to spend our high school days. Good representatives are the most important part of a successful S.C.A. I feel that this year’s representatives are the best ever, and to them goes all credit this year for our achievements. I would like to give the student council and the student body my sincere thanks for their cooperation because without this cooperation nothing could have been accomplished. On our arrival at the 1967 session of Girl’s State held at Radford College, we were anticipating a week of marching and of studying Virginia’s government. The blisters on our feet were evidence that we did have a long week of march¬ ing, marching,. . . ! But the “boring” study of government was presented in such a way as to make it interesting and exciting. Each girl, as a “citizen” of a mock “city”, voted in the elections, and participated in her municipal government. Susan Royall was elected Senator from Tazewell. Through the different approach, each girl returned to her respective high school with a new insight in Virginia’s government. Ross, all the fear, admiration, reverence, awe, respect and deference, in which we hold him that he may when we are gone, relinquish all to our esteemed assistant principal, Ellis M. Fields that Mr. Fields may distribute said tear, admiration, reverence, awe, respect and deference impartially among incoming Freshmen in order that said incoming Freshmen may comport themselves with becoming circumspection in his presence, as we have always endeavored to conduct ourselves. Secondly: We give to our teachers all the A’s that are on the face of the earth or in the garrets above the earth or in the Subways under the earth, that they may distribute them generously among all students. We also give back and return to our beloved teachers all the unsolicited advice, information, reproofs, admonitions and platitudes to all students in coming years. Thirdly: We bequeath to the incumbent Juniors of Tazewell High School, all Senior Activities, privileges, and our seats in the front-middle section of the Auditorium. We also bequesth to said Juniors, our polished manners that said Juniors may in all matters conduct themselves with the gravity and impressiveness befitting our successors. Fourthly: We give and bequeath to the incumbent Sophomores of Tazewell High School all quiet, modest characteristics that they may when they are Juniors be only, merely nothing but simple Juniors. Fifthly: We give and bequeath to the incumbent Freshmen of Tazewell High School our never failing loving kindness, that said incumbent Freshmen when they shall be Sophomores next year, may not inflict suffering upon the then Freshmen. Sixthly: We give and bequeath to the incoming infant Freshmen of Tazewell High School all our courage, fortitude, forbearance and resolute endurance. We make this bequest that said incoming Freshmen may bear up bravely under the tortures, torments, ridicule, and humiliations that upper classmen are sure to impose upon them. Seventhly: We give and bequeath all our lost belongings, old trash and messes to our beloved custodians Grat and Jack. We also bequeath to our custodians, cleaner, neater students in the future. Eighthly: We bequeath to our parents all our patience and fortitude in order that they may endure the pains of parenthood. Ninthly: To the town of Tazewell, we bequeath our ambitions, children and grand-children that the Town of Tazewell may prosper in coming years. We make, constitute and appoint our beloved sponsors. Miss Mary Lewis, Miss Ruth Macom, Mrs. Emily Dennison, Mrs. Eleanor Smith, Mrs. Martha Chudina, Mrs. Marie Keenan, and Mrs. Paula Hale, to be executors of this our last will and testament.
