These events brought out large crowds and the Homecoming win over Frankton ended the week in a victorious uproar. The seniors and sophomores demonstrate their football strategy. The senior cheerleaders show their athletic ability. The Tijauna Trash entertained at Powderpuff half time. The sophomores put a lot of work into the Black Cat Ball. Jo Ellen Darling and Dennis Rupert receive first place for having the best costumes. WW SLEEPY HOLLOW The annual Black Cat Ball was sponsored by the soph- omore class this year. Decorations helped set the stage of a Halloween atmosphere making the dance success- ful. The theme Sleepy Hollow was completed as the stage was decorated like a red barn and a witch hung in the middle of the room over her brewing pot. Eddie Jones and Jo Ellen Darling were crowned Pumpkin Prince and Princess. Also receiving an award for the best costumes are Cindy Brown and Keith Wilder. M i A t ENTERTAINMENT NIGHT PREVIEWS PROGRAM The clowns proved lo be one of the main attractions Faculty cheerleaders show their spirit with a smile. Entertainment Night was a fun-filled evening as basketball games from tbe fiftli grade teams to tbe var- sity were played. Members of tbe GAA gymnastics team entertained tbe fans by displaying tbeir great skill tbey acquired through long hours of practice. The gymnastics team ' s performance was also highlighted by their clowns. Later tbe Ti Hy ' s, Taylor ' s drill team, made their first appearance of the year. Couples Receive Candy Canes From Santa The Second Annual Christmas Dance, sponsored by the senior class, was held December 22, 1969. The Lost Souls provided music for the students in grades 9-12 who attended this semi-formal dance. Santa Claus was guest of honor during the evening. He distributed peppermint candy canes to all the couples. Santa also drew names of five students who won Christmas presents. The decoration committee, headed by Patty Mc- Mullen, purchased a 12-foot Christmas tree which was decorated with ornaments donated by the student body. Twinkling tree lights reflected off the foil cov- ered walls and tables as the couples were showered with styrofoam snow during the last dance. Cathy Brown and her food committee prepared sev- eral kinds of Christmas cookies, sandwiches and holi- day punch. Dishes of Christmas candy and nuts decorated the tables. The THS choir sang a number of Christmas carols including the Christmas Song featuring Pam John- son as the soloist. The choir then led the guests in sing- ing familiar carols. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of Kathy Moorcroft, the Queen of Hearts. CONVOS BREAK ROUTINE During the sectional, the Titans performed a burial of the West- ern Panthers. The convocations this year ranged from the darkest corners of Africa to the darkest corners of the mind. Uncle Walt guided the students on an expedition into the jungles of Africa. He explained the marriage customs of the natives and the inconveniences of living in the jungle. During his presentation he demonstrated how to play various primitive musical instruments. 0. G. Fitzgerald, an expert of the mind, pointed out the fact that everyone has an equal capacity to memo- rize. After meeting a group of twenty-five students, he was able to recall all of their names after an hour. The pep sessions not only gave the students a mental break from studying, but also prompted the enthusi- asm needed to boost the Titans to victories. The com- petition between classes for the spirit jug aroused the emotion of each Titan fan. A hug from Tony Fontain brightens the day for Cerice Lee. It was held on May 9, at the United Steel Workers Hall. The reception lasted from 6:30 to 1:00. Dancing began at 9:00 and the music was provided by the Townsmen. The theme of the reception was Drifting and Dreaming. The theme was promoted by the decora- tions of blue and white with silver stars covering the walls. Randy Brantley, Junior Class President read the welcome and Secretary Cindy Brown gave the invoca- tion. Vice-President Brad Webber gave the prophecies, and the Senior Class Vice-President, Bruce Curry, read the wills. Junior-Senior Reception . . . Pizza Hut . . . and the usual dates successfully help round out Un- social life of each Taylor student. This year we initiated several new events and strived to make those traditional ones more successful. Among the new events was the Morp. The Morp is Prom spelled backwards and was sponsored by the Student Council. The girl asked the boy, drove, and made the boy a coursage. After the ballgames, you would find the Titan fans either at the after-game dances or congregating at the Pizza Hut, where they talked over the resulting game or discussed the coming