Advertisements. 18 26 84 100 146 time of Nmlhercolff nor the faintheart:od needed Administration The dictionary defines a teacher as one who instructs. Yet our teachers at T. H. S. do more than merely instruct us in the mysteries of ad¬ vanced math, shorthand or the complicated Workings of the United States government. Our teachers sponsor clubs where we meet to share our interests and ideas. Several are class sponsors, providing guidance and help as we strive to work together for the good of our class. When our extra curricular activities re¬ quire chaperones, they are there, willing to help us and enjoying it. And, outside of class, in the community, they are still there, helping us grow up as useful citizens in a confusing world. I wonder what he ' s thinking about now? Faculty gatherings add spice to the teacher ' s daily round. Mrs. Hubbard ' s sixth period class studies election procedures. Cha-cha-cha, Miss Scott!! Teachers come to school early and leave late. They take bus duty and fill out reports. In addition to regularly scheduled classes they work in the office or the library and take study halls. Sometimes they work in the cafeteria. This is part of a teacher ' s full life. When the long school day is over, they return to homes and family. Still, they have school work. They spend hours grading papers and reading reports, planning class projects and filling out report cards. Truly, a teacher is more than a mere instructor. A teacher is human, therefore, she tries to share life with others, commonly called students. 7 Miss Hill ' s class learns the fine art of dressmaking. Classes The dictionary defines a student as one who is engaged in or given to study. We are all stu¬ dents, some with many talents, some with fewer. As students we are given every available opportunity to learn by studying. For those of us whose only concern is housekeeping there is a home eco nomics course. There are typing, busi¬ ness math, bookkeeping and shorthand course for those who wish to become secretaries or clerks. Many boys like the agricultural, shop and mechan¬ ical drawing courses. Others find great satisfac- 8 tion in challenging courses such as algebra, ge¬ ometry, advanced mathematics, biology, chemis¬ try or physics. Others among us enjoy the art course, or prefer English or the histories. There is something for all of us. But academic studies are not the only phase in a student ' s life. We learn to share our abilities and help others. Several have appeared on a quiz program and others have learned to make good speeches by entering the Challenge of Citizen¬ ship contest. The Rotary Club chooses a Boy of the Week partially because good qualities have been developed by his studies. If we are members of the Student Co-operative Association we learn to become good leaders. Yes, this is an important phase of a student ' s life but it is only a part of it. Many girls take turns preparing bulletin board like this one. Mr. Boswell, a senior teacher and club sponsor, meets with the F. B. L. A. Sports It has often been said that it makes no difference whether one wins or loses but how one plays the game. T. H. S. agrees with this statement and tries to instill the spirit of good sportsmanship in its students. Both girls and boys take three years of physical education at T. H. S. Archery, tennis, softball, basketball and golf are only a few of the sports in which the students participate. One of the highlights of the year is the class tournaments. Everyone enjoys the friendly rivalry among the students. Grrrrr-eat! ! ! Yea Bulldogs! ! T. H. S. starts its sports year with football. We scream and we yell urging the team on to victory. Then comes basketball and we yell again. Though we may not always win we are loyal to the team. Later on, we support our golf, track and wrestling teams. The T. H. S. coaches and faculty try to instill sportsmanship in every member of the student body. Last year for the first time, T. H. S. succeeded in winning the Sportsmanship trophy for basketball. Many of our best athletes try to set standards of good sportsmanship for others, knowing that they influence other students. Activities Another important phase of a high school career is student activities. These activities in addition to academic studies are designed to help students become well-rounded. The band is an important student activity. Al¬ though small in size, its members are an enthusi¬ astic and vital part of T. H. S. Our cheerleaders are also important. They led the cheers of the stu¬ dent body which helped cheer our teams to victory. T. H. S. has many clubs which help the students become good-all-around students. Many of the athletes are members of the Monogram Club. The F. T. A. encourages girls to consider teaching as a career. The Projector Club boys learn to operate and take care of projectors and other equipment. T. H. S. clubs are designed for different interests and each and every student can find an activity which interests him. 12 Several clubs have sponsored dances after athletic contests. This, too, contributes to the making of a well-rounded student. T. H. S. also provides other activities. In November many students particpated in the production of the annual Senior Play. Earlier in the year a group of students appeared on Klassroom Kuiz. in Roanoke, Virginia. Then in December a Christmas Pageant was presented and Mr. Davis or¬ ganized a Senior choir. This choir sang carols for the pageant. The annual May Day is another important student activity. The physical education department produces this program and it is always well received. These activities all contribute to the making of a well-rounded person. In addi¬ tion, students learn to rely and depend on each other. But Father, I live here! I think you have a very good chance for acceptance. Now girls, this is what will have to be done. I 4 According to the schedule, he should be in physics this period. These personality ratings are so long. I She has dedicated her life to helping us, bewildered and uncompre¬ hending students. Her patience, desire and willingness to serve are her virtues. Never still, constantly busy, she hovers near us, helping us, ad¬ vising us and teaching us. So, in honor of this fine woman, we, the members of the annual staff dedicate the 1965 Peak to Mrs. Polly Hagy, a shining light in a twilight world. 