These lyrics were adopted in 1967 by a vote of the student body of Taylor High School. The song was adopted from the University of Wisconsin, whose mascot is also the Titans. 1969 HELIO Table Of Contents opening. Thomas Jefferson HAPPINESS IS... Happiness Is . . . Being The First Graduating Class Of Taylor High School Yesterday is your memory . . . today is your moment . . . tomorrow is your dream. This is the motto of the first graduating class of Taylor High School. Yesterday is your memory of laughing in the halls, cheering at the ballgames, and taking the responsibility of the first class to graduate. Yesterday is your memory of setting traditions and paving the road for classes to come. Yes, Yesterday is your memory. Today is your moment of success, pride, joy, and tears. Today is your moment of graduation and being rewarded a chance for a better education. Today is your moment for graduation tears spilled for friends that are going separate ways. But, today is your moment of pride. Tomorrow is your dream to follow your heart and find your future hap- piness. Tomorrow is your dream to chase around the earth or to reach above the stars. Tomorrow is your future, your life, and your dream, all waiting for a touch of love. Seniors— yesterday is your memory . . . cherish it in your heart. Today is your moment ... be proud and be humble. Tomorrow is your dream . . . reach out and follow it. Seniors march into the gym to the traditional Pomp and Circumstance. Ruth Eckert in her valedictorian speech said, It ' s not who we are, but what we are and how well we live that will determine the reality of America ' s promise. Senator Birch Bayh addresses Taylor ' s first graduating class in commencement exercises. Graduates receive their diplomas and congratulations from Mr. Manahan, principal. Senator Bayh paraphrased Edmond Burke by saying All that is necessary for good to prevail is for enough good men and women to do their something. Ned Hoover, salutatorian, expresses each senior ' s sentiments by thanking the faculty, the school board, and parents for their part in making graduation possible. Taylor ' s first graduates march on to their future dreams. Sheila Acord Graduating Seniors Chosen Patty Lawless Diane Garrard As Miss Titan Court Sue Cannon Happiness Is . . Miss Titan Miss Teresa Campbell, was chosen this year by the entire student body to hold the title of Miss Titan of 1968-1969 . Teresa is an active member of the Taylor High School Choir. She was library assistant, and she completed high school with a major in Home Economics. Also, Teresa was awarded the honor of being Miss Congeniality in the Junior Miss Beauty Pageant in Howard County this year. Teresa also writes the column entitled Titan Tid- bits in the Howard County News. The students at Taylor would like to wish Teresa the best of luck in her future plans after graduation. HAPPINESS IS . . . A HELPING HAND Happiness is ... a test-tube and a room full of fruit flies to Mr. Windlow, head of the Science De- partment at Taylor High School. He was born in Oak Park, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, where he attended Oak Park High School School. He was promoted to Oak Park High School in River Forest, where he participated in many ou t- side activities. Included in these were, membership in the Honor Society, the Sportsmen ' s Club, and the track team. Mr. Windlow earned his B.S. Degree in 1950, at the University of Illinois. He then attended Indiana University at Bloomington and received his Master ' s Degree in 1966. Mr. Windlow has received many awards in his teaching career. Included in these were three In- Service Grants from the National Service Founda- tion, to study at Purdue. In 1964 he was given a National Science Foundation Grant to study at Northwestern University, lUinois. In 1968 he was given another grant from the National Science Foundation to study Marine Biology and Ocean- ography at the University of Rhode Island. He was one of 35 outstanding teachers chosen from the entire United States. Mr. Windlow met his wife-to-be, Joanne Ren- naker, in the seventh grade. The fall after gradua- tion from high school, they became engaged and after graduation from college, they were married. They have three lovely children; Jeffrey Scott, who is now 14, Debbie Lee, 13, and Christopher Mark, 10. They also have another addition to their family, Archibald, a black minature poodle. Mr. Windlow began his teaching career at Washing- ton School in Grant County, Indiana. Then in 1958 Taylor School opened her doors to Mr. Jesse Wind- low for many years of Service. At Taylor, he re- ceived an Outstanding Teacher award, from the PTO. Mr. Windlow has been hi Iy recognized for his outstanding work with Taylor Science Fairs. Every year at the Science Fairs, Taylor walks away with the majority of the ribbons, trophies, and awards. Mr. Windlow has built up the Science Department so that it is the best, and it has received commend- able recognition. For instance, this