events. The Morp was a cozy evening for Jane Moore and Mac Fritz. Queen Angela Curry and her court reigned at the Howard County Track Meet. ACTIVITIES STUDENTS PARTICIPATE or Diane Thieke starts the first steps on a weaving loom. Karla Fisher applies her talents in the beginning stages of sculpting. IN ART EXHIBIT Janice Cook adds the finishing touches to her oil painting. Novel ideas formed visually exciting shapes and unique experiences for the more esthetic Taylor High School students. Art classes offered include Art I, II, III, and IV. Art I went into copper enameling and pottery. Art II studied the careers in art and commercial design. The study of advanced problems and techniques in design were combined in Art III and IV. Taylor art students showed their creations at the first annual Public Art Exhibit. A number of Taylor ' s students displayed their works and awards were given to grades one to twelve. The showing was held in the gym and cafeteria April 1, 1970. The art department was headed by Mr. David Harris. Also the art department received new equip- ment; looms, easels, a printing press, and drawing tables. Regina Herron tries her hand on rug making. A TIME TO... APPLY KNOWLEDGE In our rapidly changing technological society, each person ' s need for business education has become even more important! To meet this change, THS offered a variety of classes, in addition to those normally of- fered, to help students prepare for positions as busi- ness leaders and consumers. In addition to those nor- mally offered there is Bookkeeping II, Shorthand II, Office Practice, Business Law, Business English and Business Math. Added to the Business Department facilities were many new typewriters, adding machines, and cal- culators. Approximately 430 students were enrolled in THS business courses. Chris Grills uses the dictation phones for increasing speed in shorthand. First year typing students concentrate on accuracy and efficiency. BUSINESS DEPARTMENT EXPANDS Linda G arrard finds that her typing skills are useful in other classes. Debbie De Grief works on a stencil for office practice. Don Etherington works on his practice set, a financial record of a business, for bookkeeping. INDUSTRIAL ARTS NAMES Steve Phillip tested his car with an analyzer. Mike Hatfield uses the circular saw in completing his wood project. This year the industrial arts department named two outstanding students. Any junior or senior who had taken three or more industrial arts courses was eligi- ble. The student was required to have a 2.0 overall average, and a 3.0 average in industrial arts. The out- standing senior was Erskine H. Carter. The junior was Carey Dale Harnois. The industrial arts club and regular classes put on the Annual Taylor ' s Industrial Arts open house. During this time the public viewed the industrial arts facilities, demonstrations and projects made by the students. A new industrial arts course was offered this year, Graphic Arts II. This pertained to how photography was related to the printing industry. The text used by this class was Graphic Arts Procedures by Karch. OUTSTANDING STUDENTS Power and transportation students find how involved a car can be. Rick McCoIlum measures the depth of a circular piece of wood. Charles McClish tries the zig-saw to cut a design in his project. The reference section of the library proves to be helpful to Bruce Curry, Steve Wooley, and Pat Richards. Lisa Jacques browses through the many new books. The library is equipped with up-to-date news. NEW ADDITION ADDED TO TAYLOR ' S LIBRARY The Taylor High School library has experienced sev- eral major changes. Last summer, the wall between the library and Titan Hall was removed and this enlarged the library considerably. This area is now used for housing reference and nonfiction books. Fiction books are located in the center, with periodicals in the south- west. New carpeting and lounge chairs for the maga- zine area added more comfort for those students who read periodicals. During the summer months about 50 new books were added to the library. This does not include the 300 books which were donated by the Tipton Public Library. The library also has new tables and booth style study carrels, which allow students to study individually. Dick Williams chooses from the many magazines available to the students. HEALTH GIRLS LEARN Pull-ups were a part of the physical education program. Cindy Swain helps on parallel bars. Completing an exhausting routine, Mark Werking, goes into a forward roll. BASICS OF FIRST AID Jeff Kirk increases his ability in broad jump. This year Miss Oyler conducted the ninth grade health classes. The girls made an attempt in first aid and home nursing. Various