Tazewell High School Tazewell, Virginia Co-Editor Martha Jo Sutherland Editor Mary Jane Salyer Business Manager Janie Hayes The band members enjoyed the trips to the out-of- town games. The journey home proved to be a time for relaxing and having an enjoyable time. FOREWORD When in the course of another year, it becomes necessary for the Senior Class of 1963 to present the nineteenth edition of THE PEAK, to say goodbye to the halls of Tazewell High School, the kind and loyal teachers, and the thrill of our senior year, a sincere regard for our fellow students require that we should present our yearbook with our most sincere and best wishes. And for the successful com¬ pletion and reception of this volume, with a firm belief in and reliance on our Creator, we hereby pledge to ourselves and our high school, our Hopes, our Willingness to Work, and our belief in Taze¬ well High School. Our assembly programs were varied. Some were informative, others were entertaining, and still others were religious presentations. All of them were useful in building a well-rounded personality. It does not seem possible that another semester has flown by; but, plenty of evi¬ dence can be found. No matter which way you turn, everyone seems to be cramming for semester exams. CONTENTS Alma Mater. 2 Dedication . 6 Administration. 8 Classes.14 Sports.68 Activities.84 Advertising.130 The stage craft boys have spent long hours posting the pictures for the Art Exhibit. These paintings and sketches are a few examples of the fine art work presented in the art exhibit. . In Appreciation . . . In such a few words it is totally impossible to express our regard and gratefulness to one who has given so fully and unselfishly of time, patience, and self. He has corrected our mistakes in class, directed us on our way, and helped us in every possible way. Many of his own personal hours were spent coaching our plays, selling tickets for the games, and helping our many endeavors. When only one quiet moment would have seemed like heaven, he was ready to come to bat for any of us, student or teacher. To one who has helped so greatly and deserves so much in return, we, the annual staff of 1963, dedicate this printing of THE PEAK to Mr. Howard Crouch. 6 His love of music is a second profession. He di¬ rects his church choir, and sometimes he is called upon to sing at our assembly programs. He is frequently called upon to help the students while he works in the office. 7 Mr. J. L. Walthall Superintendent of Schools Mr. Claude Van Dyke Jeffersonville Representative of School Board It was in his annual message to Congress, in 1941, less than a month after Pearl Harbor, that President Franklin D. Roosevelt uttered these now famous words: In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms. The first is freedom of speech and expression--everywhere in the world. Tne sec¬ ond is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way- -every¬ where in the world. The third is freedom from want--everywhere in the world. The fourth is freedom from fear--anywhere in the world. Two decades have gone by, and these four freedoms are not yet guaranteed--everywhere in the world. But progress is being made, and will be made. We think this progress is and will be based on Education; educating our boys and girls to WANT these four freedoms for them¬ selves and for every other boy and girl, the wide world over. Educating them to want them enough to work for them, to earn them, and finally to be worthy of being free. A F H T ° E U R R S And they say women do alot of talking Do-Re-Me- Drugstore Cowboy We have homework too, you know. I know its in there somewhere. He ' s eating again--it ' s his favorite hobby. Who can ever forget those last moments when we jammed up to the teacher ' s desk to get a class with our friends or that special chum? There was always the curiosity to see the new teachers and find out how tuff they were going to be. We always had to stop in the halls to chat awhile before rushing to beat that four-minute bell. The crowd in the lunchroom and the rush on the stairs were good excuses to be tardy for that next class. We could never forget the year we became juniors. That meant more homework, more books to read for English class, more class projects, more clubs to join, and more friends to meet. That was the year when MORE seemed to be the password for students and teachers. We had a chance to go to those great football games, to help publish the school paper, to work on the annual, and the greatest chance of all was the thrill and romance of going to the Junior-Senior Prom. At last came the school year of 1962-63; and we ' re seniors, the final accomplishment of four years. The second week of September was so important to us for that was the date when our classrings finally came. English was our greatest class; MACBETH seemed a losing fight, but we won. With the advance of the second semester, many of us began getting ready for the thrill of graduation and the future. We finished our testing program and filled in applications for military service, employment, or college. We proudly finished a wonderful year with a sense of accom¬ plishment, relief, and self-satisfaction. In the years to come, we shall look back on these magic days and say do you remember when.. After four years of hard work, we are the SENIORS OF 1963. We, have waited all these years to get our class rings, to hear Seniors First in assembly, and to be looked up to by the other students. While all these things make us happy, we are in some respects sad . Soon we will be parting, each will go his own way to take his place as a servant to his God and his country. This meant that we had completed three years of work and play while we were making our place in the History of T.H.S. This new name also meant that we would be allowed some new privileges. The most welcome of these is ordering our class- rings if we have acquired 16 credits and the most thrilling being able to attend the prom. We went to work with great enthusiasm for the next year when we would be Seniors . All of these things go into the making of another Magic Year at T.H.S. Impossible, but yet quite true. It almost seemed as if a magician had