Tazewell Elementary School is located on the east side of Tazewell, approximately 2.6 miles from the county courthouse and is reached by turning north off Routes 460 and 19. This school serves an area of sixty square miles, which stretches fifteen miles east to the Bland County line, eight miles west to Liberty, and also to Cliffield and eight miles north to Tip Top. The section most distant from the school is Burke’s Garden: students from this area have a twenty-four mile bus ride including the distance traveled in the Garden itself. A large portion of the children come from the Town of Tazewell, wmcn covers an area of five square miles and has a population of approximately 5,000. The first public school in Tazewell County was started in 1873. in a log building located at the site of the present high school. Thp first frame school house was built where the public library now stands, and when it was torn down, a brick building was erected on the same site. This building housed both elementary and high schools from 1906-1953. From 1953-1964 the elementary school was located in the present junior high building. In September, 1964, the elementary school was moved to the new building adjoining the grounds of Tazewell High School. The first settlers in Tazewell were persons of Scotch-lrish, English and German descent. Much later, as coal mining became a thriving industry in the Tazewell area, Hungarian, Italian, and Polish immigrants came. The Town of Tazewell was originally called Jeffersonville. According to early history, the first settler in what is now Tazewell was William Peery, who staked out a claim in 1773. Samuel Ferguson settled here shortly thereafter. The Virginia General Assembly, in 1799, voted to carve a county out of the wilderness of Southwestern Virginia, and Peery and Ferguson donated part of their land for the county seat. The following principals served Tazewell Elementary School from 1946 to the present: Mr. J.L. Walthall, G.O. McGhee, S.M. Spraker, Wiley Yates, and John F. Cooke.