students in the class were made hypothetical victims and were bandaged from head to toe. Miss Bennett taught eighth, ninth, and tenth grade P.E. classes. The classes consisted of gymnastics, and six weeks of bowling. The gym department this year received new modern dance records, which was included in the courses. Eighth grade students learn the importance of the eye in health. PLANETARIUM ADDED TO Jennie Bouge, Debbie Foster, and Gary Surber stain onion epidermis to observe cells. Susan Maple and Beth Miller find Chemistry quite complicated. Taylor students now have something no other school in Howard County has, a planetarium. The planetari- um is located in the new part of Taylor High School. About 660 stars can be seen in our galaxy while the equipment is in operation. Planets will be colored so the students can recognize them by color. Mercury, Venus, Mars, Neptune, Saturn, Jupiter, the moon, and the sun can all be viewed. The earth can be viewed as to what it looks like from the outside looking in. Paul Eckert and Creed Jones took first place awards in the junior biological division of the Lafayette Regional Science Fair. Their projects were Pho- toperiodism and its Effect on the Rate of Germination and Cell Differentiation of the Fern Spores and Sound and its Effect on the Germination of Fern Spores. Science projects are judged on the basis of ap- pearance, originality of thought, scientific method, clarity of presentation, and the construction of the project. SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Students in experimental design race frogs while teacher is out. In experimental design, Mike Myers injects a chick with sex hor- mones. As the 1969-1970 school year started, the French classes had a new teacher, Mr. Clark. The first year students learned to speak and understand simple spoken French. After completion of the course, they should be able to carry on a basic conversation. Em- phasis was placed on vocabulary and composition for the second year French students. They used newspapers, television programs, magazines, and books. Third year French students studied grammar. They had talk sessions in which the students talked about current issues in France. Andre Jacob! visited one day in the Spanish classes to tell his country and answer questions. They made tacos in food labs, as well as having tasting parties of other Spanish foods in class. Also, they subscribed to the Sunday Mexico City newspaper and enjoyed reading them. This year there was a change in Mrs. Donelson ' s journalism class. Instead of taking a final exam, they prepared an issue of the On Looker . Cathy Eberly escapes from a mouse to the top of a desk, for a pan- tomine in speech class. Jeff Kellar uses the language tape for Spanish lab. JOURNALISM DOES PAPER Team work is the key word to a good newspaper. Brad Webber uses his selling ability in speech class. Geometry classes designed posters in geometric form to prove support for the Titans. 1 s= — — - ' ,: ' ' ' wmnms X — ' f i D a $ ' s Professor Reja Bassilah describes the Mid East Crisis from the Arab ' s point of view to 20th Century and government classes. GEOMETRY For the first time Mrs. Hulka and Mrs. Steiner took over 20th Century and government classes. Each semester the students studied about both local and na- tional government. Throughout the semester a series of speakers like Mr. W. Vabntene of the F.B.I, and Sgt. Kelly of the U.S. Army carried out discussions on various topics. To conclude the year the social studies classes visited the Howard County Jail. This year in World History, the students studied dif- ferent parts of the past and present world. Mr. Barns, under Mr. Morrison ' s guidance, did his student teaching in the World History classes. This year the geometry classes designed spirit post- ers in geometric form to show support for the Titans. Also the college algebra classes participated in six weeks of independent studies. Again this year our school took part in the Annual High School Mathematics Examination. Scott Grant, a junior, won first place. Scott ' s scores, along with sec- ond place winner, Patty McMullen, Randy Sellers and Jerry Eckert, third place winners; were sent to a na- tional level of competition. Patty McMullen, Bob Dickison and Ann Serwick are shown putting on a skit for government class. CLASS MAKES POSTERS Greg Foust relays the importance of natural resources. MARY ANN HUBER WINS The senior homemakers learn the aspects of antiqueing. The home ec. students were very busy this year. Se- nior home ec. students made candle sticks out of old table legs, upholstered old chairs and made formals out of unusual fabrics. The juniors learned how to tailor and their