The daily routine on the gunline was not always one barrage of fire after another. Some- times the clouds would roll in from the South China Sea and obscure everything from the spot- ter planes. What have they done to the war? Called it off because of rain? asked the JOOD, But the silence does not last long. As soon as the air is cleared again, aircraft are streaking to their targets. In some areas the underbrush is so dense that the spotter cannot give a good evaluation of the target damage. The jungle growth probably slows the shells down enough so that the Viet Cong can catch them with their bare hands and throw them back at us. All times on the gunline come to an end with a repair period in Subic Bay. The transit offers some relaxation and rest before the inport period. Outbound from Subic Bay.
