Tazewell Elementary, home of the Pathfinders, began in 1873 with the first public school in Tazewell County. The school was a log building located at the site of the present high school. The first frame school house was built where the public library now stands, and when it was torn down, a brick building was erected on the same site. This building housed both elementary and high schools from 1906-1953. From 1953-1964 the ele¬ mentary school was located in the present junior high building. In September, 1964, the elementary school was moved to the new building. .There are 760 students enrolled at Tazewell Elementary in kindergarten through sixth grades. There are thirty-five (35) full time faculty members, eight (8) cooks, three (3) custodians, and fifteen (15) bus drivers to meet the individual needs of each student. In addition to these there is a part time school nurse, school psychologist, speech therapist, dentist, nutritionist, compensatory teacher, visiting teacher, and a band director. Tazewell Elementary has a complete library which each student is encouraged to use. Ed¬ ucational Television is available in all classrooms. Special classes are offered in math, reading, and special education. All students participate in a music and physical educa¬ tion program. Band is available for fifth and sixth graders, flutophones for fourth grade and Spanish classes for the thir grade. With the help of the students an art and science show are pre¬ sented annually and a school newspaper is printed.
