Dryden SPEECH, when it becomes the servant of the mind, can wield a power more mighty than the pen, which has been said is mightier than the sword. Through it may throb the thoughts and feelings of an earnest soul, bringing those who hear into a har- mony and recognition of truths, which mere words could not convey. It opens an avenue of self-expression, a breaking of those bonds which hold men and women from expand- ing to a full capacity and which constitute barriers between all of us. Every year teachers, preachers, missionaries and students of other professions are leaving Taylor to take their stand among those who will look to them for help and guidance. It is to these students especially that Speech offers its promises. Thought, voice and gestures must work in harmony and so the department trains in these fields. Not only are the students taught to interpret and express their own thoughts, but opportunities are given which help the students to gain freedom in addressing audiences. This year the Dramatic Club played Shakespeare ' s Merchant of Venice and Hubert Henry Davies ' The Mollusc, and also three one act plays from the second and third year students. This work prepares the students to meet the rising need of worth while selecting and directing plays.