charmed us through two years of h igh school at T.H.S. So many things were behind and many more ahead. All joined their efforts to make this year one to remember. Our hard work was rewarded. Never before had our class been so united; never had we been so studious and yet so fun-loving. New friends were made and old acquain¬ tances renewed. Even teachers seemed to have the desire to be well liked by the students. We can truthfully say that our sophomore year was a year to be remem¬ bered. Class Motto: Life is not so short but that there is always room enough for courtesy. We applied the Greek motto of a sound mind in a strong body to all of our activities. Fall was the time for football and our team was well underway. We sat tensely watching the game from the first kickoff to the final seconds of the last quarter. It was a great year for our team. Basketball gamqs provided plenty of competition and entertainment throughout the cold winter months. We yelled and rejoiced when the ball was tipped into our basket. The boys were in good condition and we en¬ joyed the fast pace of the competition. Spring came, and the boys eagerly trooped out to the fields. Track shoes were laced and tied in the early spring, and our boys were off to a run¬ ning start. We marveled at the performances of our team as they hurled through the air or cast the discus. In every sport good sportsmanship played a vital role in the attitude and action of all the spectators and players at THS. We knew that good sportsmanship was our responsibility, and it was our duty to continue to play fairly. Whenever we heard or sang our school song, we remembered the many games and wonderful times that we had shared. It was with a great feel¬ ing of pride that we cheered our school on to victory and fame. o Jerry Angles Larry Brown Don Barnes Mike Brooks Tazewell 59 kIIf mm Tazewell 35 $ 8 ; Tazewell 19 Tazewell 0 1st Tazewell Tazewell 6 27 IP ill Tazewell 59 ■M Tazewell 26 ' I Tazewell 32 Tazewell 18 Wayne Dixon Kermit Dye Bill Fox Larry Lambert Richard Mays SCORES Castlewood Bristol Grundy Andrew Lewis Graham Richlands Marion Big Creek Saltville Patrick Henery Tom Mustard Bill Shawver Phil Myers Bill Stevenson Bill Sutherland Don Van Dyke Jim Williams (Vertical) ROW 1: Junior Whittaker, Eddie Short. VARSITY FOOTBALL I Let ' s play ball! Go get ' em Bulldogs! ' The 1962-63 football season at T.H.S. was the most successful since 1951. The Bulldogs racked up a 9-1 record. Their lone defeat came at the hands of Graham, the Virginia State Champions. It was without a doubt the finest team that has been assembled at Tazewell for many a year. The Bulldogs boasted the No. 1 scorer in Virginia, the hard running, hard-hitting fullback, Don Barnes. Tom Mustard, Don Barnes, Jerry Angles, and Jim Williams made the All-Southwest District Team. The Bulldogs alsoplaced three on the All-Tazewell County Team; Barnes, Mustard, and Larry Lambert. Barnes and Mustard also made the All-Area Team for Southwest Virginia. A group of twenty-five boys in good physical condition made up Tazewell High School ' s first wrestling team. They participated in six matches, with each individual getting a limited amount of time to try to score for his team. They had a fair record for their first year; however, with more experience the team will constantly improve and should win consistently in the future. Hey.get those shoulders down!! Bpr 83 We will always retain the memory of the laughter and glee of our friends, the duties and honors of our school activities, and the thought of those good old days. Our Homecoming game was thrilling for the players, students, and the Homecoming Court, Nor can we forget the glorious dance that followed the game, where students and alumni had a wonderful time. Th e band that year seemed better than ever. It did not matter whether they were marching on the field or playing for a school program; they were tops. They added pep to our school spirit and accompanied the song in our hearts. The Thespian Troupe of T H S provided entertainment throughout the year. We rocked with laughter or sat silent in thought as the actors and actresses offered us the results of many hours of practice. The talent shows were fun, and no one can forget the witty and talented acts that were offered. Spring rolled around and with it came the chance to attend club conven¬ tions and go sight seeing. The Glee Club and the band gave the Spring Concert which was enjoyed by everyone who attended. The most glorious moment to remember was the Junior-Senior Prom. Our Prom was the result of the ideas, work, and co-operation of the students and sponsors. The loveliness of the last dance was the perfect setting in which to survey the events of another year at Tazewell High School. We will recall the magic of those fun-filled times when the gang met after school to go to the drugstore for a coke and a quick snack; then headed for the ball field. We always had fun at those sessions of band and football practice. We remembered at the last minute the things that we had to have before the parade or game. Last-minute rush was us. We had to call the cleaners for our band or cheerleader uniforms. It seemed as if time flew; but, we made it by hook or crook. Weekends were a relief after those hit-the book weekdays. It was a joy to forget literature themes, pop tests, history reports, and lab ex¬ periments. We could not wait to go bowling or to the movies. We liked to stop at Johnson’s, Joe ' s, or Glenn ' s afterwards. It is a joy and an agony for a girl to pick out that special dress for school dances and the Prom. The stores in our area provided a wide selection of gowns that would please any girl. The grocery stores and supermarkets were scenes of many and varied purchases. We dashed in to pick up items which would adorn a banquet table, turn up at a barbecue, or be served as refreshments at a sock- hop . When spring came, our local stores were overrun by students buying things for the Junior-Senior Prom. Everything from glue and thumbtacks to wire and crepe-paper was collected by the busy juniors and seniors. We are sincerely grateful to you--the wonderful stores and advertisers who have made this—a year to be remembered.