year in the Taylor Science Fair, Sandra Jones went on to be a first place winner in the Regional Fair. She and her sponsor, Mr. Windlow, were sent to Fort Worth, Texas, adl-expenses paid, to compete in the Interna- tional Science Fair. He has been class sponsor for the class of ' 69 for the past four years. The first class graduating al- ways has to set a good example and pave the way for the classes to come, and Mr. Windlow has made sure that we did. Without the hard work that Mr. Windlow has put into the senior class, we could not be as proud of our school as we are. He is one in a million, full of energy and encouragement. Happiness is . . . Mr. Windlow. You may not be a very big man in physical stature, but we think you ' ve done some pretty big things for our school. As graduation nears and passes, many of the Se- niors you have taught will remember you as a strong, helping hand, that has helped us achieve many goals. Thank you . . . Mr. Windlow. ' JT €: 1 P| «% PPt t IN i 1 Long Awaited Graduation Brings With Happiness is being a senior . . . especially one of the very first. Being the first class to graduate puts a lot of pride and responsibility upon the seniors. It is the first class who sets traditions and ex- amples for the other classes to follow. It is the first class who helps to build a name for its school so that the other classes will be proud to uphold it. The members of the class of ' 69 have done many things along the course of their high school years as first class . It was their responsibility to select the style of class rings and sweaters which are now proudly displayed by underclassmen as well as seniors. The class of ' 69 was also responsible for the designing of the school seal and the selection of graduation robes to be used also as choir robes. Eligible mem- bers of this class were also the first to be initiated into Taylor ' s first National Honor Society and the first to initiate new members. This year alone the seniors have had a Christmas dance, a graduation dance, and were guests at a Ju- nior-Senior Reception given them by the Juniors. The senior girls Eilso participated in Taylor ' s first powder puff football game which will probably be a tradition followed in future years. Honors Day program is a precedent that other classes will also follow. This year after the program eiU the graduat- ing seniors went out to eat. Graduation exercises will also be conducted in ai similar manner in years to come as the first class. The seniors this year were proud to have as their commencement speaker the well-known Senator Birch Bayh. At the close of the year the seniors went on an outing and had a class party. The class also left to the school an American flag in each class room, and a school flag. The first class to graduate is a very importcint class and one that will be remembered. Happiness is be- longing to that class. SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS: Sandy Jones, secretary- treasurer; Bill Rees, president; Karen Berndt, vice-president. Class Of 70 Sponsors First Junior-Senior Reception Happiness is . . . being a junior. All during the basketball season, the Class of ' 70 worked con- cessions at home games, sponsored after-game sock hops, and sold magazine subscriptions. With the money the juniors earned, they sponsored Taylor ' s first Junior-Senior Reception held at the UAW Hall. A smorgasbord dinner was part of the evening ' s program at the dance. A lot of juniors and a lot of hard work made the dance a success. The junior class had the honor of sending three representatives to Boys ' and Girls ' State. They also were privileged to have fourteen of its members initiated into the National Honor So- ciety. Happiness is being a junior . . . when you ' ve been as active as the Class of ' 70. The juniors have had a great year and are looking forward to the promise of a greater senior year. In the senior biological division, Sandy entered her exhibit, The Effect of Insecticides on Life Cycles and Chromo- somes of Drosophila . She won the division over fifty-nine other entries. Sandy then won an all expense paid trip to Forth Worth, Texas with her sponsor, Mr. Windlow. At Forth Worth, she par- ticipated in the Twentieth International Science Fair. First year biology students observe fruit flies under microscopes and later write reports on their observations. Selected Choir Members Participate In All-State Choir Seventeen choir students attended All-State choir making another first for Taylor High School. Stu- dents from high school choirs all over Indiana par- ticipated. The All-State Choir concert was held at the Cadle Tabernacle in Indianapolis. Dr. Charles Hirt of Southern California directed the group. Mary Gamer, a junior, entered the Scholastic Art Award contest at the L. S. Ayres Department Store in Indismapolis. She competed with approxi- mately 20,000 entries, and received an honorable mention, Mary ' s winning entry of water color paesleys took her about six weeks to