main project this year was making a wool suit with lining. A unit on window treatment, flower arrangement, and good arrangement of home furnishings was completed by the sophomore classes. Cotton suits were also made by the sophomores. Cotton, A-line dresses with sleeves, were made by first year home ec. students and pant-jumpers were made by the eighth graders. The eighth graders also studied child care and money management. The seventh graders learned how to make breakfast, fix snacks, cook quick meals, and prepare sandwiches in addition to studying about family relations and good grooming. Students have new sewing machines to work with. BETTY CROCKER AWARD Shelly Stevens made bed-room slippers in beginning knitting class. Besides cooking, students learn how to keep a clean kitchen. Cutting out patterns is a part of dress making. Eighth graders make their first sewing project. A TIME TO... Besides throwning fun and criticism at the students and faculty, they also had their April Fool fun with the junior high. They published an article that Taylor High School would not be in existence next year because of lack of money. The staff grew in size this year by having a junior staff which will take over as editors from the senior staff. The staff was given special room for the first time this year. The paper itself also grew in size, in that it was published bi-weekly instead of monthly. During first semester the staff was relieved of publishing an issue of the paper so the journalism class could publish it for their final test. Fritz Foster was honored by the Kokomo Tribune as an outstanding staffer. He was selected by the Onlooker staff and was awarded a plaque for this achievement. ONLOOKER— FIRST ROW: M. Moorcroft, R. They were very successful in opening a student lounge with a coke machine for the students. All profits from the machine went to the clubs. The student council gave honor to Taylor this year by starting a foreign exchange student program with the International Fellowship Program. By being in this program Taylor had two South American students visit and sent Jeff Kellar, Sherri Richmond, Vickie Taylor, and Linda Wooley to South America during the summer. At our first annual Football Homecoming, the student council planned the parade and the graduate reception. After the game, they sponsored the homecoming dance. During National Education Week, they sponsored a Student Government Day. Student council members filled the administration positions and FTA members taught classes for a day. The student council started the Howard County In- terschool Student Council for all county high schools. This began the year for a High School Exchange Student Day where student council members of all six high schools visited the other schools. Two members of the student council, Jeff Kirk and Cindy McMullen, were sent to the Indiana Universi- ty Student Council Workshop. The members also at- tended the State Student Council Convention. They helped the 8th graders out this year by sponsoring a convocation to introduce the high school clubs to them. Our two foreign exchange students, Andre Jacobi and Rocio Ramos, were included as honorary members. The members worked the last half of the basketball concessions to earn money for their annual trip. This year the trip was to Chicago, and the members and chaperones stayed at the Conrad Hilton Hotel. They visited the Presidential Building, Museum of Science and Industry, Old Town, the Planetarium, and O ' Hare Airport. They went shopping downtown and attended a banquet at the Ivanhoe Restaurant. As part of an honor for Taylor, the Historical Soci- ety sent Fritz Foster to Washington D.C, for one week. There he attended the Presidential Classroom for Young Americans. This was a study of the in and outs of our federal government. Molly Gibson and Allen Holder represented Taylor High School by attending the area dinner for Jr. His- torical Societies. Roger Daume, Linda Gillespie, Mrs. Steiner and Mrs. Hulka represented the Seniors by at- tending the 5th Annual Birch Bayh Workshop. As part of a movement for spirit, various clubs from Taylor performed skits at pep ses- sions. Contest were also held at the pep sessions. A spirit stick was made and the class or group that could yell the loudest won the stick. This most of all created most school spirit than anything. A class award for the most school spirit went to the sophomores. Individual spirit awards went to Cindy McMullen and Cindy Muneral. Along side of the Cheerblock this year sat the T- Club, wearing their sweaters and jackets that they earned with their major letters. The boys also were en- thusiastic in raising school spirit as they yelled chants with the Cheerblock