THE PRESENTED BY THE SENIOR CLASS OF TAZEWELL HIGH SCHOOL Tazewell, Virginia FOREWORD As this the last year of high school for the 1954 graduating class closes, it is with a touch of sadness that we recall the friendships, the happiness, and the activities we have shared with one another during the year. It is our sincere hope that in the future, the events depicted on these pages will serve to recall memories of the days we have spent at Tazewell High School. With this thought we present THE PEAK of 1954. TAZEWELL HIGH SCHOOL Tazewell, Virginia With warm friendship and admiration the Class of 1954 dedicates THE PEAK to Mrs. Rufus G. Hagy. Her untiring efforts, her concern for us, and her loyalty to our school have endeared her to the hearts of all who know her. It is with appreciation for her interest and guiding influence in directing us during our four years of high school that we honor her with this dedication. DEDICATION 3acuity FACULTY MR. J. L. There we were, the freshmen of 1950. We were dubbed with the name Class of ' 54, but we were much too confused making new adjustments to be very much impressed with the title. Nineteen fifty-four—it seemed so far away, but before we knew it, nineteen fifty-four had rolled around. , How clearly we remember that first year. Indeed, we thought the s agger sys em w named as we staggered from one class to another and tried to locate our newly assigned lockers in three minutes. One of the first things on the class agenda was the election of officers. After the voting was concluded, we found ourselves under the leadership of Bernard Riley as presiden , Steve Childress, vice president; Mamie Kinder, secretary; and Lucy Pennington, treasurer. Mamie Howery and Phyllis Eanes were chosen to lead us in cheering our teams to victory. In the late fall after a week of suspense, Steve Childress and Mamie Howery were elected Best Freshmen, for the Carnival Court. The last major event for us that year was May Day in which Betty Jeanne Puckett and Mamie Howery represented our class. , , ftnon „H By our sophomore year we were getting into the swing of things. Soon after P we elected Bobby Webb president; Bernard Riley, vice president; Larry Tabor, secretary; an Kay Crawford, treasurer. That was the first year Bill Peery and George Lewis played on the varsity football team. We were pleased when George Lewis made all-county football team t . Mamie Howery and Melster Neese were chosen cheerleaders for our sophomore year. Jann Kensinger, Nannie Sheets, Shirley Sykes, and Nancye Sue Gillespie made the girls vars ty bas¬ ketball team and George Lewis was on the boys’ varsity basketball team. Bernard Riley an Kay Crawford were elected Best Sophomores and were presented with the other superlatives in the Carnival Court. Jann Kensinger and Kay Crawford represented our class in the May Court Mr. Eugene E.Ross came to Tazewell High School as principal in our junior year. George Wallace who capably presided over our class was assisted by Bobby Webb as vice president, ROBERT ALFRED WEBB GEORGE MAHANNA WALLACE NINA BERNICE WHITE FRED ALLEN WHITE LOIS WHITT FREDDY F. WILLIAMS RICHARD WHITT WILLIAM DALE WOODALL HISTORY Mamie Kinder, secretary; and Kathleen Burton, treasurer. The cheering section was most ably led by Melster Neese and Freddy Williams. Kay Crawford and Bernard Riley were elected Best Juniors. Our class play Rest Assured” was a huge success. The proceeds from the play went to finance the Junior-Senior Prom whose theme was Moonlight and Magnolias. It was a gala and unforgettable event. Gwen Mundy, Caroll Stamper, Jann Kensinger, and Phyllis Eanes Fisher were princesses in the 1953 May Court. So very much has happened this, our senior year — the Carnival, Homecoming, Christmas Formal, the trip to Washington, and May Day. Bobby Webb again was elected president of the class. Other class officers elected were Stanley Hill, vice president; Gwen Mundy, secretary- treasurer. Raymond Kiser was elected president of the student body and Albert Akers as vice president. Bill Peery and Kay Crawford were chosen King and Queen of Homecoming. Imogene Stallard, George Lewis, Jo Ella Stevenson, and Raymond Kiser were members of the Homecoming Court. Our football co-captains, Bill Peery and George Lewis, earned positions on the all-county team. Melster Neese, Jo Ella Stevenson and Freddy Williams were our peppy cheerleaders. Early in the winter came the election of superlatives who were presented at the carnival. Ray¬ mond Kiser and Jo Ella Stevenson were elected Best Seniors and were crowned as King and Queen of Winter Capers. The girls ' varsity basketball team won the county championship by defeat¬ ing the Graham team. Again George Lewis made the all county basketball team. In May, after weeks of fun and practice, our class presented the senior play Ol’ Doc. May Day and the Junior- Senior Prom were two of the unforgettable events of our last month in school. The arrival of our caps and gowns, our invitations, and our annuals have brought us nearer to our final event—graduation. These four years have been filled with wonderful and exciting experiences; and as we leave we take with us the memories of happy days spent and friendships made at Tazewell High.