complete. Our band participated in the Annual High School Band Festival at Coney Island. This festival is a reward for the hard work band members give throughout their school year. Our band received a handsome momento and each member received $2.50 worth of free ride tickets. Bruce briefly reviews his music before the band ' s final re- hearsal for their spring concert. Tim paints his carving made of plaster of paris. Linda makes a drape bowl for her art project. With Taylor ' s new potter ' s wheel, it takes only one period for art students to create beautiful pottery. Drivers education students learn to check the oil in their car. A mouse was given alcohol, by this seventh grade health class and was observed running through a maze later. Parallel parking is the most difficult challenge in drivers education. The students develop their driv- ing skills through driving cars provided for the classes. Changing a tire, studying the parts of a car, and daily assignments are also requirements of the course. Physic£il education provides a variety of sports to be enjoyed by the students. Bowling is a new sport enjoyed by the students once a week during their grading period. Physical Education Students Enjoy Bowling Boys in phys. ed. class run relays In office practice class, Leanne Cooke and Diane Garrard learn correct responses when using a telephone. Barb Fitzgerald learns to use an adding machine in book- keeping. Bill increases his typing speed by using the new Strong-Pacer in the business department. Dictation tapes help Pat Smith to increase her speed in taking shorthand. New Dictation Tapes For Shorthand Happiness is making practice sets in bookkeeping class. These practice sets are of make believe businesses where various transactions are kept and recorded by the students. The entire bookkeeping cycle is experience in making these practice sets, and the preparation of financial papers which analyze various financial aspects of a business. Students also learn how to add, subtract, multi- ply and divide on adding machines in bookkeeping. With multiplication, the students learn to determine discounts plus the number of sales and purchases of discounts. The business law classes viewed a morning ses- sion of court room precedure. During this session the students heeird three divorce cases. Later, Judge Windslow discussed problems relating to divorce cases and capital punishment with the stu- dents. HI Graphic Arts Classes Make Paper In power and transportation class, Jim and Mike learn through working on various parts of a car as well as studying them. As a student assistant, Dick Blazier printed programs for var- ious activities throughout the school year. Dick was also named an Outstanding Industrial Education Student. Two Graphic Arts classes made hand-constructed paper for a class project, under the supervision of Mr. Gemmill. A completely hand-made notebook was then kept by each student. In the notebook was a copy of every project assigned during the year. Graphic Arts is a two semester course in which the students learn the production and quality of paper. Throughout the year the students also learn about the different types of ink, and the techniques of photography and printing. This year ' s Power and Transportation class tore down a 1960 Chevy. After tearing down the car, the chasis and engine were cleaned. Later, the various parts were painted different colors for teaching aid purposes. Fred Barber displays a model home which he built for a class project. Fred was also named an Outstanding Industrial Education Student this year. Eighth grade literature students practice play. Pam, Dave, and Chris learn to make layouts in journalism. A new course offered in our curriculum this year was journalism. This course instructed students in journalism and the publication of a newspaper. In journalism a step-by-step approach to newswriting fundamentals is emphasized. There are three stages of learning in journalism: first, a brief explanation of a topic; second, an understanding and retention through immediate directed practice; and finally, application of the learned topic to actual news- paper production. Also the students learned tech- niques in gathering news, putting stories together and planning editorials. Journalism Is New Course Offered Larry Jones taught students how to play Spanish musical instruments for speech class. Beginning home economics students prepare their first breakfast: hot chocolate and scrambled eggs. Laying out your pattern is a beginning step in making a dress. The Home Economics Department was eligible to elect a student as a correspondent for the CO-ED mjigazine for the first time this year. Janet Jones, a sophomore, was elected to represent Taylor for the 1968-1969 school year. During the year Janet served as a junior editorial advisor to CO-ED. Through questionnaires she told CO-ED about popular ideas and fads among the girls in our school. Three senior girls were given awards this year for outstanding