and participated in the pep ses- sions. The Spanish Club accomplished a great deal this year. Although the weather was bad during homecoming, many hours of hard work were spent building the club ' s float. Other club activities included collecting canned foods for needy families, a car wash, a Christmas party, and a trip to Purdue. At Purdue, the members attended a Tertulia . The Tertulia was a social gathering where the students spoke Spanish with other people and were served refreshments. Later, a program was presented by a Purdue graduate student who had studied in Spain. The most successful accomplishment of the French Club was to send Vicki Taylor to Europe as a foreign exchange student. The money was earned by having a car wash. SPANISH CLUB— FIRST ROW: S. Owen, R. The 1969 edition of the Titan football squad endured many injuries at key in tervals of the season but the team was much improved over previous years. Inex- perience also played a key role in the fate of the Titans this time around. The homecoming victory over Frankton 26-6 in the rain proved to be the outstanding effort of the season. While looking impressive, in several games, the club seemed unable to capitalize in key situations. The Titans placed three members on the All-County Football Squad; guard Pat Richards, safety Mike Calloway, and defensive end Mike Jennings. GOLF AT TAYLOR Varsity Golf: Coach Wise, Dave Rayls, Rusty Manning, Don Etherington, Phil Johnston, Mac Fritz. Taylor ' s varsity golfers, off to their finest season ever, posted a very impressive record this year. The squad was strong all through the depths as the Titans always managed to have one or two men come through even when the chips were down. Golf at Taylor is not a well recognized sport, but with many boys returning to the squad next year, things will be looked upon and golf will take its proper place here at Taylor. With many returning lettermen, one can not help but look upon the future with a bright outlook. Taylor High can be proud as these boys came up with a very fine second place showing in the Howard County Match, only to be capped off by a seventh place finish at the Sectional. -. Second Row: Coach Shields, Vernon Hart, The 1970 brand of the Titan baseball squad got things off in fine fashion by boosting an impressive record and downing some keen competition in doing so. Although the Titans took a hard fought loss in the sectional, baseball still continues on its winning ways here at Taylor. Although the club was basically young, the experience they had, helped them all season long. While losing many key players at different intervals of the season, the Titans were never discouraged and always kept their heads high and fought to the very end in compiling a 13-11 won-loss record. The Titans also captured the Howard County base- ball championship. Rolling along through the season, Taylor grabbed a hard fought 1-0 win over North- western ' s Tigers to claim victory. Although THS has never won a baseball sectional, the future holds a bright outlook in the coming years as the squad is young and the experience gained this past year will help them continue their winning ways. MISS TITAN REIGNS OVER DANCE This year the student body of Taylor High picked Gail Wilson as their choice for the 1969-1970 Miss Titan. Gail reigned over the annual Christmas Dance where she was formally crowned Miss Titan. Gail was chosen for her personality and appearance. She is a member of cheerblock and an active member of the senior class. Along with Gail, members of the Miss Titan Court are Brenda Manning, Connie Johnson, Paula Harrison, and Jody Frazier. The entire faculty and student body wish Gail and her court the best of luck. Gail Wilson was chosen by the student body for Miss Titan. Members of the Miss Titan Court are Brenda Manning, Connie Johnson, Paula Harrison, and Jody Frazier. u WE VENTURE . . . We venture to shape the future of the world to be born under our footsteps. That is the motto of the Class of 1970. As graduation day came, the members of the senior class found themselves looking back at what their high school goals had been and how many of those goals had been reached. But more importantly, the seniors looked also to the future and to the world to be born under our footsteps. Some looked forward to college, some to a job, some to marriage. Yet no matter where the members of the Class of 1970 go, there will always linger the memories of their final days at Taylor High School. Graduation week started with an Honors Day pro- gram. Tim Schreck was named Valedictorian and Linda Gillespie was named Salutatorian. Several se- niors received scholarships from school clubs, outside organizations, and