SENIOR CLASS HISTORY Here we are one hundred and forty strong, all seniors, and all dignified. Class rings, front row chapel seats, and the trip to Washington prove our status. We waited a long time for this year but now that it is here and almost gone we find that we dislike leaving. Thinking back over our high school days, we remember that . . . In the fall of 1918, the stagger system was started to reduce the size of the classes. It was in our freshman vear that Mr. Casto Ramsey came as head coach of football and basketball. Sara Shelton. Phyllis Bowman, and Bettve Gillespie were elected cheerleaders our first year. Judy Litz and Carol Lindsay represented our class in the May Court. Our sophomore class elected Edward (Cokie) Kitts, president; Johnny Wallace, vice presi¬ dent; and Tommy Rasniek, secretary-treasurer. Mack Sparks, Warner Collins, and “Cokie’’ Kitts made the varsity football squad that year. Phyllis Bowman and Bettye Gillespie were elected cheerleaders from our class. Carolyn Murray, Faye Baldwin. Betty Mutter, Eleanor (Cricket) Benson, and Peggy Lane Heldreth were on the girls’ varsity basketball team. Betty Mutter and Carol Lindsay were chosen as representatives to the May Court. Class officers for our junior vear were Johnny Wallace, president; Carol Lindsay. vice president; Joan Stephenson, secretary; and Jimmy Doak. treasurer. Bill Phillips, Bettye Gillespie, and Carol Lindsay were elected cheerleaders. Our junior class play, Mama’s Baby Boy, was a smash hit. Jo Lynn Westmoreland, Shirley Phillips, Eleanor Benson, and Carol Lindsay were princesses in the 1951 May Court. “Stardust” was the theme of the prom which we gave for the seniors. Carol Lindsay and “Cokie” Kitts were elected best juniors. The senior class elected Bettye Gillespie, president; Edwin McCall, vice president; and Natalie Crawford, secretary-treasurer. Johnny Wallace was elected president of the student body, and Albert IIagy, vice president. Carol Lindsay, Bettye Gillespie, and Bill Phillips again were the leaders of our cheering section. Our football team, co-captained bv “Cokie” Kitts and “Doug” Peters, won the county and the area championships. Warner Collins, “Doug” Peters, and “Cokie” Kitts won positions on the all-county and the all-area football teams. Bill Stevenson received the award as the most outstand¬ ing player in the backfield. Glenn Nash, Roy Morrison, Bill Stevenson, and Warner Collins were named on the all-county basketball team. “Cricket” Benson and Charlotte Morrow were co-cap¬ tains of the girls’ varsitv basketball team which won the county championship. The class of ’52 sponsored a Christmas formal. This dance was for the seniors and their guest. We hope that it will become a tradition at Tazewell High. Monkey Business, the senior plav. was presented in April. Members of the east were Ann Beery. Renee Spurgeon. Jimmie Arnold. Edwin McCall, Gladys Hurley. Polly Gregory. Tommy Ras¬ niek. Natalie Crawford, Bettye Gillespie, Sara Shelton. Jimmy Doak, Albert Hagy, and Carolyn M array. Jimmy Doak and Carol Lindsay, best seniors, reigned as King and Queen of the school carnival. Tommy Rasniek and Eleanor Benson were crowned King and Queen of the May. Natalie Crawford was maid of honor, and Louise Grindstaff, Jeanne Clavtor, Deloris Dawson, and Carol Lindsay were princesses in the Court. .... Our caps and gowns, invitations and calling cards have come, and in a few days we shall receive our diplomas at the Commencement exercise. This will mark the end of a pleasant chapter in our life story and the beginning of another one which will he filled with new experiences and achievements. In the years which are to come, we shall look hack and remember the hilarious junior plav. the beautiful Christmas formal, the prom in May, and all the nameless hundred and one things which make up pleasant memories of happy days spent at Tazewell High. —Natat.ie Crawford, Historian. —10—