achievements in Home Economics. Anita Snipes was given the McCedl Award for her work in sewing. The Crisco Award was presented to Kathy Chiles for excellent work in all fields of Home Economics. Martha Cannon won the Betty Crocker Award. Every senior girl who had taken Home Economics sometime during her high school years was eligible for this award. The girls were then given a test which determined the winner. Senior home economics students learn mannerisms and how to order from a menu correctly. One of the first things a beginning seamstress learns is how to make darts. Seventh Graders Prepare Their First Meal Audio- Visual Department Purchases New Slide Projector Happiness is our library, because it serves our teachers, as well as the students, in many ways. Mrs. Brumbaugh, assisted by her student helpers prepare subject bibliographies for the teachers. These bibliographies include outside reading lists for special units or projects. Extra copies are available to the students. The library also sends newsletters to the teachers informing them of new materials the library has received. Classroom instruction is given by Mrs. Brumbaugh on the use of library tools. For special classro om projects a cart of books is prepared and delivered for the teachers convenience. The Audio-Visual Department aids teachers by presenting films and preparing classroom displays. Under the direction of Mrs. Brumbaugh and Mr. DeWitt, nine student helpers set up, deliver, and operate equipment, dry mount pictures on poster boards, apply protective coverings on pictures and old newspapers, and make Leroy lettering signs. Throughout the year, the department has pur- chased educational slides, records, a tape recorder, and new overhead projectors. This year a course in government was a new re- quired class for our seniors. In the spring, they visited our State Legislature to observe the actions of our government. They also took a tour of the capital building. In the United States History classes each student was required to give a campaign speech for the presidential csindidate of his choice. After all speeches were given a mo ck election was held in the U.S. History and government classes. In the Audio- Visual Department, the dry mount press is used for mounting pictures on poster board. 1 NIXON ' S Itheone! Fritz says, NIXON ' S THE ONE ! Bruce Curry uses the card catalog in our library vvrhich provides a list of records, slides, tapes, film strips, and books available to all students and teachers. Cheryl Clarner Ranks First In Mathematics Examination Each year top math students within our school compete in the Annual High School Mathematics Examination. This contest is sponsored by the Mathematical Association of America, Society Actuaries, Mu Alpha Theta, and the National Coun- cil of Teachers of Mathematics. Cheryl Clarner, a junior, won first place. In the competition, Cheryl took tests in all fields of mathematics. Her scores along with the scores of the second and third place winners are sent to a national level of competition. At a later date the top one hundred students in the nation are announced. 120 Constructing difficult diagrams in analytic geometry becomes a routine for Larry and Dave. After constructing the diagram correctly the problem must be solved. Trigonometry students were taught how to use a surveyor ' s transit for a class project. Later, they measured the flag pole using what they learned. Third year Spanish students learn a Spanish dance. French Students Sample French Food Students play bingo in Spanish. The language labs aid the students with tapes and records. mM Cheerleaders Have An Active Year X ' f ' « 1 as J J HpBi y ' ' ' wB lip ' Varsity Cheerleaders— Sheila Acord, Connie Johnson, Patty Lawless, Jacki Lynn, Diane Garrard. Happiness is being a cheerleader when you ' re as happy as the cheerleaders at Taylor. What do they do besides yell? They ' re plenty busy! Taylor ' s cheerleaders sold tickets for the athletic club when they raffled off a Dune buggy this year. Not only do they sell tickets, but these peppy girls practice every week, and even through the summer, to cheer our team on. They also attended the Oakhill Clinic where they learned many new yells. It ' s not all work for them, though. Taylor ' s cheerleaders at- tended Smith Waldridge Cheerleading camp where they had a lot of fun right along with learning. At this camp they won five ribbons. One first, two seconds, and two thirds. They were also in a Christmas Parade in which they helped pass out candy. Right here in our own gym the cheerleaders show the experience and learning that they ' ve ac- quired. But most important, our cheerleaders show real school spirit and an enthusiastic love for our team. 126 B-Cheerleaders— Kay Badham, Jeanette Betz, Cindy Brown, Sherri Richmond A Lot of Spirit Spirit-makers in Action Frosh-Cheerleaders— Nancy Tucker, Sherry Wooley, Debbie Carroll, Pam Johnson 8th Grade-Cheerleaders— JoEllen Darling, Jane Moore, Terry Free, Mindy Boles.