colleges. Many others received recognition for outstanding work in various academic departments. During commencement rehearsal, the seniors tried on their robes and mortarboards. The band was present to play the processional. After the rehearsal, the senior class and its sponsors attended a dinner at Montes Restaurant. Plaques of appreciation were presented to Mrs. Linda Donelson, Mr. Jerry Lam- berson, and Mr. Ray Richardson. The guest speaker at Taylor ' s second graduation was Congressman Richard L. Roudebush. Congressman Roudebush advised the class, Don ' t sell the American system short .... Don ' t belittle our competitive society of industry and commerce .... Don ' t downgrade the future. Speeches were also given by Tim Schreck and Linda Gillespie. Reverend Schreck gave the invoca- tion and benediction. Following the graduation exercises, the Class of 1970 celebrated at their Senior Fling at the YWCA. Swimming, tennis, roller skating, dancing and other activities were available. Gifts were presented throughout the night to all the seniors. As the Class of 1970 departs, it looks forward anx- iously to homecoming and alumni dinners. To the graduates, good luck and may all your hopes and dreams be met. jf ' ' x . ' , $« £ £ £ ifeSftf Class President Greg Foust receives his diploma from Superin- tendent Andrew Fernung. ROUDEBUSH SPEAKS AT GRADUATION President Greg Foust escorts Congressman Roudebush down the aisle at commencement exercises. Diplomas in hands, the Class of ' 70 turn their tassles and receive a standing ovation from parents, teachers, and friends. Graduating seniors wait to be called up to receive their long awaited diplomas. Roudebush advises seniors, Fix a goal . . . aim high ... set out to achieve it . . . and you will. SENIOR CLASS LEAVES VICTORY BELL Gregory Eugene Foust, President Bruce Edward Curry, Vice Pres. Patricia Elaine Smith, Secretary Senior class sponsors Jerry Lamberson, Linda Donelson, and Ray Richardson. The senior class of 1970 has been the most active and progressive class yet. In the niidst of meeting gradua- tion requirements and college admission deadlines, the seniors managed to work in a lot of fun and excite- ment. In December the class sponsored the annual Christmas Dance. The dance was opened to high school student body and the music was provided by the Lost Souls. Early in Feburary of 1970 several se- niors were excused from school to go to Indianapolis to meet President Richard Nixon. They also saw Mrs. Nixon, Governor Edgar Whitcomb, and Indianapolis Mayor Richard Lugar. Members of the class of 1970 were the honored guests at the annual Junior-Senior Reception. The dance, sponsored by the junior class, was held at the United Steelworkers Union Hall and the Townsmen provided the music. Just before graduation the administration gave the seniors a free day. This Senior Day was held outside behind the school building. The seniors participated in games of Softball, volleyball, tug-of-war, dodgeball, sack races, and pie eating contests. Hotdogs, chips, and soft drinks were served for lunch. Traditionally, each graduating class leaves a gift to the school. The class of ' 70 is having an entrance gate to the football field and a victory bell erected. Con- struction should be finished by August and a dedica- tion will be held at that time. As staff members, we experienced depressing moments and could have easily given up, but we kept in mind that the toil was for our school and worked even harder. Speaking on behalf of the entire staff, I would like to express our appreciation to the three people whose help we could not do without. Many thanks go to Mr. Jerry Lamberson for his encouragement and generous advisorship. Mr. Larry Glaze of Paragon Yearbooks also receives much recognition from the staff for the time he spared to help teach new staffers and advise others. We are also grateful to Mr. Ted Hitz of Adams- Hitz Studio for his cooperation in taking our senior portraits and organization pictures. 1970 HELIO STAFF My deepest appreciation goes to my assistant, Pat Smith. She was extremely devoted to her work on the senior section and was always willing to help me with my responsibilities. Charlie Wolf, our photographer, was very dependable and spared much of his free time to take pictures. As a beginning photographer, he showed much talent. Our 14-member staff had eight beginners. Each ma- tured throughout the year by learning to accept re- sponsibilities. As a whole, we are bound with lasting friendships even though we must part. I would like to thank the staff for their readiness to volunteer many hours towards making the 1970 Helio. Working with you was more than a pleasure and will always be remembered.