15 A Teacher affects eternity: he can never tell where his influence stops. Henry Brooks Adams ' Mr. Eugene Ross Principal Mr. J. L. Walthall Superintendent of Schools Mr. Claude Van Dyke Chairman of the School Board We might make a list of places such as Bridges Creek, Hodgenville, Shadwell, Stratford, Milan, Thorn, Dole, Blantyre. Never heard of most of them? From these unlikely places came Washington, Lincoln, Jefferson, Shakespeare, Edison, Copernicus, Pasteur, Livingston. These were all small towns, or sometimes no town at all. Topping the list, of course, is Bethlehem, little among the clans of Judah, but which produced the great ancient king, David, and later One even greater than David. In this day and age we seem obsessed with bigness. We speak of big money, big spend¬ er, and so the important man becomes a big shot. How big is your school? is a familiar question from a stranger. We would do well to remember that God has never been concerned with bigness. He made man from the lowly dust, and He uses small things, unimportant places, ordinary people to ac¬ complish His purposes. Out of a land much smaller than Virginia came two of the world ' s great¬ est religions. Most of us at Tazewell High School come from small places, but we know from the names listed above that there is no limit to the horizon or to the contribution we can make to our world. Colors: Lilac and White Flower: White Rose As the class of 1965, we entered T.H.S. the fall of 1960, and we were quite excited about it. As eighth graders, we had a football team and that winter, we had basketball games. Spring brought the anticipated annual eighth grade party. When the colorful autumn of 1961 dawned, we were more accustomed to our responsibilities. Charles Altizer served as Treasurer of the S.C.A. We presented our Freshman Follies talent show, then worked toward our annual class party. As Sophomores, our school spirit spurred onward in the beginning of the school session in 1962. We presented our talent show with success. Charles Altizer served as Secretary of the S.C.A. We were privileged to elect the following cheerleaders: Linda Kiser, Martha Monk, Judy Waters, and Libby Weaver. Members of our class formed a band and played for our class party. In our Junior year we became an even larger part of T.H.S. Charles Altizer served well as Vice President of the S.C.A. Judy Waters, Pat Whittacker, and Marlyn Slaughter cheered our teams onward. That spring we presented our Junior play, Cheaper By the Dozen in order to raise money for the annual Junior-Senior Prom. After much careful deliberation, we chose as our theme, Evening in Paris . Within three short months of sports, dating, working and relaxing, we, the class of 1965, returned to the idolized position of Seniors. Charles Altizer fulfilled the tradition by serving as President of the S.C.A. Judy Waters served as head cheerleader and Pat Whittacker and Marlyn Slaughter worked under her guidance. In November we gave the Senior play, January Thaw.” This year, as is traditional, the Juniors gave the prom. We worry about college or work after graduation next year. Fearfully, many of us took our college boards and applied to the colleges of our choice. There still remained first semester exams, talent shows, class tournaments, Easter and May Day! Though we were sad and somewhat scared about leaving T. H. S. we savored every moment; the Junior-Senior Pro m , the Senior Banquet, where we received our 1965 annuals, the last assembly programs and the anticipation of grad¬ uation and summer. We have shown our school spirit as we enthusiastically cheered at pep rallies and games. For the first time our class chose an attendant for the Homecoming Court. A fellow classmate was given a title of honor when he became Treasurer of the S.C.A. Two girls were chosen to represent the fresh¬ men class as May Princesses. Soon similar organi¬ zations were formed in other states. The instructors realized that a national organi¬ zation should be established. Thus, emerged the national organization, the Future Far¬ mers of America. The F. F. A. develops agricultural leadership, cooperation, and citizenship of young Americans. 124 L-R. Stagecraft Stagecraft is one of the special classes offered at T.H.S. Those boys taking it are chosen for their interests, and are given credit in art. The stagecraft boys are responsi¬ ble for the auditorium, stagesettings, and props. At least one boy must be present while the auditorium is in use. The stagecraft boys are to be congratulated for their fine work during the past year. The stagecraft boys helped in making the Senior play a success by their excellent stagesettings. The stagesetting for the S.C.A. installation was one of the responsibilities of the stagecraft boys. Guidance The guidance department of Tazewell High School is made up of the principal and a group of teachers who help us, as students, face many decisions. Through their interest and understanding, each of us receives extra motivation for success. 126 Charles Grindstaff Martha George Patricia Thompson Charles Altizer We the girls of the Old Dominion - You guys, straighten up those lines! - Get up girls, its six o ' clock. These are familiar phrases to the girls and boys who attended Virginia Girls ' and Boys ' State at Radford and Williamsburg last summer. While there, we learned much about our state government through classes and well-known speakers. It was one of the greatest experiences we have had during our high school education. We were proud to have represented Tazewell High School at Girls’ and Boys’ State. Marilyn Ziegler One of the major events at T. H. S. is Homecoming. Excitement and antici- - pation fills the air as the student body awaits the big game. Perhaps the selection and crowning of the King and Queen provides most of the excitement. The Monogram Club provides escorts for the Homecoming attendants. This year, for the first time the Sophomores and Freshmen were per¬ mitted to select attendents. After an absence of three years, T. H. S. once again produced a beautiful Christmas Pageant for 1964. Mr. J. L. Walthall usually writes the scripts for our pageant. We want to pause and thank him for taking the necessary time and effort he has unselfishly given to this project. We feel that it is only right to express our gratitude and appreciation for his many years of dedicated service.
